Thank you for joining us on this special day as we celebrate the outstanding achievements of the Class of 2022. Whether you are attending this ceremony at the Shaw Auditorium in person, or virtually from elsewhere, please join me in congratulating our graduates on their welldeserved success, particularly in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Let’s also not forget the many faculty, staff, and family members who have worked tirelessly to keep our students’ studies on track during these past two incredibly tough years. I am greatly honored to be celebrating our graduating class in my new capacity as President. Having been part of the HKUST family since 1993, it has been a pleasure to watch timid teenagers blossom into confident, mature and well-spoken young adults through their journey at HKUST — the result of their own perseverance and diligence and the dedication of their teachers and mentors. And I take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to all of our academic staff for their continued efforts, both in and out of the classroom, in educating and inspiring our students, and nurturing them to become forwardthinking future leaders. Members of the Class of 2022, in a few moments, you will leave this campus, the place you have called home for the past few years. As you turn the page to the next chapter of your life, I hope you will continue to cherish and uphold the core values of HKUST, continue to do your best to strive for excellence, uphold integrity, and maintain a global and diverse vision, with respect for all. I also hope you will carry HKUST’s spirit of innovation with you, wherever you go, to touch lives in all corners of society. Possibly there are some among you who are thrilled to leave your days of study behind. Graduating today does not mean your learning stops here. You may soon experience the challenges of the real world, such as pandemic stress, global economic uncertainties, and a competitive job market. You are also the generation that will need to tackle the daunting issues of the 21st century. As you navigate through these uncharted waters, be brave and step outside your comfort zone. Keep an open mind and embrace new experiences in this fast-changing complex world. I trust that your time at HKUST has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, ingenuity, and a “can-do” attitude to transform adversities into achievements, and I am confident that you will each find creative and effective ways to turn challenges into opportunities. If hurdles stand in your way, jump over them and keep going. Your resilience is the engine that will propel you forward. In such times, remember that you can never go wrong when pursuing your interests. Doing something you love will give you fulfillment and the strength and perseverance you need to reach your goals. And for those of you aspiring to become future leaders, let me share with you the advice – integrity, empathy, humility, and passion are the key elements to making positive impacts on the world and the lives of others. In closing, wherever life takes you beyond this point, remember we are always One-HKUST! Rest assured that the doors of your alma mater will remain open to you. As you reflect on your time at SHSS – whether it was for one year, four years, or more – I expect that you will marvel at how much you grew as an individual. All of you worked hard and persisted through seemingly endless hours of Zoom classes. Being online for so much of the time made it more challenging for us to interact as a community, unfortunately. But I hope that the time you spent together with your classmates and professors, albeit too little, has proved to be meaningful and memorable. You might have had a meal with one another when the degree program began or concluded. You might have chatted with your classmates on the corridor while waiting to enter the lecture hall. Or you might have shared a moment of relief and exhaustion after submitting a difficult assignment. Hold on to those human experiences, interactions, and