Thank you for joining us on this special day as we celebrate the outstanding achievements of the Class of 2022. Whether you are attending this ceremony at the Shaw Auditorium in person, or virtually from elsewhere, please join me in congratulating our graduates on their welldeserved success, particularly in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Let’s also not forget the many faculty, staff, and family members who have worked tirelessly to keep our students’ studies on track during these past two incredibly tough years. I am greatly honored to be celebrating our graduating class in my new capacity as President. Having been part of the HKUST family since 1993, it has been a pleasure to watch timid teenagers blossom into confident, mature and well-spoken young adults through their journey at HKUST — the result of their own perseverance and diligence and the dedication of their teachers and mentors. And I take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to all of our academic staff for their continued efforts, both in and out of the classroom, in educating and inspiring our students, and nurturing them to become forwardthinking future leaders. Members of the Class of 2022, in a few moments, you will leave this campus, the place you have called home for the past few years. As you turn the page to the next chapter of your life, I hope you will continue to cherish and uphold the core values of HKUST, continue to do your best to strive for excellence, uphold integrity, and maintain a global and diverse vision, with respect for all. I also hope you will carry HKUST’s spirit of innovation with you, wherever you go, to touch lives in all corners of society. Possibly there are some among you who are thrilled to leave your days of study behind. Graduating today does not mean your learning stops here. You may soon experience the challenges of the real world, such as pandemic stress, global economic uncertainties, and a competitive job market. You are also the generation that will need to tackle the daunting issues of the 21st century. As you navigate through these uncharted waters, be brave and step outside your comfort zone. Keep an open mind and embrace new experiences in this fast-changing complex world. I trust that your time at HKUST has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, ingenuity, and a “can-do” attitude to transform adversities into achievements, and I am confident that you will each find creative and effective ways to turn challenges into opportunities. If hurdles stand in your way, jump over them and keep going. Your resilience is the engine that will propel you forward. Whether you are starting a career or pursuing further studies, you will likely encounter different opportunities, leading to crossroads of indecision. In such times, remember that you can never go wrong when pursuing your interests. Doing something you love will give you fulfillment and the strength and perseverance you need to reach your goals. Your passion will also inspire and empower those around you to excel in life. And for those of you aspiring to become future leaders, let me share with you the advice – integrity, empathy, humility, and passion are the key elements to making positive impacts on the world and the lives of others. Describing his research process as a “slow-boat from China”, the professor’s remarkable single-mindedness proved hugely useful in unlocking the mysteries surrounding human blood diseases such as sickle cell anemia and thalassemia. Born in Hong Kong in 1936, the professor was the youngest of 14 children in the family of Bank of East Asia co-founder, KAN Tong-Po. While his older siblings became lawyers or financiers, his father suggested he pursue a career in medicine. The future scientist accepted the advice and earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Hong Kong in 1958. Having spent two years as a resident intern at Queen Mary Hospital, Prof. Kan’s inexhaustible scientific curiosity led him down a different path to conventional medicine. After deciding to study hematology in the US, he spent the early 1960s undergoing training at various prestigious medical institutions and universities including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A major turning point in Prof. Kan’s research career came when revered hematology authority Louis LOWENSTEIN recruited him for his Canadian research team in 1963. In a development he ascribes to fate, the professor was asked to consult on the premature death of a newborn baby, who was afflicted with severe anemia, a common condition caused by thalassemia. Intrigued by a field that was then still largely unknown, Prof. Kan decided to investigate further. The professor returned to the US and embarked on his new research quest at Boston Children’s Hospital. Using the emerging biotechnology