I had the opportunity to learn how to deploy design thinking in my technical projects, while also getting in-depth knowledge in product technology. In today’s fast-moving world, it is very important to be a generalist, especially for budding entrepreneurs looking to solve world problems. AT THE FOREFRONT OF ROBOTICS HKUST’s award-winning Robotics Team welcomes robotics enthusiasts from all schools and programs to join one of three sub-teams at the ABU Robocon, MATE ROV underwater robot challenge, and NXP CUP Intelligent Car Racing competition. A LIVING SUSTAINABILITY LAB Our faculty, students and alumni frequently join forces to come up with innovative projects. Funded by the University, these projects draw ideas from different disciplines to come up with smart solutions for sustainable living. As a result, our campus has become known as a testing ground for the smart city movement. HACKHKUST+HARDUST During one of Asia’s largest studentdriven hackathons, students can develop prototypes, meet industry experts, and pitch ideas, all within a 24 or 48-hour window. 8 9 FIRST TASTE OF RESEARCH HKUST gives undergraduate students the opportunity to get involved in research projects at an early stage. INTERNATIONAL GENETICALLY ENGINEERED MACHINES (IGEM) COMPETITION This international competition allows students to explore and develop synthetic biology solutions then share their findings at the annual iGEM jamboree. Opened in Fall 2021, the Shaw Auditorium is the new cultural hub for performing arts and large-scale events. 16 17 BROAD-BASED CURRICULUM We give students great flexibility to create their own path. Students can expand their intellectual horizons in a diverse set of subjects while gaining specific skills and knowledge in their chosen area of specialty. A minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a 4-year curriculum. SCHOOL-BASED AND PROGRAM-BASED ADMISSIONS Students who wish to spend more time exploring their interests may apply to the School of Science, School of Engineering, or School of Business and Management via the “School-based Admissions” route before deciding their major. Students will be admitted to the respective School and choose their major program(s) at the end of the first two or three semesters. Students who have already had a keen interest in specific program(s) may apply and be directly admitted to the program(s) of their choice via the Program-based Admissions. UNIVERSITY COMMON CORE The Common Core Program offers hundreds of courses in arts, languages, health and wellbeing, humanities, quantitative reasoning, science and technology, and social analysis. The program will soon undergo an evolution, not only helping students to build a strong foundation for whole person development, but also providing them with ample opportunities to get handson experiences in the fields of their choosing.
