I also extend joyful greetings to graduates who are sharing the occasion with us virtually. Class of 2021, I congratulate you all on your achievements amid unprecedented times. The pandemic has not only tested our adaptability to change and uncertainty, but also served as a powerful wake-up call for all inhabitants of Planet Earth to come together to address a growing list of critical challenges, ranging from public health to climate change and environmental degradation. We are reminded, now more than ever, to learn, to invent, and to be open-minded. As global citizens, we need to take collective action in building a sustainable future that we commonly share, with an innovative spirit, sensitivity to equality, respect for diversity, empathy for the underprivileged, and do so with passion and determination. We are now immersed in a world filled with international and social divides, along with hard choices between growth and conservation, technological innovation versus individual rights and options, and the irony of open, abundant information challenging rational judgment. The education, training, and insights you received at HKUST have helped you lay a firm foundation from which you are now ready to inspire and engage with other people to truly contribute to the world. Embrace challenges, exercise discretion and independent judgment when faced with unforeseeable events in life. And always, remain resilient. Graduates, I am so very proud of you. It is my distinct honor and great pleasure to speak with you today, in celebration of the 2021 School of Science graduates. This year’s congregation holds a special meaning for all of us. Following a lengthy pandemicenforced confinement and last year’s virtual ceremony, it is immensely gratifying to share this happy occasion in person. And for the very first time, we hold our congregation in this brand new Shaw Auditorium, in the spirit of a commitment to creativity and scholarly interaction that this facility is intended to foster. Finally, this year’s congregation takes place as we begin our celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the founding of the University. My role today includes but one formal obligation which I herewith discharge: I offer you all my most heartfelt congratulations. All graduating classes of students have experienced their own challenges during their college career, but it is safe to say that the pandemic has made yours uniquely difficult. But nonetheless after what must seem like an interminable period of toil and drama you have arrived at this moment: the imminent conferral of that most important testament to your remarkable efforts: your diploma. Now I am confident that for many of you in the midst of your joy, and perhaps a certain amount of relief, at reaching this important juncture in your lives, you may be experiencing some trepidation regarding your future in a world that seems to be changing faster than we can adapt. With an uncertain economy, rising inequality, deteriorating international relations, a changing climate, and a pandemic that continues to affect our daily lives, a certain amount of anxiety may be understandable. But it is precisely under such difficult circumstances that you should remember this diploma that you receive today. It is a document bestowed on you not simply as a reward for your hard work; not simply in acknowledging your performance on exams and classroom assignments. And not even for your mastery of any of those wonderful areas of human creativity with which you have been engaged for the past four