Nature-loving Marine Scientists Preserving Our Habitats for Future Generations The young Prof Karen Chan, HKUST?s Assistant Professor of Life Science, and her equally energetic postgraduate students are a group of nature-loving talents who spend time at HKUST?s Coastal Marine Lab (CML) to work with crabs, urchins, mussels, and oysters. At the waterfront Lab which captures exclusive sea views and the aroma of sea water, they take their intellectual pursuits seriously while enjoying everything that Mother Nature has to offer.

HKSAR, encompassing as much as 26% of the marine biodiversity of China, has plenty to offer as far as marine biology and oceanography are concerned. HKUST, with its Coastal Marine Lab, provides an ideal habitat for marine scientists to discover the secret behind their beloved marine organisms.

?Despite the fact that Hong Kong is a coastal city, we know very little about the ocean,? said Wilson Yeung, a local MPhil student of Life Science. ?After completing undergraduate studies at HKUST and the final year project under the supervision of Prof Chan, I was thrilled to discover that the ocean plays a fundamental role in our daily lives. Studying marine organisms at their larval stages is crucial to learning about how the changing environment impacts marine life, especially how the population is sustained.?

Now working on one of Prof Chan?s research themes about how climate change impacts on living organisms, Wilson?s mission starts with feeding his mussels and helping them bear babies, after which he can experiment on these larvae and develop a model to explore how these organisms respond to warming temperature.

Elizaldy Maboloc, a PhD student in Marine Environmental Science came to Hong Kong from the Philippines as a recipient of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship. Specializing in oceanic acidification and its impact on marine organisms, he studies snails, an invasive species in Hong Kong, and tries to fill in current knowledge gaps.

?Acidification affects not only the organisms being studied, but the food they are eating. I thus explore the long term, transgenerational effects of exposure on ecological interactions, the ways in which organisms adapt, and the mechanism behind their survival,? Elizaldy elaborated. ?I hope to formulate new conservation strategies through research to ultimately protect the rich biodiversity in my home country.?

Jan Schniete, a German student of physics from the UK?s University of Strathclyde, has come to HKUST for seven weeks as a visiting PhD student. ?I work on high-resolution microscopes and have no prior experience with living organisms. During these weeks at HKUST, I learn about sea urchins, take videos, acquire data, and create velocity maps. Working on the imaging side of things, my goal is to come up with an application dedicated to the imaging of larvae. Since what works well with organisms may not work well with microscopes, I need to find a solution to combine the best of both worlds.?

First-class lab environment

Team members talked with excitement about HKUST?s superb lab environment, saying that it is a blessing to conduct top-notch research here. ?The Coastal Marine Lab (CML) provides a stable environment with handy equipment so that we can focus on our research and innovation. The Center of Laboratory Supplies (CLS) on the other hand, enables shared equipment which provides not only convenience but also alleviates the burden of each individual lab to keep stock of loads of equipment separately,? said Wilson.

Prof Chan and her team especially praised the seasoned lab technician, the ?God-sent? expert Dr Tam Yin-ki at the Coastal Marine Lab, for her commitment to help solve problems almost on a 24/7 basis.

Jan echoed, ?The equipment here is at least on par with, if not better than those I see elsewhere. Here at HKUST, we have permanent staff to take care of lab facilities; this is a privilege not found in many universities around the world.?

Also accessible from HKUST are custom-made equipment from the University?s Design and Manufacturing Services Facility (DMSF), other equipment such as the Liquid Chromatograph(LC) - Mass Spectrometer(MS) from the Environmental Central Facility (ECF), as well as the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) from the Materials Characterization and Preparation Facility (MCPF), just to name a few. Meeting those with ?big names? in person

On top, HKUST?s research platform encompasses research exchange opportunities and global travel grant, of which Elizaldy has taken full advantage. He has attended major conferences and courses abroad ranging from Larval Biology at the Friday Harbor Labs at the University of Washington, Larval Biology Symposium in Honolulu, to Annual Meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) in New Orleans. There, he met face-to-face with ?those big names you read on academic papers? such as Richard Strathmann from the University of Washington and Rachel Collin from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI).

