Thank you for joining us on this special day as we celebrate the outstanding achievements of the Class of 2022. Whether you are attending this ceremony at the Shaw Auditorium in person, or virtually from elsewhere, please join me in congratulating our graduates on their welldeserved success, particularly in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Let’s also not forget the many faculty, staff, and family members who have worked tirelessly to keep our students’ studies on track during these past two incredibly tough years. I am greatly honored to be celebrating our graduating class in my new capacity as President. Having been part of the HKUST family since 1993, it has been a pleasure to watch timid teenagers blossom into confident, mature and well-spoken young adults through their journey at HKUST — the result of their own perseverance and diligence and the dedication of their teachers and mentors. And I take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to all of our academic staff for their continued efforts, both in and out of the classroom, in educating and inspiring our students, and nurturing them to become forwardthinking future leaders. Members of the Class of 2022, in a few moments, you will leave this campus, the place you have called home for the past few years. As you turn the page to the next chapter of your life, I hope you will continue to cherish and uphold the core values of HKUST, continue to do your best to strive for excellence, uphold integrity, and maintain a global and diverse vision, with respect for all. I also hope you will carry HKUST’s spirit of innovation with you, wherever you go, to touch lives in all corners of society. Possibly there are some among you who are thrilled to leave your days of study behind. Graduating today does not mean your learning stops here. You may soon experience the challenges of the real world, such as pandemic stress, global economic uncertainties, and a competitive job market. You are also the generation that will need to tackle the daunting issues of the 21st century. As you navigate through these uncharted waters, be brave and step outside your comfort zone. Keep an open mind and embrace new experiences in this fast-changing complex world. I trust that your time at HKUST has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, ingenuity, and a “can-do” attitude to transform adversities into achievements, and I am confident that you will each find creative and effective ways to turn challenges into opportunities. If hurdles stand in your way, jump over them and keep going. Your resilience is the engine that will propel you forward. Whether you are starting a career or pursuing further studies, you will likely encounter different opportunities, leading to crossroads of indecision. In such times, remember that you can never go wrong when pursuing your interests. Doing something you love will give you fulfillment and the strength and perseverance you need to reach your goals. Your passion will also inspire and empower those around you to excel in life. And for those of you aspiring to become future leaders, let me share with you the advice – integrity, empathy, humility, and passion are the key elements to making positive impacts on the world and the lives of others. Year 2022 is a new chapter of your life journey, so is HKUST’s 30 years of history. It is a year full of unforgettable moments. Learning in the pandemic-stricken world is no mean feat. But you all succeeded in living up to the expectations of our rigorous programs, stayed vigilant and healthy in different learning activities, and built resilience and confidence in a challenging time. With diligence and determination, you have been through so much and come out smarter and stronger today. The determination of HKUST in nurturing talent in good times and bad has yielded positive outcome for Hong Kong and the region over the past decades. 2022 sees another year of a stellar outcome. The opening of our HKUST Guangzhou campus marks a momentous achievement, setting to drive collaboration within the Greater Bay Area and beyond to develop innovative Address by the Dean of HKUST Business School Professor Kar Yan TAM talent. Despite an uncertain pace of economic recovery, our Business School has not come to a halt. We continue to grow and expand with new programs and initiatives launched to bring new opportunities for our students and researchers. While HKUST manifests its strong commitment at any time, I hope our 1,882 students who graduate today, no matter rain or shine in the future, hold true to your beliefs and live your life to the fullest. We all have good days and bad days, and the key to a bright future is to make the best out of each day. We may not be able to control everything that happens to us, but we can change our attitude and the way we handle setbacks and challenges. I am proud, honored and humbled to deliver this commencement speech to you today. When we first set foot in Hong Kong and arrived on this impressive campus with incredible seaviewing, we could never have imagined that it was the beginning of the global pandemic, which made our path to HKUST uncertain and scary. Besides, with many of us coming from different parts of the world, we have left our safe home and become strangers in this extremely unfamiliar land. How did we fit in this community during such an unprecedented period? This question was soon answered with the enormous support from other MBA students, faculties and professors. Although I cannot remember every detail of how we coped with uncertainties and difficulties, there is one