available at the time, he studied the protein synthesis in various thalassemic conditions and eventually helped to define the different thalassemia syndromes. Driven by his quest for knowledge and requiring a normal model for an experiment, the professor even harvested a sample of his newborn daughter’s blood for use in one study. After much research and analysis, Prof. Kan and his team established that newborns afflicted with thalassemia lacked the alpha globin gene. This was the landmark first time DNA testing had been used to diagnose a human condition. In the 1970s, Prof. Kan’s discovery of a human genetic variation called DNA polymorphism led to the development of DNA-based pre-natal diagnosis of sickle cell disease and various other genetic disorders. As the only cure for thalassemia and sickle cell disease involves bone marrow and/or cord blood transfusions, most sufferers can only be 理學榮譽博士 9 treated for symptoms and complications. Prof. Kan’s revolutionary advances made it possible to alert at-risk parents before they decided to have children. Pre-birth detection of such diseases ultimately enabled special monitoring and treatments that minimized the likely impact and stresses facing such couples. Prof. Kan’s tremendous contribution to science have been recognized with numerous prestigious accolades. In addition to the Shaw Foundation Prize in Life Science and Medicine, they include a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America. He also became the first Chinese Fellow of the UK’s Royal Society in 1981. A member of the US National Academy of Sciences, the professor also sat on the US President’s Committee on the National Medal of Science. Over the years, Prof. Kan has worked with many leading universities, medical and clinical institutes in Canada and the US. In addition to being appointed assistant professor at Harvard University in 1971, he also served as Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute from 1976 until his retirement from the institute in 2003. Between 1983 and 2021, the professor headed up the Genetics and Molecular Hematology lab at the University of California San Francisco, where he currently occupies its Louis K. Diamond Chair in Hematology and is a Professor Emeritus. Prof. Kan’s relationship with HKUST began when he gave a Distinguished Lecture in Science here in 1992. Chairman of the Croucher Foundation of Hong Kong from 1997 to 2011, the professor was instrumental in funding research into the natural sciences, technology and medicine at HKUST and several other local universities. Council Chairman, on behalf of the Council of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, I have the high honor of presenting to you, Prof. Kan Yuet-Wai, Louis K. Diamond Chair in Hematology and Professor Emeritus at the University of California San Francisco, for the award of Doctor of Science honoris causa. 10 DOCTOR OF SCIENCE HONORIS CAUSA 簡悅威教授貴為全球首屈一指的人類遺傳學專 家，率先採用脫氧核醣核酸(基因)測試診斷複雜 的遺傳疾病，為世界日後廣泛應用基因測試進行 遺傳學分析奠下基礎。他以一艘「來自中國的慢 船」比喻自己的研究歷程，過程雖然千辛萬苦， 但憑著其專心致志、心無旁騖的工作態度，最終 揭開鐮狀紅血球貧血症及地中海貧血症等人類血 液疾病的神秘面紗，順利到達成功的彼岸。 簡教授1936年生於香港，父親乃東亞銀行聯合創 辦人簡東蒲先生，在14兄弟姊妹中排行最幼。其 兄姊均是法律及金融業界專才，他則遵從父親的 建議習醫，並於1958年取得香港大學內外全科醫 學士學位。 對科學充滿熱誠及好奇心的簡教授，在瑪麗醫院 完成兩年實習後，毅然決定放棄在傳統醫學界 發展，轉而踏上科研旅途，另闢蹊徑。六十年代 初，他選擇到美國攻讀血液學，並於麻省理工學 院等多所著名醫學機構及大學受訓。 1963年，簡教授獲加拿大血液學權威路易斯‧ 洛文斯坦羅致為研究團隊成員，成了其科研事業 的轉捩點——他被指派研究一名新生嬰兒的夭折 原因，而這項任務被他視為一次命中注定的工作 安排。簡教授發現該研究對象出現地中海貧血症 常見的嚴重貧血病徵，唯醫學界當時對此所知甚 理學榮譽博士 簡悅威教授 讚辭 少，他遂決意深入調查，解開當中謎團。 回到美國後，簡教授在波士頓兒童醫院開展全新 研究，應用當時新興的生物科技，分析各類地中 海貧血症的蛋白質合成過程，從而找出地中海貧 血症的各種症狀，影響巨大。為了求知求真，他 甚至採集自己初生女兒的血液樣本，為一項實驗 提供所需的正常血液樣本作研究之用。 經過大量研究和分析，簡教授的團隊終於確定缺少 α-珠蛋白鏈基因是導致新生嬰兒患上地中海貧血 症的元兇，創下利用基因測試診斷人體症狀的先 河。七十年代，他更發現一種稱為基因多態性的 人類基因變異，此項重大發現促使醫學界研發產 前基因檢測技術，為胎兒診斷鐮狀紅血球貧血症 及其他遺傳性疾病。 要根治地中海貧血症及鐮狀紅血球貧血症，唯一 方法是進行骨髓移植或臍帶血輸血手術，至於 其他治療方法，僅可為大部分患者紓緩徵狀及防 止併發症出現。簡教授的劃時代研究成果，有助 識別高危人士，令他們在決定生兒育女前知悉風 險。在懷胎期及早偵測相關疾病，更可透過特別 監察和治療，對症下藥，令準父母面對的壓力和 影響減至最低。 理學榮譽博士 11 簡教授對科學界貢獻良多，成就卓越，歷年獲獎 無數。除了「邵逸夫生命科學與醫學獎」及美國 的中國生物學家協會「終身成就獎」外，他更於 1981年成為首位入選英國皇家學會院士的華人。 他亦曾以美國國家科學院院士身份，出任美國國 家科學獎章委員會成員，向總統推薦得獎人選。 多年來，簡教授先後於美、加兩地多所頂級學 府、醫學和臨床機構供職。他早於1971年已獲哈 佛大學延聘為助理教授，之後在1976年擔任霍 華‧德休斯醫學研究實驗室研究員，直至2003年 退休。他亦曾於1983至2021年出掌加州大學三藩 市分校遺傳學及分子血液學實驗室，現時仍為該 校路易斯‧戴蒙德血液學講座教授及榮休教授。 簡教授與科大的淵緣，始於1992年擔任大學「傑 出科學學人講座」主講嘉賓。此外，他曾於1997 至2011年擔任裘槎基金會信託委員會主席，在審 批科大及其他本地大學的自然科學、科技及醫學 研究撥款方面，影響力舉足輕重。 校董會主席，我謹代表香港科技大學校董會恭請 閣下頒授理學榮譽博士學位予加州大學三藩市分 校路易斯‧戴蒙德血液學講座教授及榮休教授簡 悅威教授。 12 Doctor of Engineering honoris causa Professor Sir Jim MCDONALD Citation DOCTOR OF ENGINEERING HONORIS CAUSA Born into a family of craftsmen in Glasgow’s Gowan shipyard area, Prof. Sir Jim MCDONALD’s passion for engineering was evident from a very young age. A curious 12-year-old, he would dismantle radios and his family’s only TV set to discover how they worked. Little did they know that he would grow up to become a widely respected and influential international figure in both engineering and tertiary education. Resigned to having to leave school because of his family’s financial situation, Sir Jim was encouraged to stay on and seize every possible opportunity for further study by his family and teachers. His hard work and determination paid off when he began transforming his life as a three-time graduate – and eventually Principal of – Glasgow’s University of Strathclyde. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering in 1978, Sir Jim trained as a professional engineer in both the public and private sectors, acquiring extensive experience in power transmission and distribution. Recognizing his talent, Sir Jim’s then employer, the South of Scotland Electricity Board, sponsored his studies for a Master of Electrical Power Engineering and he subsequently went on to earn a PhD in Power System Economics. Relishing the opportunity to share his on-thejob expertise and insights with students, Sir Jim returned to Strathclyde as a lecturer in 1984. He was eventually appointed as Rolls-Royce Chair in Electrical Power Systems in 1993, and became the university’s Principal and Vice Chancellor in 2009. As academic-industry collaboration was still quite rare in the 1990s, Sir Jim was uniquely placed to develop and lead Strathclyde’s research and commercialization portfolio by demonstrating how curiosity-based and userfocused research could provide a catalyst for positive change. One collaboration he remains especially proud of is Rolls-Royce’s establishment of its University Technology Centre at Strathclyde in 1997. Sir Jim was also pivotal in commercializing university research across multiple fields such as energy, renewable energy and AI. His tremendous contributions in harnessing academic knowledge to solve real world problems was subsequently recognized when Strathclyde’s pioneering work in Electrical Power Engineering was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 1996. The University later won two further Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Energy Innovation and Advanced Manufacturing in 2019 and 2021 respectively. With global warming now an existential threat, Sir Jim is an enthusiastic advocate of “engineering for the future”. To this end, he provides advice to both the UK and Scottish governments on energy strategies and advances such as systems-driven decarbonization methodologies. The ultimate aim is ensuring the UK can meet its commitment to eliminating CO2 emissions within the next 25 years. 13 Sir Jim’s proven track record in synergizing academia and industry made him an ideal collaborator for HKUST. In 2017, the University and Strathclyde signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which launched a Dual Master’s Degree Programme called “Focusing on Future Energy and Power System Smart Operation and Management” for both existing and aspiring engineers. In early 2022, a new Collaborative Research Agreement was signed and the MoU extended to cover joint projects in frontier fields such as decarbonization and renewable energy engineering. Sir Jim gives back to his specialist field by serving on multiple professional bodies. In 2019, he became the first Scot to be elected President of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He also sits on the UK Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology and the National Physical Laboratory, and co-chairs the Scottish Government’s Energy Advisory Board with the First Minister of Scotland. A non-executive director of two large energy and engineering companies, Scottish Power and the Weir Group, Sir Jim is also a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh; the Institution of Engineering and Technology; the Institute of Physics; the Energy Institute; and an International Member of the US National Academy of Engineering. Here in Asia, he is a Foreign Fellow of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering, and also a UK member of an educational advisory board affiliated with the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. An accomplished engineer and visionary educational leader, Sir Jim’s unstinting commitment to building a better and sustainable future have earned him numerous distinguished recognitions and accolades. In 2012, he was awarded a Knighthood from the late Queen Elizabeth II for his services to education, engineering, and economy. In 2022, he was presented with a lifetime achievement award by the China-Britain Business Council. His groundbreaking research has paved the way for the development of therapeutic drugs for many human diseases including cancer. The biochemist’s wide and deep impact on life biology reflects his boldness, creativity, and commitment to pushing scientific boundaries and treating life-threatening illnesses. Dr. Wang was born in Wuhan in 1963 and grew up in a