Wilson has also widened his exposure via opportunities such as a workshop organized jointly by the academia and professional bodies with support from government departments on eco-shoreline. The area of study new to Hong Kong explores how, instead of just straightening shorelines with concrete walls, it is possible also to have eco-friendly shorelines designed to enable growth of living organisms and sustainable coastal development. Order among the hustle and bustle

Prof Chan has cultivated a close and friendly relationship among her students, resulting in a close-knit and fun-loving dream team for work, studies and play. As Elizaldy mentioned, ?We are not only lab mates, but also friends or even family?. For instance, they had outings in Hong Kong?s countryside, for which Jan recalled with amusement the unexpected ?attack? by a wild boar in the city often called ?the concrete jungle?.

At HKUST?s seaside campus, Wilson?s favorite activity is to climb up and down the rocky beach in a sunny day under the beautiful blue sky and light cirrus to find mussels for his research. Besides, he loves playing handball and other sports for free on campus.

Both Elizaldy and Jan favor walking around the campus and its neighboring woods to see sunrise and to enjoy the fresh air.

During their stay in Hong Kong, the overseas students have developed new and existing hobbies. Jan who is a lover of board games has quickly picked up Chinese mahjong and expeditiously beat his teammates, a game which he refers to as one about logic and luck. Elizaldy is happy to find stores selling American comic books, which are stress relievers for the high achiever.

They are equally impressed by the ?orderly crowdedness? in Hong Kong. ?It is amazing: it?s crowded but there?s an order in it. There are pedestrian walking districts, and drivers respect rules to give way. I?ll miss the crowd here,? said Elizaldy from the Philippines. Jan agreed, noting that it was quite a compliment coming from a German whose countrymen are known for their efficiency, ?There are arrows on the ground at platforms of the subway, and people follow them; it?s extremely efficient.? As for Prof Karen Chan, she joined HKUST as an Assistant Professor after completing BSc Program in Environmental Life Science at the University of Hong Kong, MSc and PhD Programs in Oceanography at the University of Washington, and working as a postdoctoral scholar at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).

Apart from exploring how the environment impacts living organisms and vice versa, her team also conducts surveys in Hong Kong waters. Being described by her postgraduate students as an approachable professor who maintains open communication with them especially regarding problems and solutions, Prof Chan is also keen on nurturing curious young minds, promoting science literacy in addition to seeking advancement in K-12 classrooms. With a passion for nature and teaching, it is perhaps not surprising that she met her other half, a physicist with the same passion, at HKUST.

And her motto: 'In the end, we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we are taught,', said forestry engineer Baba Dioum in his address to the United Nations five decades ago.

Prof Chan has certainly been successful in her education mission: Wilson has set his mind on passing on his knowledge and passion to high school students, Elizaldy on conserving marine environment back home, and Jan on enhancing technologies to enable the pursuits of marine scientists.

A Tale of Two Students On first sight, Hugo Wing Lun Mar and Steve Weipeng Zhuo have nothing in common. Hugo is a local student with a background in business administration, and Steve a student from Fujian, China, studying computer science, applied mathematics and engineering.

Hugo is completing his MPhil in Technology, Leadership and Entrepreneurship (TLE), while Steve is working towards PhD in Computer Science and Engineering. Hugo has become the CEO and Co-founder of the start-up P-Sense before graduation; Steve has just returned to the academia after four years as an entrepreneur and the head of development.

