I also extend joyful greetings to graduates who are sharing the occasion with us virtually. Class of 2021, I congratulate you all on your achievements amid unprecedented times. The pandemic has not only tested our adaptability to change and uncertainty, but also served as a powerful wake-up call for all inhabitants of Planet Earth to come together to address a growing list of critical challenges, ranging from public health to climate change and environmental degradation. We are reminded, now more than ever, to learn, to invent, and to be open-minded. As global citizens, we need to take collective action in building a sustainable future that we commonly share, with an innovative spirit, sensitivity to equality, respect for diversity, empathy for the underprivileged, and do so with passion and determination. We are now immersed in a world filled with international and social divides, along with hard choices between growth and conservation, technological innovation versus individual rights and options, and the irony of open, abundant information challenging rational judgment. The education, training, and insights you received at HKUST have helped you lay a firm foundation from which you are now ready to inspire and engage with other people to truly contribute to the world. Embrace challenges, exercise discretion and independent judgment when faced with unforeseeable events in life. And always, remain resilient. Graduates, I am so very proud of you. Today, I take great pleasure in being here with you, in person, to witness this most cherished ceremony of your academic life. The joyous occasion also signifies a historic and exciting moment as you are the inaugural class of graduates to celebrate your Congregation at the new Shaw Auditorium, which has opened just as the University reaches its 30th anniversary milestone this year. For graduates who cannot attend physically and are watching live from your homes around the world, we miss your presence and I look forward to the day when I can welcome you back to the campus as proud alumni of HKUST Engineering. This year, we will confer more than 1,800 engineering degrees, spanning more than 50 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs. These degrees represent the hard work and accomplishments of our newest graduating class, who have persisted with exceptional determination, resilience, and courage through a time of extraordinary challenges and uncertainty to complete their studies. Address by the Dean of Engineering Professor Tim CHENG Kwang-Ting Graduates, I am proud of your perseverance and achievements during your time at HKUST. Over the testing times of the pandemic, you adapted and moved forward. You found new ways to learn, to grow, and to connect with each other – ways that would not have been possible even a few years ago. I believe such experiences will leave you with confidence that you can overcome future challenges and that even the biggest problems have solutions. I am honored to stand before you today and reflect on our collective journey. As the first batch of students graduating from the BEng in Sustainable Energy Engineering (SUSEE) program, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to all faculty members, especially Prof. SHAO Minhua and Prof. Frank LAM who patiently guided me through my studies. Your support has enabled me to achieve my full potential. Dear parents and families, all of us also give you our heartfelt thanks, as it is your love and faith that have helped us sail through all the challenges. I believe everyone has had their own unique experiences during their time at HKUST. For me, participating in the Chem-E-Car competition was a definitive moment – an exacting yet enriching experience that instilled in me a resolute desire to go into research following graduation. I am truly proud of being a part of this family. As a graduate from the Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering programs, I also had the chance to experience the many opportunities that the University and department offered us. The undergraduate research and teaching opportunities sparked my interest in pursuing further research in academia. Meanwhile, the exchange program and industrial collaborations inspired me to think from innovative perspectives and enabled me to collaborate with bright minds in Hong Kong and across the globe. Most importantly, all these experiences provided me with a chance to explore a range of fields, demonstrating the versatility and multidisciplinary nature of our department. Hence, I am proud to be a graduate of these programs from this University. On behalf of my fellow graduates, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the professors and staff members who supported and inspired us throughout the years and made all of this possible. I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all graduates. Despite the challenges and difficulties that we faced, we made it! And after the ZOOM lectures in the past academic year, I am grateful that we are able to gather today and celebrate our achievements in person. Thanks, too, to our families, friends, faculty members, and staff for their constant support and guidance throughout our University life. I still remember the first day we stepped on to the campus as young, timid freshers surrounded by endless possibilities. It was a little scary at first, but exciting. After a year, we became sophomores who luckily