family with scholarly tradition. Developing a strong interest in biology and math from a young age, he obtained a BSc Degree in Biology from the Beijing Normal University in the early 1980s before earning a prestigious scholarship to study modern biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center. After completing his PhD Degree there in Biochemistry in 1991, he started postdoctoral research into cholesterol metabolisms at the Nobel prize-winning Brown and Goldstein laboratory. While there, the doctor was able to identify an enzyme that has a pivotal role in apoptosis, a form of programmed cell death. Then a largely unexplored subject, apoptosis is a cell death process via which human bodies expel unwanted cells. Constantly challenging himself to make “every new paper better than the last”, Dr. Wang leveraged this early discovery to start digging deeper into the apoptotic process. While Assistant Professor at Atlanta’s Emory University in 1995, the doctor and his colleagues made another of the breakthroughs which underpin his formidable reputation: The development of an “in vitro assay”, a novel cell-free system capable of pinpointing the elements that initiate apoptotic cell death. Leveraging the newly developed system, Dr. Wang was able to piece together the complex molecular puzzle of how cells commit suicide. Having been brought back to UT’s Department of Biochemistry as a faculty member, the doctor conducted various additional studies. He and his fellow researchers eventually identified two important biochemical steps triggered by cytochrome c and APAF1, the proteins that initiate the programmed cell death process. They also discovered that the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria regulated by oncogenic protein Bcl-2 had revealed a brand new role of mitochondria as a signalling organelle that can dictate cell death, in addition to their classical functions as energy generator and metabolic center. The advances have been instrumental in developing medicines capable of overcoming cancer cells’ ability to resist our bodies’ efforts to eliminate them. Dr. Wang’s research discoveries have unraveled the mysteries surrounding apoptosis, but he refused to rest on his laurels. He broadened his research scope to address necroptosis, another form of programmed cell death different than 理學榮譽博士 17 apoptosis and identified key components in cells that carry out necroptosis. In expanding science’s understanding of a form of cell death that triggers innate immune responses, the doctor significantly enhanced medical professionals’ ability to combat neurodegenerative diseases. Having held UT’s George MacGre g o r Distinguished Chair Professor and a Howard Hughes Investigator from 2001 to 2010, the doctor returned to China full time in 2010 as Director and Investigator of Beijing’s National Institute of Biological Sciences, a post he still occupies. He also joined forces with leading Mainland universities in mounting joint PhD programs that have now motivated some 730 new scientists to follow in his footsteps. As a co-founder of biotech company, BeiGene, he remains actively involved in researching and developing new cancer drugs for major pharmaceutical firms. The lengthy list of prestigious academic accolades Dr. Wang has received includes the 2004 US National Academy of Science Award in Molecular Biology and the 2006 Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine. He also serves on and advises numerous internationally influential bodies, namely the US National Academy of Sciences, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, European Molecular Biology Organization, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He currently also serves as University Chair Professor at Tsinghua University and director of Tsinghua Institute of Multidisciplinary Biomedical Research. The doctor’s association with HKUST dates back to 2012, when he became a scientific advisor for the University’s School of Science, a position he continues to hold today. In addition to exchanging scientific insights with both HKUST academics and students, he also promotes the School’s strategic development and advises on nominees for its Head and Dean positions. A firm believer in “no pain, no gain”, Ms. Yip continues to leverage the diligence and perseverance her training and career have given her to nurture and inspire new generations of musical talents. Ms. Yip’s family moved to Hong Kong from Guangzhou before her first birthday. Having begun learning piano aged just four, she took up the violin at 10. She was then taught conducting by her eminent composer and music educator father, Dr. YIP Wai-Hong, the founder of Hong Kong’s first children’s choir. Ms. Yip set her heart on a musical career at 15 when she made her public debut conducting a children’s choir performance. She