What puts them together is the entrepreneurial spirit, inspired by their mentor Prof Gary Chan from HKUST?s Department of Computer Science and Engineering, to make a difference with their expertise: whereas Hugo co-founded P-Sense with the professor, Steve is one of the smart brains behind Prof Chan?s research on indoor localization. A super connector among talents

Hugo?s story at HKUST began in 2012 as he became an undergraduate student of business administration with a minor in social science. He had already found the entrepreneur in him then, as he co-founded Cafeology, a coffee corner at ?the BASE?, which is HKUST?s co-working space. He had also led a team to win the Best Pitch Award at Startup Weekend, Hamburg, presenting to judges from Google and Microsoft. Upon obtaining Bachelor of Business Administration at HKUST, instead of working in investment banks or as a management trainee, he was attracted by HKUST?s MPhil Program in Technology, Leadership and Entrepreneurship, which has not only gained worldwide recognition but also promises flexibility and diversity in program offerings to prepare individuals for entrepreneurship.

To materialize his entrepreneurial dream, the former business major, now in the technology-oriented program, quickly picked up data analytics and other technical know-how. Describing the TLE program as ?a safety net?, Hugo leveraged the University?s support and platform to experience entrepreneurship and garner awards ranging from Hong Kong ICT Awards (bronze), JCI Next Step Challenge (champion), HKUST One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition (best student award) to HKUST Challenge Cup (first class award). Within a year after joining the program, he co-founded P-Sense with Prof Chan, who is also HKUST?s Director of Entrepreneurship Center, to spearhead commercialization of applied research.

?There are many capable people around the world, and they need someone to pull them together to do great things. I would love to play this connector role so that talents can deliver their best,? said Hugo.

At P-Sense, Prof Chan specializes in research and establishing industry connections, while Hugo liaises with clients to offer sound solutions. The start-up has been sponsored by client and investor New World Development Research to engage in a technology which can be used at shopping malls, model suites, exhibitions as well as the Hong Kong International Airport to learn about people flow and duration of stay, facilitate crowd control, enhance floor layout and rental decisions. A fan of gangster movies with high honors

Back in Fujian more than a decade ago, Steve was attracted to HKUST because of its high ranking especially in computer science and engineering, its youthful dynamism, as well as the reputation of then President Paul Chu. Choosing to apply for HKUST in Hong Kong only, he landed at the University with a four-year scholarship and became so impressed that he continued to pursue his MPhil here. Then after acquiring plenty of market experience during the four years as a technology entrepreneur in Guangdong, he once again chose HKUST for his doctoral studies. As a recipient of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme, he returned to the University to join his former thesis supervisor Prof Chan in his technology pursuit a year ago.

Steve is currently working in one of Prof Chan?s research teams with a focus on indoor localization. ?Whereas outdoor localization has already been solved by GPS, GPS signals are not able to penetrate indoor areas. Also, people generally spend 70% of their time indoors. Our research thus aims at pinpointing people?s indoor locations real-time through their mobile phones through crowdsourcing and data mining, so that we can predict their locations next time they visit. Applying this in shopping malls, we can help predict people?s shopping habits. Using this in hospitals, we can help monitor and prevent patients from trespassing or getting lost.?

The PhD student is happy to work with research teams focusing on video sensing, big data and indoor localization. ?The three areas are interrelated and the teams have good relationships. We discuss a lot and go to competitions together, winning awards in Hong Kong ICT Awards and now entering a competition on WeChat Mini Programs.

Drawing support from HKUST?s research and exchange platform, Steve had been to Princeton University as a visiting scholar, enjoyed the precious chance to work with giants such as Google, attended important conferences with travel subsidies and published a paper as early as the time when he was an MPhil student.

The top student is not only focused on studying. A lover of Cantonese comedies as well as gangster movies even before coming to Hong Kong, he was a committee member of HKUST?s Film Society during undergraduate years and quickly became a fluent speaker of Cantonese. ?We had organized lots of film nights showing movies by my beloved artists and directors such as Sean Ching-wan Lau, Nick Ka-fai Cheung, Andrew Wai-keung Lau, Dante Chiu-yin Lam, and of course my all-time favorite Infernal Affairs. I was impressed by local students? organizational skills; we prepared a detailed budget plan at the beginning of the year, and we were able to meet each item at the end of the year,? Steve noted.