years and for which you are justly proud. Rather this diploma should more properly be thought of as a license; a validation that you may /practice/ those skills which are the true measure of your accomplishments from your years here: your ability to think critically about the world around you; to look, listen, and ask questions; to recognize that the world, with its myriad challenges and troubles, is fundamentally understandable through observation and reflection. And with this understanding, solutions will come, no matter how difficult or seemingly insurmountable these challenges may be. ADDRESS BY THE ACTING DEAN OF SCIENCE 7 Today’s ceremony is not merely a celebration of your accomplishments. More importantly it serves as both recognition and reminder: recognition of your profound ability to engage with the world and thereby make it better; and a reminder of your paramount obligation to do so. I stand here today with enormous pride in you and your accomplishments, and equally enormous hope and expectations for your future. As you embark on the next phases of your personal stories I wish you all health, happiness, and the greatest of success. 署理理學院院長講辭 高漢安教授 8 署理理學院院長講辭 各位同事、來賓、還有我們今天的主角，各位 畢業同學: 我非常高興和榮幸今天能跟大家一起慶祝理學院 2021年度的畢業典禮，為各位畢業生送上衷心的 祝賀。 今年的畢業典禮別具意義。因疫情的緣故，大家 都經歷了一段漫長日子，無法與親朋好友相聚， 而去年的畢業禮也只能安排在網上舉行，所以今 天能跟大家一起親身出席這個充滿喜悅的場合， 我感到萬份雀躍。與此同時，今年是大學首次於 這座新建成的逸夫演藝中心舉行畢業典禮，這座 籌備經年的新地標，象徵著大學對培育創意和學 術交流的理念與熱誠。適逢今年我們正慶祝科大 創校三十週年，更為這個畢業典禮添上多一層意 義。 我衷心祝賀每一位同學今天能順利畢業。相信在 大學生涯當中，所有同學都曾面對過種種的挑 戰，然而在抗疫的日子裏，要堅持不懈，完成學 業，可想而知定必困難重重。儘管如此，經過漫 長的艱辛及跌宕起伏的日子後，值得紀念的一刻 終於來臨，你們將獲頒授學位證書，這是你們多 年來付出努力的憑證。 我相信你們當中許多人，為踏入人生這重要一刻 而感到欣慰和如釋重負，同時亦因為身處這瞬息 萬變的世界而為自己的未來感到不安。面對經濟 的不明朗、日益加劇的不平等現象、國際間關係 的緊張、氣候變化，以及疫情持續對我們日常生 活的影響，我理解大家或多或少會感到一點焦 慮。 但正正在這種困難重重的情況下，你們更應該時 刻記起今天所獲頒的證書。這份證書不僅為了獎 勵你們所付出的努力，又或認同你們在考試、課 堂習作的表現，也不只是證明你們在大學四年間 成功掌握了那些彰顯人類創意的各個知識領域。 這些學術成果當然值得你們引以為傲，然而，這 學位證書更應該被視為一張許可證，代表你們 有能力實踐所學，透過觀察、聆聽及發問，對周 邊世界作出批判性思考，縱使世界充滿了各種挑 戰與問題，你們應該明白，通過不斷的觀察和反 思，我們還是能夠更深入了解這個世界，掌握問 題的核心。憑藉這份洞察力，無論這些挑戰看似 多麼困難，我們總能找到適切的解決方法。 署理理學院院長講辭 9 今天的畢業禮不單為慶祝你們學有所成，且更具 雙重意義：一方面肯定你們有能力為創建一個更 美好的世界出一分力，並讓你們銘記，要以發揮 所學貢獻社會為己任。 今天，我為你們所得的成就感到無比驕傲，同時 亦對你們的未來充滿希冀和期望。在你們開始撰 寫人生的下一章節的同時，我祝願大家健康、幸 福及前程錦繡。 10 ADDRESS BY GRADUATE REPRESENTATIVE Address by Graduate Representative Erfan SHEKARRIZ Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Cell Biology Distinguished guests, faculty members, my fellow graduates, ladies and gentlemen, I stand before you, a single story representative of a complex web of narratives present here in this hall and at HKUST. I arrived at this magical campus as a rather confused teenager. All teenage Erfan wanted to do was study Chemistry, swing away at the piano, and practice tennis. He is now “leaving” HKUST, one might even say less proficient at Chemistry, less virtuosic at playing the piano, and definitely not on top of his tennis game. But we must ALSO mention, Erfan is now a Biochemistry & Cellular Biology graduate, a Fashion Photographer, a startup founder, a tennis coach, a self-proclaimed poet, and an alleged Marine Environmental Scientist. He is only ONE fish in the pond. I encourage you all to close your eyes. Imagine the rich and diverse ocean that is HKUST, and all that happens within. We all share the same story: Even though most of us have made extreme attempts to avoid 9am classes, to avoid inconvenient midterm exams, and to avoid long queue lines at the LG7 canteen, one thing that we have failed to avoid is our fate. Our fate of where we were supposed to be, where we stand now, and where we will be next. Through rather strange