then began her professional training in 1978 after winning the Hong Kong Jockey Club scholarship to study violin and conducting at London’s prestigious Royal College of Music. She later went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Violin Performance and Orchestral Conducting from the Indiana University at Bloomington, USA in 1985, also winning the First Prize as well as “Lyre d’Or” in the 35th Concours International de Jeunes Chefs d’Orchestre de Besançon, France. Upon graduation, Ms. Yip decided to pursue a conducting career. A year later, she was appointed the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra’s Resident Conductor. Grounded and industrious, Ms. Yip continued to challenge herself and was fortunate to be able to learn from world-famous conductors such as Seiji OZAWA and Leonard BERNSTEIN when participating in the conducting programme of the Tanglewood Music Center in 1986 and 1992. Her hard work eventually paid off when she was offered the position of Principal Conductor and later Music Director of Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra in 1996. In 2002, Ms. Yip realized the dream of leading her own orchestra as Music Director at the fledgling Hong Kong Sinfonietta, which had only turned professional three years earlier. She promptly set about supplementing the ensemble with experienced full-time professionals and enchanting local audiences with a growing classical repertoire of impressive quality and variety. Great music directors must not only be gifted artists, but also highly capable managers and marketers. While mastering the latter skills initially proved challenging, Ms. Yip’s “can-do” attitude ensured the Sinfonietta has grown into a headline attraction which now gives over 100 local performances annually. Its pioneering 人文學榮譽博士 21 Artist Associate scheme also provides a valuable collaborative platform for emerging composers, performers, dancers, choreographers, actors and painters. Internationally, the Sinfonietta’s performances have been hailed in over 40 cities and at globally renowned festivals across Asia and around the world. In promoting classical music, Ms. Yip focuses on the twin goals of expanding the artform’s popular appeal and creating more platforms for young musicians to showcase their talent. She has relentlessly put her creative and innovative ideas into cross-over performances with artists from ballet, jazz and visual arts as well as funfilled educational programmes for students and children of all ages. Ms. Yip has built her international reputation through her appearances at numerous venues and festivals, and collaborations with world-renowned artists and performing arts groups. Leading orchestras she has worked with include the China National Symphony, China Philharmonic, Shanghai Symphony, Seoul Philharmonic, Osaka Philharmonic, New Japan Philharmonic, Melbourne Symphony, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse and Warsaw Philharmonic. Over the years Ms. Yip has received numerous accolades for her tremendous contribution to her chosen field. In addition to Hong Kong’s coveted Bronze Bauhinia Star, her honors include France’s “Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite” and “Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres”. Other significant recognitions include Fellowship of the Royal College of Music and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and the Hong Kong Federation of Women’s “Women of Excellence in the Six Arts Award”. In 2020, Ms. Yip stepped down from her position as Music Director after serving the Sinfonietta for 18 years. Gratifyingly, her passion for classical music remains undimmed and she continues to serve as Hong Kong Sinfonietta’s Music Director Emeritus. When COVID-19 disrupted live performances, she led its musicians in soothing people’s worries with online performances and concert films. Council Chairman, on behalf of the Council of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, I have the high honor of presenting to you, Ms. Yip Wing-Sie, Music Director Emeritus of Hong Kong Sinfonietta, for the award of Doctor of Humanities honoris causa. 22 DOCTOR OF HUMANITIES HONORIS CAUSA 成長於音樂世家的葉詠詩女士克紹箕裘，靈巧地 舞動手中的指揮棒，為廣大聽眾呈獻她深愛的古 典音樂，餘音繚繞，成就備受肯定。她堅信「一 分耕耘、一分收穫」，長年累月的專業訓練及表 演練就勤奮堅忍的個性，她亦以此態度積極培育 及啟廸後進，力助他們發揮音樂才華。 葉女士未滿周歲即隨家人從廣州南遷香港，四歲 開始學習鋼琴，10歲起兼習小提琴，及至年紀 稍長，便由父親葉惠康博士傳授指揮技巧。葉博 士畢生致力於音樂教育，不僅是赫赫有名的作曲 家，更創辦香港首個兒童合唱團，開創先河。 葉女士15歲便初登指揮台，為兒童合唱團一次公 開表演擔任指揮，自此立志投身音樂事業。1978 年，她考獲香港賽馬會獎學金，負笈倫敦皇家 音樂學院研習小提琴及指揮，正式接受專業訓 練；1985年轉往美國印弟安納大學布盧明頓分 校，攻讀小提琴及管弦樂指揮碩士學位，同年贏 得法國貝桑松第35屆國際青年指揮大賽冠軍及金 豎琴獎。 畢業後，葉女士立定決心專注發展指揮事業，一 年後獲香港管弦樂團委任為駐團指揮。她用功務 實，持續自我增值，先後於1986及1992年前赴鄧 肯活音樂中心研習指揮，有幸得小澤征爾、伯恩 斯坦等名家的指導，受益匪淺。葉女士的辛勤努 力得到回報，1996年獲廣州交響樂團賞識聘為首 席指揮，其後更出任該樂團音樂總監一職。 人文學榮譽博士 葉詠詩女士 BBS, JP 讚辭 葉女士一直夢想在香港領導屬於自己的樂團，最 終在2002年得償夙願，出任當時成為專業藝團僅 僅三年的香港小交響樂團音樂總監。