Later as a postgraduate student, Steve became the hall tutor of Hall Six. ?Since I had a good time there as an undergraduate student, I wanted to keep in close contact with students from diverse backgrounds. I made friends with hall mates from territories as far as Belgium, Germany and Korea, as well as from Mainland and Hong Kong.

Other fun activities that Steve did at HKUST included learning to swim in his adulthood as he fell in love with HKUST?s fabulous swimming pool, and having ventures in Sai Kung waters during boat trips for squid-fishing.

?HKUST exceeds my expectations: the view is excellent, the professors and students are kind and of high quality,? said Steve. He finds local students to be knowledgeable about what happens around them in the community. As a non-local student, he thinks students from different nationalities should take the initiative to integrate into the diverse student community. Precious gems at HKUST

What is HKUST?s gem in the eyes of the students? Both Steve and Hugo speak highly of Prof Gary Chan, describing him as a patient and well-mannered scholar who is an excellent mentor, academic and business partner.

On top of that, Hugo thinks HKUST Business School Central, located at the Hong Kong Club Building right in Hong Kong?s financial hub, is marvelous not only because of its spectacular view facing Victoria Harbour, but because it hosts meaningful courses such as those about social enterprise.

For Steve, one of the gems is HKUST?s ?Wisdom Stone?. The rumor goes that students who touch the stone would either get A+ or failing grades (or as corrected by Hugo, expulsion from school).

So how was it for Steve after touching the ?legendary? stone? The diligent student finished his undergraduate studies with First Class Honors and acquired PhD Fellowship to pursue doctoral studies, demonstrating how to ?work hard and play hard?, which has always been a spirit shared among the HKUST community.

Making Waves with Groundbreaking Research An invisibility cloak might sound like something from Star Trek or Harry Potter but scientists say they may soon be able to turn fiction into fact. Dr Yun Lai, a physics professor at Nanjing University in Nanjing, China, has been conducting frontier research in cloaking and metamaterials since his PhD studies at HKUST on blocking sound waves. Research into the unique materials, which demonstrates how light could be bent around objects to render the objects invisible, has become a hot topic since its initial discovery in 2006. A brand-new way of cloaking

Hong Kong has been playing an important role in some of the advances in the field, and Lai is among one of the physicists leading the way. After completing his PhD at HKUST in 2005, Lai worked under Prof Che Ting Chan to study metamaterials and cloaking. They were inspired by the research of British theoretical physicist Prof Sir John Pendry, a pioneer in cloaking using metamaterials which are artificially designed structures with unique optical properties non-existent in nature.

The initial work relied on an effect similar to that of mirage, where light is bent to create optical illusions. Then in 2009, Lai and his colleagues made an important discovery, opening a new area of research.

?I accidentally found that there is another way of cloaking,? he said. ?With the original cloaking method, you have to cover the object with something resembling Harry Potter?s cloak. We, on the other hand, found that sometimes you do not need to cover the object. Instead, you can put a cloaking device right next to the object to be cloaked and obtain the same effect.?

This brand new way of cloaking is based on creating wave interference between the cloaking device and the object. ?This was actually quite an astonishing result at that time,? Lai continued.

Amazing as it appears, one should not expect to be walking around Hong Kong under an invisibility cloak anytime soon. At the moment, invisibility is limited to long wavelengths such as microwaves. Creating invisibility in the optical spectrum remains work-in-progress. ?For optical cloaking, it may take some time to fabricate a material and device that can realize a nice effect,? he mentioned. Illusion optics surpassing current VR technology

Lai entered the field after researching artificial acoustic structures such as phononic crystals during his PhD studies. The structures are materials that can be designed to prevent selected ranges of frequencies from being transmitted through the material. While this might seem to be a far cry from invisibility cloaks, the large-scale calculations and extensive programming, required to engineer the sound-blocking properties of such crystals, provided Lai with a solid background for understanding how waves interact with microstructures.

In fact, Lai has not completely left this work behind. Instead, he continues to study acoustics and has conducted research to design a solid material that only allows acoustic waves to propagate. The research may have applications on earthquake-proofing buildings. In future, he hopes to create a new type of mesh structure that will allow air to flow across it while blocking sound at the same time.

