We share the same passion for our dreams." Co-founders of MamaHelpers, Amanda and Yan, came up with an idea the first day they met at HKUST. The result from that meeting was a mobile app-based start-up that matches domestic helpers and agencies with employers. Just months after its soft launch, MamaHelpers, the first free, open domestic helper database in Hong Kong, has attracted 30,000 members, ma,nta,ned a database of more than 20,000 helper profiles, and attracted 9,000 active users daily. Throughout the journey, HKUST served more than a meeting ground. They chose supervisors who are experts in data and information management and cyber-security respectively, offering substantial support to help the duo actualize their dream. They have also formed a close community with the other student-entrepreneurs in their program. They learn from each other through sharing of mistakes made and lessons learned. The advice they got from them has proved to be helpful to their company. Having received various innovation and funding awards, MamaHelpers has now confirmed partnerships in Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines, and is poised to expand to the Southeast Asian market. Kenneth Au Co-founder & Lead developer, UMIX Music limited MPhil Student in Computer Science and Engineering Benjamin Lai Co-founder & Lead designer, UMIX Music Limited MPhil Student in Electronic and Computer Engineering "HKUST has a well-constructed academic atmosphere, eco-system and network, providing us with many opportunities to turn our ideas into reality." Kenneth and Benjamin, who both are enthusiastic about music and technology, teamed up to develop UM1x, a portable music production app which allows users to compose music anywhere at any time, as well as reducing the complexity of the process. The pair believes that their postgraduate studies at HKUST provided them with excellent technical skills and knowledge base. A sound academic foundation that assisted them 1n conducting the necessary research and development involved in creating such a complex app. Kenneth and Benjamin also cite the diverse learning environment and hands-on style of education at HKUST as being crucial to their success. They appreciated the opportunities to participate in different engineering proJects, like robotics, software design at HKUST which helped them to widen their vision and combine their engineering know-how with the business acumen necessary for a start-up. UMix has garnered them numerous industry awards, including the Grand and Gold Awards at the Hong Kong ICT Awards in 2018.