got into computer engineering and started getting the hang of things. Then in our third year, we continued to grow personally and professionally through an internship, a hackathon, or an exchange. Our final year was a challenging time as COVID-19 stopped us from meeting face to face and made the competitive job market even tougher. But looking at us now, we have become the Class of Resilience. All of our hard work has paid off, and we are ready to embark on a new challenge. Just as the saying goes, a career is a marathon, not a sprint. After today, some of us might be running faster at the beginning of our careers, some of us might start at a slower pace. There is no need to compare with one another because everyone runs at their own speed in life. With perseverance and determination, I believe our class can do anything we set our minds to achieve. Having said that, recovery is very important in a marathon. While we keep pushing ourselves to realize our true potential, let’s not forget to take good care of our mental and physical health. To start, I would like to congratulate all my fellow Civil and Environmental Engineering graduates for accomplishing one of the milestones in life after completing their studies at HKUST. This ceremony is indeed a very special one as we are the first batch of graduates receiving our degrees in the newly built Shaw Auditorium, a masterpiece of structural engineering. To quote Elon Musk, “Engineering is the closest thing to magic that exists in the world”. It is our job to make the magic work, and deliver this amazing gift of mankind to the people in need, ranging from building skyscrapers, bridges, and tunnels to dealing with drainage, hydraulics, and railway systems, for the betterment of the community. With a belief in building a better future for the next generation, we are capable of making a significant contribution to society and transforming the community to a sustainable and secure home. Throughout these four years, we have experienced joy; and we have also shed tears. We will never forget how we pulled countless all-nighters in the library for our structural analysis and fluid mechanics courses and capstone projects. Nevertheless, such times have further equipped us with the knowledge and mentality to cope with challenges in the future. Thank you, HKUST, for the ups and downs encountered that have enriched our school life. I would also like to say a big thank you to the professors, staff, parents, and friends who have given us their support. I am sure all the graduates here are ready to begin the next page of their lives. The future is always bright and full of opportunities, but there are also unforeseeable hurdles that we will have to face on our own as engineers. Despite all the uncertainties and difficulties, though, we will always have each other’s back and will work hand in hand to build a better Hong Kong. Last but not least, I would like to again congratulate the Class of 2021, and extend my deepest gratitude to all graduates, faculty members, staff, and parents for making this unforgettable day happen. We made it! I would also like to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported me in the past four years: my family back home, my friends who turned into family, my professors, and everyone that I have had the chance to meet along this journey. HKUST is the place that we all chose to build our careers, our lives, and ourselves. We chose to grow here. With all the chaos that came with doing our programming assignments at 4 am in the Learning Commons, and spending at least one night crying in the 4th floor labs. I know I did. While there were times we questioned the “meaning” of everything, and if all of this was “worth it”, these past few years have felt like a voyage. Today it is finally coming to an end, returning all of us as full-grown adults. When I chose to study computer science, I did not realize the gender gap in the industry. I found myself doubting at every step if I was “good enough” to be here. I struggled with accepting and acknowledging my accomplishments because sometimes it felt like I didn’t fit in. But I am here now having made it! And for that, I am incredibly proud of myself. Now, as a woman in tech, I feel it is my responsibility to shatter these stereotypes in the future, and I hope you will too. As an international student at HKUST, I have never felt more welcome in a community. This campus blessed us with lifelong friends and unforgettable memories. So, finally, I would like to say, Class of 2021, we went through a lot together. We saw things that will forever be part of history. We saw Hong Kong and the world change overnight. To say that these were extraordinary years of our lives would be an understatement. I am honored to be chosen to speak on behalf of my fellow Electronic Engineering graduates. First, I must express my deepest thanks and gratitude to our parents, friends, and HKUST faculty and staff. Without their encouragement and support, we would not have made it here today. Even though half of our university life was transformed into virtual learning and meetings, physical distance never proved to be a barrier. I am very proud to now have so many Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE) friends. All of us worked extremely hard to achieve our goal, and along the way created many meaningful and unforgettable memories during these few years at HKUST. When I was in