Metamaterials and cloaking continue to be Lai?s core field of study for now, thanks to the exciting applications in relation to the realization of such technologies. His work on cloaking led to the discovery of a new technique for creating optical illusions that might one day be used to make 3D movies and games indistinguishable from reality.

?If you have an apple and you cloak it by using a free space, we are effectively replacing the apple with the free space,? said Lai. ?What if we use something else instead of the free space? Based on this question, we proposed the concept of replacing an apple with a banana, which is now called illusion optics. This may have some important applications in future because we can create ultra illusions using this technique that are perfect.?

The word ?perfect? was not used casually. Lai explained that Maxwell?s equations ? forming the foundation of classical electromagnetism, optics and electric circuits ? guarantee that the illusion is perfect. This is a very different concept to holography ? the science and practice of making holograms ? where it is always possible to see the illusion as an illusion. It also differs from conventional 3D effects used in movies, which rely on the optical difference between your left and right eyes to create an artificial sense of three dimensions.

With illusion optics, it should be possible to create a 3D display device that can easily surpass current Virtual Reality (VR) technology. ?I am still working on it,? said Lai. ?In principle, it is possible to solve the problems of virtual reality devices in relation to users? feeling of dizziness and discomfort after using the devices for a long time.?

It is believed that today?s VR headsets bring about discomfort because they do not create a true three-dimensional optical field, which can be achieved with illusion optics. ?With illusion optics, if you have an illusion banana, it is exactly the same as a real banana,? Lai noted. A vision for thinner invisibility cloaks

Despite challenges to be met, Lai predicts that the technology could be turned into practical applications very soon in the form of television screens or glasses.

Other areas for future research include ultra-transparent materials that may one day enable the development of much thinner invisibility cloaks. ?We have done experiments to verify the effect, and the results are reasonably good,? Lai remarked. ?With these meta-surfaces, we can shrink the cloaking shell into something much thinner and much more similar to Harry Potter?s cloak.?

Lai has been selected to be one of China?s high-profile Young Thousand Talents. In future, he aspires to continue making waves with more ground-breaking research.

Finding Inspiration from Mother Earth Geotechnical engineering (GTE) may not be as well-known as some other engineering disciplines, yet when Dr Johnny Chi-yin Cheuk came across a related course at HKUST, he knew that geotechnical engineering was the right discipline for him.

Soil mechanics is about the behavior of soils, and geotechnical engineering is the science that explains the mechanics of soil and rock as well as their roles in human development. It was the inspirational teaching of an undergraduate course in soil mechanics at HKUST that sets Cheuk on the path towards a career in geotechnical engineering. A geotechnical engineer deals with the analysis, design and construction of structures supported by soil or rock, such as foundations, slopes, embankments, roadways, tunnels and landfills.

Cheuk, who achieved BEng and MPhil degrees from HKUST and went on to do PhD at the University of Cambridge, is now working for leading engineering consulting company AECOM in Hong Kong as Director of Operations and Executive Director of its geotechnical division. AECOM?s major projects include the Central?Wan Chai Bypass, the Tuen Mun?Chek Lap Kok Link, the Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point and the Hong Kong International Airport?s Third Runway Passenger Building. Joining AECOM in 2009, Cheuk was named Young Engineer of the Year by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) in 2013. The road less traveled

Although initially geotechnical engineering was not on Cheuk?s radar, its introduction in HKUST?s undergraduate program immediately captured the attention and imagination of the young engineering student.

?I only started learning about geotechnical engineering in my second year, when I took a course in soil mechanics,? he said. ?I was very interested, partly because of Prof Douglas B Rigby. Good lecturers have huge and positive influence on students? development of interest in the subject matters. Prof Rigby started from the very basics to inspire students about how interesting the behavior of soil can be. He also told us about all the intriguing problems to be solved.?

When Cheuk graduated with BEng in 1999, instead of going into structural or hydraulics engineering, he fell in love with geotechnical engineering. ?In the end, I chose geotechnical engineering, partly because of the challenges and opportunities ahead.?