為促進樂團 發展，她迅即延聘資深全職樂師加盟，同時力求 演奏的古典曲目質量兼備，為本地樂迷帶來連場 高質素的音樂表演。 優秀的音樂總監不僅要具備藝術才華，更須掌握 高超管理與營銷技巧。葉女士初期雖遇上不少挑 戰，但她抱持「世上無難事」的奮鬥精神，使香 港小交響樂團得以茁壯成長，現時每年在香港的 演出超過100場，表現備受讚賞。樂團首創的「駐 團藝術家」計劃，更為年輕作曲家、表演藝術 家、舞蹈家、編舞家、演員及畫家提供了難能可 貴的合作平台。放眼世界，樂團的足跡多年來遍 及全球40多個城市，並曾應邀參與亞洲內外無數 音樂節，深受樂迷歡迎。 葉女士採取雙管齊下的方式推廣古典音樂，一方 面積極使古典音樂大眾化，另一方面開拓表演平 台，讓新一代音樂家有一展才華的機會。她孜孜 不倦，力求創新，帶領樂團與芭蕾舞、爵士樂、 視覺藝術等不同界別的藝術家聯乘演出，突破框 框。樂團還同時為學童設計饒有趣味的音樂教育 計劃和活動，培養孩子的藝術興趣。 葉女士多年來在世界各地不同的表演舞台及音樂 節獻藝，亦與無數馳名中外的藝術家及頂尖樂團 合作演出，國際地位舉足輕重。跟她合作過的團 人文學榮譽博士 23 體包括中國國家交響樂團、中國愛樂樂團、上海 交響樂團、首爾愛樂樂團、大阪管弦樂團、新日 本愛樂交響樂團、墨爾本交響樂團、法國圖盧茲 國家樂團，以及波蘭華沙愛樂樂團。 葉女士歷年來為音樂鞠躬盡瘁，對指揮界貢獻卓 越，所獲獎項及殊榮不計其數。她除了獲香港特 區政府頒授銅紫荊星章，也是法國國家榮譽騎士 勳章及藝術及文學騎士勳章得主。她亦身為英國 皇家音樂學院院士及香港演藝學院榮譽院士，並 榮膺香港各界婦女聯合協進會「香港六藝卓越女 性」。 葉女士擔任香港小交響樂團音樂總監長達18年， 於2020年卸任後成為樂團桂冠音樂總監，延續她 對古典音樂的長期熱愛。雖然疫症下現場表演被 逼暫停，但她旋即領導樂團舉行網上演奏會及攝 製音樂會電影，以音樂為市民抒懷。 校董會主席，我謹代表香港科技大學校董會，恭 請閣下頒授人文學榮譽博士學位予香港小交響樂 團桂冠音樂總監葉詠詩女士。 Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching Professor Desmond TSOI Yau-Chat Citation 24 MICHAEL G. GALE MEDAL FOR DISTINGUISHED TEACHING The Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching was established by the University Council in 1994 to commemorate the distinguished service of Founding Council Member Mr. Michael G. Gale. It is awarded to the faculty member who best exemplifies the continued pursuit of excellence, devotion to teaching and the ability to inspire and motivate others. This year the University is pleased to present the Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching to Prof. Desmond TSOI Yau-Chat of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), School of Engineering. Prof. Tsoi joined HKUST in 2016 and is currently an Assistant Professor of Engineering Education in CSE. He received his PhD from Nanyang Technological University in 2009 and has taught in various universities in Singapore and Hong Kong prior to joining us. His research interests lie in multimedia technology, computer vision, and web technologies and engineering. Upholding his teaching philosophy of “examples are always more effective than precepts”, Prof. Tsoi adopts student-centered and project-based learning strategies to help students gain realworld knowledge and skills. His five engaging and interactive computer science courses have been proven popular among students from diverse backgrounds and with different learning objectives. For 12 successive semesters from 2016 to 2021, he attained the highest teaching evaluation scores among all faculty members teaching regular undergraduate courses in his department. Committed to educational innovations, Prof. Tsoi has made exemplary efforts to improve teaching efficiency. Together with his research assistants and Final Year Project groups, he developed an online assignment submission and automatic grader system, which has served about 2,500 users including teaching assistants and students to date and graded more than 170,000 assignments in one and a half years. By setting an example to strive for excellence, he always encourages his students to set goals and empowers them to achieve their potential. Under Prof Tsoi’s guidance, his students’ final year projects have been acclaimed internally such as with the President’s Cup and Best Final Year Project awards, and earned external honors including the ASM Technology Award and HKIE Environmental Division Prize. Prof. Tsoi’s passion for education has seen him being recognized with a number of teaching awards. Just a year after joining the University, he was elected one of the Best Ten Lecturers in 2017 and nominated for the Common Core Teaching Excellence Award. He is also a two-time winner of the School of Engineering’s Distinguished Teaching Award, commended first in the academic year 2018-19 and again in 2021-22. 祁敖卓越教學服務獎章 25 Beyond the classroom, Prof. Tsoi devotes his time to curricular and student development at both the departmental and university-wide levels, as well as in other educational settings in Hong Kong. As an active member on departmental curriculum committees, working groups and teams, he takes part in the review of courses and programs and has made valuable recommendations for further improvements. He also collaborates with education platforms at HKUST such as the Student Innovation for Global Health Technology and the Center for Education Innovation to nurture students’ self-confidence and self-directed learning capabilities. Externally, he works with the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong and the School of Professional Education and Executive Development of PolyU to enhance the quality of computer education. For his achievements in teaching and curriculum development, his dedication to students, and his broad contributions to the University’s educational mission, Prof. Tsoi is a well-deserved recipient of the Michael G. Gale Medal, which recognizes, celebrates and rewards distinguished teaching, excellent service, and selfless commitment. 