thing I will never forget. That is we have proudly proven to ourselves and each other how persistent, resilient and adaptable we are despite our perceived differences and distances. Life is full of ups and downs. When everything is going well, never become arrogant and discard your original intention. Keep working towards your goal. When you feel that everything is not as it should be, don’t be discouraged, and don’t give up easily. Be more patient and more persistent. The rainbow after the heavy rain will be more colourful. As a song says, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. The Year 2022 is tough, and the future few years are predicted to be continuously challenging. I hope no matter what kind of challenges you will face, the experiences we have gone through together, the knowledge we have obtained, and the friendship we have harvested in HKUST will always back you up and help you smooth out the troughs. After today, we will officially embark on the next chapter of life. We will be exposed to more complicated circumstances. We will be forced to step out of our comfort zone thousands of times. However, please always keep in mind that the end of your comfort zone is the starting point for becoming more robust. We came here as strangers but are now leaving as friends and even families. Don’t forget we always have the same tag that brings us solidarity, that is, HKUST business school alumni. It is my honor and pleasure to deliver the speech on behalf of the Class of 2022 on this special occasion. May I first extend my congratulations to all Class of 2022 graduates. It has never been an easy task to study in HKUST, particularly with the dominance of online learning during the pandemic. But we have all survived the challenges after countless sleepless nights struggling with assignments and examinations. In fact, the process is not at all bitter because we have our beloved friends here. We study together, celebrate ups and overcome the downs together. Life at HKUST would not have been complete without all these remarkable moments. At this important moment when we are celebrating the accomplishment of this demanding yet rewarding journey, please allow me to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to those who have offered us huge support along the way. Thanks to all members of HKUST, including professors and staff, for all the resources devoted to our academic and personal growth. Heartfelt thanks must also be given to our families, who are with us today and watching live in front of the screen, for their unconditional mental support and encouragement. In a world today which is full of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, or in short, VUCA, we continue to face rising challenges. However, as inspired by Charles Dickens, I believe “it was the worst of times, it was the best of times”. Ever since the beginning, my goal was to study in the top university in my home country — the Philippines. Never in my wildest dreams have I imagined that one day I would be graduating from the best business school in Hong Kong. There is a Tagalog proverb that I live by: “Kapag may tiyaga, may nilaga”, which concisely means “perseverance leads to success”. I was told this by my late grandfather when I was a child. I hope he is proud of me for what I have achieved today. For all of us, studying at HKUST marked a new beginning. We came holding blank canvases wanting to be worked on. HKUST represents the easel that sets the environment, which cultivates growth opportunities and endless possibilities. With the help of our mentors, we were equipped with the best brushes, acrylics and oils to paint our stories. Then we met friends from all over the world that added new colours to our palettes. Although sometimes we made mistakes and coloured outside the lines, we have remained resilient and painted over these flaws. Right here right now, we are the painters that use all these tools to control our own destinies. Today, we hang up our aprons and appreciate the work we have done. No two paintings are alike, and each work’s meaning is up for interpretation. Your work may not be exactly what you envisioned, but you would be satisfied knowing it is what made you who you are today. Looking at everyone here, I am confident that we all came out with masterpieces. Here, I see future leaders in their respective fields. As we step into the real world, I cannot wait to see your next work of art. Thank you HKUST for all the memories. Congratulations to the Class of 2022! 畢業生代表的講辭 15 畢業生代表講辭 李炳發 理學士 (經濟及金融學) 及管理學及營運管理學主修 各位尊貴的來賓，各位先生、女士： 大家好！今天很榮幸在此與你們分享。 談到我從小的目標，是長大後在我自己的國家菲 律賓入讀最頂尖大學。但從沒想過有天我會在香 港最好的商學院畢業。 我的座右銘是這句菲律賓諺語：「Kapag may tiyaga, may nilaga」，意思是「堅持就能成功」。這句話 是我已故的祖父在我小時候告訴我的，希望他在 天上會為我今天取得的成就感到自豪。 對我們所有人來說，在香港科技大學學習標誌著 一個新的開始。我們拿著空白的畫布到來，科大 就是畫架，帶來成長機會和無限可能。在導師的 幫助下，我們配備了最好的畫筆和顏料，可以描 繪我們的故事。然後我們遇到了來自世界各地的 朋友，為我們的調色板添加了新的顏色。儘管有 時我們會犯錯，並把顏色塗出界，但我們仍然保 持靈活，並克服了這些問題。此時此刻，我們繼 續扮演畫家的角色，並會利用所有這些工具來繪 寫自己的人生。 今天我們掛起圍裙，一起欣賞自己努力完成的作 品。世界上根本沒有兩幅畫是完全一樣的，每 幅作品的意義都有獨特的詮釋。也許你完成了的 作品與你想像的不盡相同，但我相信你仍會感到 滿意，因為它造就了今天的你。面對今天每位畢 業同學，我深信我們都創造了傑作。在這裡，我 看到了不同領域的未來領裡。我們即將踏入現實 世界了，我非常期待鑑賞大家下一件精彩的藝術 品。 感謝香港科技大學帶給我們的所有回憶，也衷心 祝賀所有2022年的畢業同學！ 