Year 2, I joined the ECE Students’ Society as an Executive Committee member, which allowed me to embrace different opportunities and gain valuable experience. Through serving my ECE fellow students, I was able to step out of my comfort zone to learn beyond the engineering field. I became willing to accept failure and share achievements as a team. All these different types of knowledge had a positive impact on me and brought new insights to my academic learning. Trial and error became my usual approach, and a highly valued aspect of these years of study. While never daunted by obstacles, I was also strongly motivated at HKUST to start new chapters and pursue breakthroughs. Through my learning journey in Electronic Engineering, I have been fortified and equipped to overcome unforeseen challenges. Congratulations again to all Electronic Engineering graduates! We are all very grateful that you can celebrate such an important moment with us. The occasion makes me recall pre-COVID-19 days when I was able to meet friends, team up with my classmates, and join various competitions and events. The countless days and nights we spent together in the library rushing to meet deadlines still remain fresh in my memory. These valuable experiences formed a great part of my University life, made special by the support received from my teammates, friends, family, faculty, and staff. However, when COVID-19 hit Hong Kong in Fall 2019, our daily lives drastically changed. We had to wear masks when going out. We needed to take classes via Zoom. Yet, the flip side of the coin was the pandemic brought fresh learning opportunities. In the past two years, I have participated in virtual site visits and online business etiquette workshops. I also strongly feel that our connections and ways of communication have now evolved. COVID-19 has shaped us, the Class of 2021, to be more agile and adaptive – qualities that are the keys to success in this dynamic and ever-changing world. Congratulations again to all my friends! In 2017, I wanted to make the world a better place and came here with lots of questions. I had a vision of the future and wanted to work with likeminded peers to make this dream possible. I soon realized how special my classmates were and, over the past four years, have continuously been inspired by them. Today, I have new perspectives, engineering skill sets, and have turned my big vision into achievable goals. HKUST certainly broadened my horizons. I have worked on aerospace projects with students from different backgrounds and realized how enlightening ideas from fellow students can be. The University has been a platform for us to discuss our views constructively and to form lifelong friendships, thanks to all the efforts of instructors and teaching staff. It also supported my participation in two overseas attachment programs, one in the United States and one in Tokyo, both of which helped shape me into a global citizen with an international outlook. Furthermore, HKUST allowed me to acquire the skills and knowledge to turn my dream into reality. In addition to lectures, we were able to connect with and learn from entrepreneurs and industry leaders in diverse fields. There were also internship opportunities and competitions for us to join. I came here with a passion for aerospace engineering and a head full of dreams. I now graduate with strengthened aspirations, achievable goals, along with peers who want to improve the world together. Today, standing here with everyone and celebrating this special day actualizes how much of an impact HKUST has had on our lives in making us hardworking, sociable, and well-rounded individuals. Being the first graduate of Integrative Systems and Design, I was extremely lucky to see engineering from a very practical perspective. Not only did this degree train me to develop hands-on prototyping skills, it also gave me the tools and design-thinking mindset to solve complex societal problems with technology. In fact, working with my fellow classmates and professors every day to turn an idea into reality gave me a glimpse of the real world. Four years back, I could not have imagined that I would have the chance to be involved with so many innovative projects. HKUST made me believe that the sky’s the limit. Other than academic knowledge, the School of Engineering gave us the opportunity to undertake exchange semesters, internships, student ambassador programs, and innovative programs such as SIGHT, where undergraduates work on practical solutions to healthcare problems around the world – all of which broadened our horizons beyond this campus. It is such experiences that make saying goodbye to our respected professors, super supportive staff, and beloved friends so difficult. As we move on to the next chapter in our lives, with new challenges to face and new ideas to embrace, I would like to take with me HKUST’s can-do spirit and its endless encouragement to make a change in the world. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to my parents and professors. Your support and encouragement have been the key ingredients to my success. During this time at HKUST, I and my fellow graduates have had opportunities to work with people with the same interest, and to learn from passionate professors and industry professionals. We have also had exposure to core aspects of the Mechanical and Aeronautical fields, such as aircraft design and avionics technology.