祁敖卓越教學服務獎章 蔡友集教授 讚辭 26 香港科技大學校董會於1994年設立「祁敖卓越教 學服務獎章」，以紀念創校校董祁敖先生對大學 和社會的卓越貢獻。 獲頒此獎的科大教授熱衷教學，不斷追求卓越， 循循善誘，啟導後學，堪稱教師典範。今年， 科大將「祁敖卓越教學服務獎章」授予工學院 計算機科學及工程學系的蔡友集教授。 蔡教授2009年於新加坡南洋理工大學取得博士學 位後，曾於當地及香港多家學府任教。他在2016 年加入科大，現職工程教育助理教授，主要研究 多媒體科技、計算機視覺，以及互聯網技術及 工程。 蔡教授奉行「實例勝於理論」的教育理念，其課 堂採用學生為本及專題研習的教學模式，協助 同學獲取實用知識與技巧。由他講授的五個計算 機科學課程注重互動，趣味盎然，深受來自不同 文化背景及懷有不同學習目標的學生歡迎。蔡教 授所獲的教學表現評分，在2016-2021年的連續 12個學期裡，均屬該學系執教常設本科課程的教 員之中最高，為同僚之模範。 他在教學上致力創新， 以實際行動提升教學 效率，曾聯同其研究助理及畢業班專題研習小組 的學生，成功研發「網上遞交作業及自動評級 系統」，至今已有約2 , 5 0 0 名教學助理及學生 採用，並在短短一年半內為超過170,000份習作 評級。 蔡教授以身作則，矢志追求卓越，經常鼓勵學生 訂定奮鬥目標，並全力協助他們發揮潛能，獲取佳 績。在其指導下，學生的畢業專題研習項目在科 大內外屢獲嘉許，包括勇奪科大「校長杯」、「最 佳畢業項目獎」、校外的「ASM 科技獎」以及香 港工程師學會環境分部「環境論文獎」。 蔡教授對教育的熱誠， 從其多次贏得教學獎 項可見一斑。他加入科大短短一年後， 已入 選「2017年十大最佳講師」，並獲提名競逐「卓越 核心課程教學獎」。隨後在2018-19和2021-22年 度， 工學院更先後兩次向他頒發「卓越教學 獎」，以表揚他的貢獻。 授課之餘，蔡教授亦盡心盡力投入學系、大學以 至校外的課程及學生發展工作。他身兼多個學系 課程委員會、工作小組及團隊的成員，積極參與 審視各項課程，並提出不少寶貴建議。他亦聯同 科大「視野無界」、教育創新中心等平台，協助 學生建立自信及提升自學能力。對外，他還與香 港高等教育科技學院及香港理工大學專業進修學 院合作，提升計算機教育的質素。 MICHAEL G. I am Chen Haiwen, a graduate from the Master of Science in International Management (MIMT) programme. I still remember when applying for the graduate schools, I chose HKUST for its academic excellence, global vision and the “cando” spirit. Besides enjoying the academically rigorous curriculum at HKUST, I also treasured the opportunity to study abroad at HEC Paris School of Management, one of the top universities in Paris, France, where I connected and made friends with the exchange students from 33 other leading business schools through the CEMS Global Alliance. Apart from receiving the solid training in class, I have also learnt how to put theory into practice. Thanks to the robust HKUST business school network, I had the unique opportunity to work on a real-world business project initiated by Jardine Matheson, which sought to explore innovative and sustainable ways of food delivery for reducing pollution in Hong Kong. With the “can-do” spirit and entrepreneurial mindset, we had invaluable takeaways and made a significant impact in this project. Graduation is not an end, but a start of our next journey. On our way to pursuing our dreams and aspirations, failure is inevitable. There will be times when we feel weak, times when we feel lost, and times when we want to give up. At those times, however, we should all remember what we have accomplished here. During the pandemic, for example, we have witnessed how uncertain life can be. But regardless of all the changes and losses in the past two years, we have made it through. We should also remember how we were able to navigate through those darkest moments and sail for the lights. It is our dreams and aspirations that continue to shine the lights. Thank you all! There is no doubt that today marks one of the most important days in our lives. Today not only represents the culmination of no less than 4 years of study at one of the world’s best and most rigorous universities, but it is also a celebration of the decades of hard work that got us to this point in our lives. For many of us, today also holds the special distinction of the conclusion of our formal education. As we flip to a new chapter, we ready ourselves to explore the world and embark on a journey of lifelong learning. In the past several months, many of us have found ourselves in significantly different capacities – as professionals, as graduate researchers, as entrepreneurs and leaders. As we boldly venture into the great unknowns, we are deeply tethered to the experiences that made us who we are today. We relish and reflect upon the memories we made here, the connections we have forged, the struggles we have overcome. To that end, we do not only seek to give ourselves a pat in the back, but more importantly, we also recognize those who have helped us along the way. We would never have made it this far alone, and to those who have raised us up, to those who have taught us and helped us, we are so grateful for all that you have done for us. Looking back on the past couple of years, I am sure that quite a few would agree that our undergraduate journey has been rather special. For one, due to the COVID-19, online distance learning brought its unique set of challenges and opportunities. As much as it forced us to quickly adapt to a new learning format, it also opened up exciting new possibilities, such as online MOOC courses and virtual exchanges to prestigious institutions overseas. Indeed, as the world around us evolves at an ever-quickened pace, I do find solace in knowing that we are already well equipped beyond our years to be resilient and face whatever comes our way. In entering this world-class university, I have greatly advanced my technical expertise as a high-caliber researcher. Indeed, throughout my PhD journey, HKUST has