times, HKUST has been the backbone of each of our spontaneous, serendipitous, and exciting journeys through the pedagogy, thrusting us into the workforce with newly acquired mindsets, skills, and stories. For this, we thank our faculty, families, and all labor staff on our Clear Water Bay campus that were the facilitators of our journey on this backbone. We thank the small moments of love, clarity, and the beautiful sense of community. And most importantly, we thank fate for what is to come next, for it will be spontaneous, serendipitous, and an exciting journey. 畢業生代表的講辭 11 畢業生代表講辭 Erfan SHEKARRIZ 理學士( 生物化學及細胞生物學) 各位嘉賓，教職員，畢業生，先生和女士： 我今天作為畢業生代表站在台前，所展述自己的 故事，亦只是禮堂內各位應屆畢業生的故事結集 中的「滄海一粟」。 當初我來到香港科技大學這個神奇的校園時，我 只是一個迷茫的小伙子，一心只想攻讀化學、彈 彈鋼琴、打打網球。現在這個「小伙子」要離開 科大了，相比當日, 他現在的化學知識不進反退， 琴藝亦生疏了，球技更絕對談不上登峰造極。但 不得不提，這個「小伙子」現在是一位生物化學 及細胞生物學的畢業生、時裝攝影師、初創企業 的創辦人、網球教練、自封的「詩人」、以及據 稱的「海洋環境科學家」。 不要忘記這「小伙子」只是池中的一尾魚。我鼓 勵各位合上眼睛，想像一下科技大學就如一片豐 饒多樣的汪洋，想像在這一片浩瀚之中湧現的所 有人和事。 事實上，我們都分享著相同的故事。即使我們大 部份人都用盡一切方法去逃避早上九時正的課 堂，逃避不願面對的期中考試，逃避校園飯堂的 長長人龍，但都無法逃避我們過去、現在、未來 的命運。 在這個有點非比尋常的時代，科大透過其教育成 為我們的主要骨幹, 支持著我們展開滿載自發性、 意外收獲和刺激的旅程，以全新裝備的思維、 技巧和經驗步入職場。為此，我們感謝各位教職 員、家人、以及清水灣校園的所有職工，你們促 成了這一切。我們亦感激所有充滿愛和令人感悟 的時光，以及美好的社區精神。最重要的是，我 們感謝命運為未來帶來的一切，因為未來將會是 一段滿載自發性、意外收獲和刺激的旅程。 12 ADDRESS BY GRADUATE REPRESENTATIVE Address by Graduate Representative IP Wang Hei Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Economics Professors, honoured guests and the Class of 2021 from Department of Mathematics, I am glad to see most of our classmates are finally not with the frustrated face as in your real analysis class. Before I start, I just want to acknowledge how incredible you all are for making it this far. The past few years have tested so many of us, and we have to muster up the enthusiasm, the strength, and the courage to finish getting our degree while the world was falling apart around us. But we did it, just like how we prove the proposition that we don’t even understand, challenging yet rewarding. And I also want to share this happiness and my wishes to people who are supposed to be here today but cannot make it for whatever reasons. When I was in my first year, I saw a huge banner hanging from the concourse ceiling, saying “Mathematics never lies”. And all of us here know that line itself was a lie. Math told us that they are useful but I bet at least half of you have forgotten what is triple integral. You might think you are overqualified for your Excel job. Yet, number theory was a pure art until its application to cryptography. Be prepared, be patient, keep learning, perfect your job. God rewards the diligent. During the next chapter of life, you might feel extremely exhausted just like you were in multivariable calculus’s midterm, or maybe even worse. Whenever these moments come, I just want to remind you that it is totally fine to stop for a while. Take a deep breath. Look around. People are with you. Once getting enough energy, insist what you truly believe, contribute to the culture, and make the community a better place. Lastly, cherish the friendship we have at UST. Congratulations to the math class of 2021. Thank you. 畢業生代表的講辭 13 畢業生代表講辭 葉泓希 理學士( 數學與經濟學) 各位教授、來賓、數學系應屆畢業生： 我很高興再看不到大家平時上實分析課時掛著那 副沮喪的面容。 在開始之前，我想告訴各位畢業生，大家能走到 這步實在很厲害。過去幾年對大部分人來說可說 是艱辛的考驗，我們要在這翻天覆地的世界咬緊 牙關，以熱誠、力量和勇氣完成學位。我們終於 成功了，這就像證明那些難以理解的命題，困難 但值得。我亦希望與那些本應在此，但因種種原 因無法前來的畢業生一同分享這份喜悅。 我在大一的時候看見學術廊天花板掛著一幅字 句，寫著「數學從不撒謊」，但相信在座各位都 知道那句話本身就是句謊言。眾所周知，數學是 很有用，但我敢打賭在座至少一半同學已忘記什 麼是三重積分。大家可能覺得要完成試算表工作 簡直是大才小用，但是，數論在應用於密碼學前 也只是純粹的藝術。請準備充足，保持耐心，認 真工作，天道酬勤。 在人生的下一個章節，你可能會感到極度疲憊， 就像身處多元微積分期中試的泥沼，甚至更差。 