16 ADDRESS BY GRADUATE REPRESENTATIVE Address by Graduate Representative WONG Chung Hei Anson Bachelor of Business Administration in Global Business, and in Finance Good afternoon guest of honour, professors, graduating class of 2022, ladies and gentlemen. We did it! Class of 2022! On behalf of all of you, I feel incredibly honoured to stand here today. We are certainly one of the most special classes who have gone through a global pandemic during our university days. I remember very well, still very vividly, our first day on campus, when all classes were held in person and we met new friends and faculty members without masks. Just a year later, the world has transitioned to a new normal where Zoom has become our daily mode of communication. We remember the moments when our home Wi-Fi network dropped us off our Zoom sessions, the moments when people forgot to unmute before speaking, and the moments when people failed to mute but someone was vacuuming in the background. However, I am confident that in five to ten years of time, all these moments will become exciting memories when we meet our friends again. We will definitely remember the countless lunches and dinners we had at LG7, the sleepless yet fruitful nights in LC, and the huge smiles we have on our faces when we officially graduate today! University, to me is a place for exploration with a safety net. Every step out of my comfort zone has brought new experiences and learning opportunities to me. I am sure this is also true in a certain way for everyone in this hall. These are the moments we cherish — when we made mistakes, when we failed, when we failed again and finally succeeded. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our parents, friends, professors, advisors, mentors and mentees for all the unconditional support and love in times of need. Finally, we need to part ways. I sincerely wish everyone the very best in your future endeavours. Unlike this speech, there is no script in our lives. Thank you! 畢業生代表的講辭 17 畢業生代表講辭 黃頌莃 工商管理學士 (環球商業管理及金融學) 各位來賓、師長、畢業同學、先生及女士，午 安。 作為2022年的畢業生，能夠在這個畢業台上向各 位致辭，我實在感到無比光榮。本屆畢業生絕對 是非一般的，因為我們都在新冠疫情及新常態中 共同渡過了大學生涯中的高低起伏。猶記得第一 天來到科大校園，同學們仍能到課室上課，那時 候我們臉上的微笑還未被口罩遮蓋。然而在短短 一年後，世界已迅速進入了新常態。Zoom變成了 溝通橋樑，遙距課堂亦上演了一幕幕讓我們會心 微笑、永誌難忘的場景。例如同學忘記靜音，家 裡的吸塵機聲音為課堂添上了點綴。 儘管遙距課堂佔據了我們大學生涯中不少時間， 但我相信十年以後，這些啼笑皆非的場景卻不會 再是我們最深刻的回憶。我們記起的，反而是那 些與我們一同為未來而奮鬥的同伴，那些在LG7 共進午餐的情景，那些在圖書館裡秉燭夜讀的畫 面，以及那些在畢業照上的可愛笑臉！ 大學是一個讓我們盡情探索未來的溫室。每個嘗 試、每次堅持，都為我們開啟了無數通往未知的 大門，讓我們發掘無窮無盡的可能性。我們珍惜 犯過的每個錯誤、受過的每個教訓，以及每個歷 盡千辛萬苦才得到的成功。 畢業之際，我們快將各奔東西，向著自己的目標 進發。今天，我謹代表全體畢業生，衷心感謝各 位教授、家長及朋友一直以來的支持，伴我們走 過了年輕而美好的大學時代。 最後，願各位同學前程似錦，為自己的人生無悔 地寫下扣人心弦的篇章！謝謝！ 18 ADDRESS BY GRADUATE REPRESENTATIVE Address by Graduate Representative LAU Cheuk Tung Martin Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing, and in Management Distinguished guests, professors, ladies and gentlemen, With profound humility, I am privileged to stand in front of you today. Fellow graduates, we did it! Is it not most fitting that we all gather here today as the culmination of our collegiate adventures with the company of the most important people in our lives? As we are waving joyful goodbye to this place, we all have our own memories: perhaps at the seafront with beer and spirits under stars, or perhaps in front of a laptop with tears because of exams and assignments. No matter whether they are memories of jubilation or vexation, we have all become a better version of ourselves. We pursued excellence with assiduousness. We learned from and interacted within a diverse and inclusive culture. We have been equipped and polished, inspired and emboldened. Put starkly, this place might not have been the first choice for some of us, but it is now for a fact a home that all of us once shared – and will, I hope, continue to share as today marks the end of a journey, but also the beginning of another. It is likely that we are going to have dozens of jobs in our lives, but there will be a constant identity in our CV. We may no longer call ourselves undergraduates, but when we gaze at the education column, we can always be proud of being an HKUST alumnus. This alumni community is not only one that will welcome us with open arms, but one that is a force for good as well as a force to be reckoned with – and that is entirely up to us – only if we remain steadfast in holding dear to our fundamental values, if we stay unflinchingly committed to doing what is right, and if we do not yield to adversity. However precipitous the road ahead may be, perseverance and tenacity will be the key to weathering the storm. To that end, I would like to wish everybody good health and every success in your future endeavours. My fellow graduates, congratulations on achieving this huge milestone in life. The world has changed a lot during the past few years. Witnessing the importance of data analytics and digital transformation, we are some of the luckiest students who have chosen to become technically proficient. Together we learnt from campus to Zoom. Together we analysed data for coursework and case competitions. Together we stepped out of our comfort zone by immersing ourselves in the world of analytics, that was not even possible a few decades ago. Graduating with both majors in information systems and operations management, I am so glad to have many opportunities to apply what I have learnt in my daily work these days. Steve Jobs once said, “It’s not a faith in technology. It’s faith in people.” Technology helped us a lot in our undergraduate journey and career, but it is just a tool, and we are the one to create values with it. Meanwhile, the knowledge we acquired from semesters has become our foundations for building our future, regardless of which fields and what roles we are in. After today, we will have more opportunities to contribute to the society and pursuit different paths and dreams. Yet, I am sure that everything we have learnt will eventually create impact in our lives. Not just knowledge, but the courage to pursue ambitions, to overcome failures, and to truly be ourselves.