made me feel blessed that I can use state-of-the-art equipment without worrying about financial resources for analysis due to the University’s generosity. Moreover, the University has been highly supportive in enabling us students to gain international exposure. Within my first two years of study, before the pandemic hit, I was able to visit Indonesia, Japan, Korea, and Mainland China, allowing me to meet, learn, and be inspired by like-minded engineers and scientists. I was empowered to be a woman in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), expanding my horizons while developing my global leadership skills. I was also immersed in different cultures, which allowed me to make good friends with people of different nationalities. But as a PhD student, the experience was not all roses and butterflies. Undertaking research was difficult enough. Then the unprecedented COVID-19 outbreak occurred. This led to the closing of the University’s gym, tennis courts, and swimming pool – all previously beneficial for my health. My international travels for conferences halted. Furthermore, the central facilities and laboratories for my experiments had to shut, causing great anxiety as to whether I would graduate on time. Yet HKUST was truly a great help in coping during the trying times of the pandemic. I witnessed how the University placed importance on the mental wellness of students, and wanted to play my part. So I joined the peer companion program where I saw at first-hand how the HKUST’s Counseling and Wellness Center had a safe space and support chat platform where any student at the University could share their problems with peers who were willing to listen non-judgmentally. Likewise, the Engineering Student Ambassador program encouraged me to become a more all-round individual, giving back to the wider community. One activity, for example, involved spraying local schools with the anti-microbial coating, MAP-1, developed by my supervisor’s team, to disinfect the buildings and stop COVID-19 spreading. In the end, the pandemic taught me what matters in life. With the assistance of HKUST and its people, I stayed healthy mentally and physically. Thanks to my supervisor, technicians, lab mates, staff, friends, and family for the guidance and life support. You have been an enormous strength for me. Hard and painful experiences in research are inevitable, but because of them I have been molded into a better and more resilient individual. In the past, I would get frustrated by failure. However, from the lessons learned, I have now gained more confidence in facing new challenges. Fellow graduates, today is our day. All the time and effort that we spent has led to this very moment. Let us savor all the sweetness and bitterness that we have all experienced, the memories that we share together. Looking back from now, these four years was a roller coaster ride. It was a journey full of hurdles, we struggled hard to get through each of them. I still vividly remember being a first-year student stepping into this brand-new environment thinking: what does this place have in store for me? Will my time here be an enjoyable one? It was an age of innocence, we were like birds that have just learnt how to fly, leaping forward out of curiosity. Here at HKUST, we studied hard, we met our peers, we participated in all sorts of fun activities. School was hard, very hard. We always had to pull our brains out just to meet the deadlines. We had to wish for our luck just to enroll in certain courses. We had to Google a lot just to finish an assignment. However, with grit, we persevered through the hardships, we never gave up even though we wanted to, and we somehow made it through. We have grown so much from such an intense academical training, both intellectually and mentally. The pandemic, whether we liked it or not, has been a huge part of our time here. I believe that we already obtained a major in zoom meeting operation well before getting our degrees. During this difficult time, there was no doubt that opportunities were missed. Many of us did not get to go on exchange because of this. Nonetheless, we made the most of the situation and cherished every opportunity that we could get. And here we are, we made it to the end of our journey despite all the difficulties. Words cannot describe the gratefulness I have to HKUST, to everyone that I’ve met here, to the professors that work tirelessly nurturing us, especially when we were lost, to the staff who assisted us throughout the journey and answered our stupid questions, and of course to fellow classmates whom we fought alongside, providing countless support and encouragement all the way. Today marks the end of a chapter of our lives, but a chapter’s end marks the start of a new chapter. We have evolved to become what we are today: we have aspirations.