emotions. A basic principle in economics is that scarce items are more valuable – and our in-person experiences have become that much more precious after three years of pandemic-related disruptions. Going forward, I expect that the longer-term impact of your time at SHSS will continue to echo throughout your careers. You may reach out to a former classmate for help, or you may find yourself making a presentation at work and recall the time when you did something similar in the classroom. Ultimately, what you gained from your time with us will continue to evolve as you acquire new experiences and meet new people. As you move on, remember that SHSS will always be part of your academic DNA. Class of 2022, congratulations! We made it! Before you leave this ceremony, I want you to think about the most important thing you’ve learnt at UST. Difficult right? No worries, there’s no one correct answer to this question. For me, the answer is bravery. As a shy introvert, I feel so lucky to have been a part of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, an extremely warm and supportive community, where I felt safe to explore the world around me. I still remember how much courage I needed to gather as a fresh first-year student before asking Professor Eva Chen if I could be her Research Assistant. I’d thought in great detail about how I would react when she turned me down, and imagined all manners of worst-case scenarios. So, imagine my surprise when she agreed! Ever since, this positive feedback has been instrumental in motivating me to bravely reach out to knock on professors’ doors, to discuss academics, career plans, and pretty much anything on my mind. They inspired me to explore different fields in social science and beyond. In HKUST, it only takes a bit of bravery - whether it is to talk to professors, or engage in activities and make new friends. There are so many activities for us to participate: I enjoyed performing with the Chinese Orchestra, sailing in UST’s breath-taking sunset, and exploring this vibrant city, ... and more importantly, making friends and embracing diversity. All it took was just a little bit of bravery to fill in the sign-up form. With the same bravery, we have connected with our society and community. We have spoken to foreign domestic helpers to know about their happiest moments and their day-to-day struggles. We have met rehabilitated offenders and helped them reintegrate into society. And with the same bravery, we can enable different voices to understand what makes us different as people and what binds us together – what makes us human! Before I conclude, I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to The University of Science and Technology, to my teachers and friends here, and to the beautiful city of Hong Kong. As a first-generation university student, I also want to thank my parents and family back in Hangzhou for providing me with the best, and for supporting me unconditionally! And I want to thank each and every one of you. Let me say it again, thank you all! 畢業生代表的講辭 11 畢業生代表講辭 厉景晨 理學士（定量社會數據分析及計算機科學） 尊敬的各位來賓，家长，親愛的教授和同學們 : 大家好! 非常榮幸能站在這裡和大家分享在科大的點點滴 滴。2022屆的同學們，畢業快樂！ 在同學們上台前，我想讓你們回憶一下，在科 大，什麼是你學到最重要的東西。很難對吧？ 別擔心，這個問題沒有一個標準答案。而對我而 言，答案是勇氣。 能成為人文社科學院的一份子，我感到非常幸 運。作為一個內向的人，這個溫暖團結的大家庭 給了我充足的安全感，讓我去大膽探索。我仍然 記得剛剛進入科大的時候，稚嫩的我積攢了極 大的勇氣，去詢問陳伊慈教授可否成為她的科研 助理。我早已做好了被拒絕的準備，但她竟然欣 然答應了我的請求！你一定可以體會到我在那一 刻的驚喜。這樣的正向反饋激勵著我勇敢地敲開 更多教授辦公室的大門，和他們聊聊學術、討論 職業規劃，還有生活中發生的所有點滴。在他們 的鼓勵下，我得以大膽地探索社會科學的不同領 域，甚至社會科學之外的其他領域。 在科大，只需要拿出一點點勇氣，就能參與到不 同活動中去，結交新朋友。科大提供了豐富多采 的活動讓大家參與：我享受在中樂團的每一場演 出，陶醉泛舟於科大令人屏息的落日，熱愛探索 這座充滿活力的城市……最重要的是，在此過程 中我結交了來自五湖四海的新朋友，並為這種多 元性深深打動！所有這一切，都萌發於填寫報名 表時那邁出第一步的勇氣。 因為這種勇氣，我們勇敢地和社會相連結。我們 了解外籍家庭傭工的生存狀況、喜怒哀樂；我們 聆聽更生人士的故事，幫助他們重新融入社會。 因為這種勇氣，我們可以面對不同的聲音，兼容 並蓄，和而不同。 最後，我想對香港科大，我的老師和同學們，以 及香港這座美麗的城市表達衷心的感謝。另外， 作為家中第一代大學生，我還想對遠在杭州的父 母和家人道一聲感謝，感謝你們無條件的付出、 支持和愛！感謝在科大的旅途中每一位幫助過我 的人！ 謝謝！ ORDER OF PROCEEDINGS SESSION 10 2:30pm, December 2, 2022 GRADUATION CEREMONY SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE (MPhil, MSc, MA, BSc) 1.