在這個時候，請緊記絕對不要停下腳步。深呼 吸、環看四周，我們一同前行。待大家儲滿能 量，定能堅持信念，貢獻文化，創造更好的社 會。 最後，讓我們珍惜科大造就的友誼。謹此祝賀各 位數學系應屆畢業生。謝謝。 14 ADDRESS BY GRADUATE REPRESENTATIVE Address by Graduate Representative LEUNG Shu Kiu Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science Good afternoon, honored guests, professors and fellow graduates of the class of 2021. To be honest, when I was asked to give this speech, my mind went blank as I struggled to come up with a story that summed up my time at HKUST. The first thing that popped up in my mind was the heavy workload in exams and assignments and how relieved I was to have finally gotten through all of that. So, I collected ideas from friends in our major. Some of them, like me, complained about the workloads. While the others reminded me that university wasn’t all about studying — it was about building connections, overcoming obstacles, and personal growth. They reminded me of the good old times when we had to pluck weeds in Wetland Park under the scorching sun as a part of the field trip course, as well as when we shared how tough yet rewarding our summer internships were. Looking back over these years, I realized how much I have grown. When I first declared as an Environmental Science major, I was insecure about my future. People would often scoff and say, “What can you do with this degree?” followed by “Not many people care about conservation.” After four years, I can confidently state that it is not true at all. I realized Hong Kong is full of diverse ecosystems with rich biodiversity, and there are people who care deeply about it. This program has given us numerous opportunities to connect with NGOs and the industry and has helped us gain a better understanding of what it takes to make a difference. All these experiences have ignited my passion and led to my decision to pursue further studies in this field. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to our dedicated professors and faculty staff for their unwavering support throughout our journeys. I would also like to thank my peers for being the kindest and funniest people I have ever had the pleasure of studying with. Congratulations, class of 2021, on reaching this major milestone. May we overcome any obstacles we encounter, and always remember how far we have come when we start questioning ourselves. Thank you all. 畢業生代表的講辭 15 畢業生代表講辭 梁紓喬 理學士( 環境科學) 午安，各位來賓、教授和2021年度應屆畢業生： 實不相瞞，當我獲邀在畢業禮上進行致詞時，我 的腦海瞬間變得一片空白。我嘗試以一段經歷為 我的大學生涯作一個總結，但腦海一閃而過的回 憶卻是當年繁重的學業，然而, 我對於自己能順利 完成學業感到如釋重負。在收集到的同學意見當 中，不少人都和我一樣抱怨科大的工作量，而亦 有同學提醒我，在大學生涯當中，比學業更重要 的是學懂如何建立人際關係、克服困難、以及我 們的個人成長。當刻，我不禁想起在實地考察中 與同學一起到濕地公園清理雜草的時光，還有和 他們分享暑期實習時的一點一滴。 回想當初修讀環境科學系時，我感到前途一片迷 茫。畢竟，身邊的人常向我灌輸「沒什麼人關心 生態保育」和「這個學系畢業後或許很難找到工 作」的概念。但四年過去，我不但獲得了許多與 環保團體交流的機會，還接觸了許多真正關心生 態的人，令我認識到香港豐富的生物多樣性原來 也不容小覷。種種的經歷激起了我對環境的熱 愛，更令我決意繼續進修相關課程。 最後，我很感謝海洋科學系的教職員一直以來的 支持，也很感謝我的同學，很幸運能與善良有趣 的你們一起學習和成長。各位畢業生，今天我們 終於實現了人生中一個重要的里程碑。希望我們 能克服任何障礙，並在質疑自己的時候謹記毋忘 初心。謝謝。 16 ADDRESS BY GRADUATE REPRESENTATIVE Address by Graduate Representative AU Wing Ying Bachelor of Science in Chemistry Guests, faculties and staffs, families, and fellow graduates, Today, it is my honor to celebrate this important milestone and share my pleasure with you in the intensity of emotions filling this auditorium. In the past few years, we went through highs and lows of our journey of academics, relationships, and self-discovery. We all had different experiences in the journey. Some of us made silly mistakes in the lab, while some aced the subject. Some spent the whole day in the library fighting deadlines, while some went on a hike