This strong interest motivated him for further studies. ?Having decided to go for a research degree, I spoke to a lot of professors at HKUST. Prof Charles W W Ng once and again inspired me by reminding me about the interesting geotechnical engineering projects going on. I chose one of them, pursued MPhil at HKUST and got into geotechnical engineering through the research project.? Prof Ng is Chair Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, CLP Holdings Professor of Sustainability, and Associate Vice-President (Research and Development) at HKUST.

?HKUST?s MPhil was the gateway that helped me start my career in geotechnical engineering,? Cheuk added. ?Otherwise I might have chosen structural engineering. The program was the starting point of my geotechnical engineering career.?

?The program at HKUST helped lay an important foundation for my career since it involved a joint project sponsored by the Government. Since HKIE was also involved in the project, I got to know many seasoned engineers. It was a very useful experience. More importantly, I earned the precious opportunity to go to Cambridge for PhD immediately after.? Growing Impact

The importance of geotechnical engineering has grown since Cheuk first entered the field, as more research has been done regarding how soil and rocks behave. It was still a new area of engineering inquiry in the late 1990s, and remains that way to some extent even now.

?Lots of questions are still open questions. It is slightly better than it was 20 years ago but geotechnical engineering is still a relatively new subject. This is because traditionally civil engineers would deal with soil or rocks, and thus geotechnical engineering is sometimes considered to be a minor subject.?

Where people live has had an impact on the role of geotechnical engineering. ?Since a lot of people live near hillsides, we need a special group of engineers to deal with geotechnical problems. The role of geotechnical engineers has become much more important in the last several decades.?

Cheuk believes his MPhil has been significant in many ways. ?The training at the two-year MPhil at HKUST was very useful,? he said. ?When dealing with a problem in real life, we still need to have some sort of research mindset, as traditional ways are not always the best.? Rather, he believes in being creative and innovative.

?I was trained to be critical,? Cheuk noted. ?To deal with a technical problem, I need to think independently using the knowledge I have acquired. Having trained myself to search for new knowledge, I try to solve problems unconventionally.?

?It was HKUST?s scholarship and other strengths that attracted me to stay here for postgraduate studies. HKUST was still a very young and new university then, yet our professors were already well-known and many of them were leading experts in the world. Our facilities have always been fantastic. I had never wanted to go elsewhere,? said Cheuk with pride.

HKUST has been drawing top PhD students from around the world with the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKFPS) established by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council. This year, the University has again attracted the largest number of awardees among institutions in Hong Kong, topping the list for seven consecutive years since 2012/13.

Events Roundup Life and Scientific Career in a Changing World

The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship & Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Distinguished Lecture by Prof Yigong Shi in March attracted a full house of audience encompassing Hong Kong PhD Fellows, awardees of Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program, professors and students. The guest speaker Prof Shi, President of the Westlake Institute for Advanced Study, shared insights on ?Life and Scientific Career in a Changing World?. Bestowed with numerous international awards and accolades, the world-renowned structural biologist inspired the audience with his pursuit in life and how he was motivated to take this extraordinary path. To help interested students learn more about HKUST?s postgraduate program offerings, an Information Session on MPhil and PhD Studies was held in March. Following an introductory talk on research studies by Prof Charles W W Ng, Associate Vice-President for Research and Development, three postgraduate students shared how the University?s promising programs enabled them to make an impact in the world. This was followed by breakout sessions during which participants discussed their study plans with representatives from various Schools and the Interdisciplinary Programs Office. Warm Start for New Arrivals

Welcome receptions for postgraduate students are held every year before the new academic year commences. The receptions are meant for new postgraduate students to celebrate the start of their academic journeys and learn useful tips about the University. Apart from an introductory and welcome talk by senior management, representatives of the University give introduction about student services ranging from language education, library services to counseling and career advice, among others. Participants also have the chance to engage in in-depth discussions with the service-providing units during breakout sessions.