or kayaking because they forgot about the deadlines. But still, we all made through those stressful days before the due dates. Throughout the journey, we have not only accumulated knowledge and achievements, but also precious memories that we created with our families, peers, and teachers. Looking back, we would not have become who we are today without the support from these amazing people who deserve the utmost appreciation. Here, I would like to present special thanks to my Capstone instructors as they have given me the opportunity to publish my first ever study which originated from my final year project. I really appreciate their effort, patience, and time who have led me to where I am today. I am now pursuing a postgraduate program in chemical pathology. Although the discipline is quite different from Chemistry, the critical thinking skill and lab techniques I acquired as an undergraduate have laid a foundation for me to conduct research in drug and vaccine development. This credit also goes to the university for providing excellent learning environment and resources. HKUST is our second home to flourish, to learn, and to explore ourselves and the world. Like in a reaction where particles come in together to form bonds, this place is where we collide and form new bonds between ourselves and the rest. What these bonds really mean may vary from person to person. They could be lifelong friendships, or opportunities to succeed. But one thing is certain that these bonds are beyond matters. They are unmeasurable, irreversible, and everlasting. As we set foot in the society, we will be facing challenges and adversity that come with the changes of the world. But there is one survival tip for you, that is to be courageous and dare to dream always! Congratulations class of 2021! 畢業生代表的講辭 17 畢業生代表講辭 歐詠盈 理學士( 化學) 各位嘉賓、老師、家屬和畢業生： 今天，我很榮幸能夠參與這個重要的人生里程 碑，並在這個洋溢着感動與不捨的禮堂裡和大家 分享我的喜悅。過去幾年，我們在學術、人際關 係和自我探索的旅程中經歷了高高低低。大家各 自的旅途都有着不同的故事。一些人在做實驗的 時候經常犯小錯誤，而另一些人則把這門課掌握 得淋漓盡致。有些人一整天在圖書館為習作的死 線奮鬥，而有些人則把死線拋去到九霄雲外而跑 去遠足或劃皮划艇。儘管如此，我們最終都熬過 了死線前那些精神緊繃的日子。在過去的學習生 涯，我們不僅積累了知識和成就，也創造了與家 人、同學、老師的珍貴回憶。回望過去，如果沒 有這些人的支持和鼓勵，就不會有今天的我們， 因此他們值得我們給予最真誠的謝意。 在這裡，我要特別感謝我的項目導師，因為他們 給予了我發表第一篇研究成果的機會。這項研究 是我畢業專題的延伸。我衷心感激各位導師的努 力、耐心和時間，是他們帶領我走到了今天。我 現正攻讀化學病理學的研究生課程。雖然這門學 科和化學不太一樣，但在本科期間培養出來的批 判性思維和實驗技巧都為我日後研發藥物和疫苗 奠定了基礎。當然，大學為我們提供卓越的學習 環境和豐富的教學資源也功不可抹。 香港科技大學是我們的第二個家，讓我們得以發 展、學習和探索自我與世界。就像粒子聚集在 一起形成鍵的反應一樣，這個地方讓我們彼此啟 發，在自我和他人之間建立起新的羈絆。這些羈 絆的含義因人而異，它們可以是終生的友誼，也 可以是成功的機會。但可以確定的是，這些羈絆 都在物質以外。它們是不可測量、不可逆轉和不 滅的。 我們即將踏入社會，挑戰和逆境將伴隨着世界的 變化迎面而來。但在這裡給你一個生存的秘訣， 那就是敢於前行、敢於夢想！ 恭喜所有二〇二一年畢業生！ 18 ADDRESS BY GRADUATE REPRESENTATIVE Address by Graduate Representative Lam Yin Hei Bachelor of Science in Physics Distinguished guests, proud parents, and above all, my fellow graduates, good afternoon. Surviving a four-year physics undergraduate programme is by no means an easy task, at least it is to me. The fact that each and every one of us is alive and well proves we have fought with valiance, glory, and dignity. Like the rest of you, I studied physics because I had a dream: a dream to pursue higher understanding, as well as to unravel the mysteries of our universe. However, it did not take long for the dream to start falling apart when it was valued by three alphabets: GPA. As my GPA fell into gravitational acceleration, so did my expectations in examinations. It is the norm for students to ask, “is it possible to score higher in exams”, whereas, for me and some of my mates, that question is the simpler, “is it possible to even score at all”. During the pursuit of advanced knowledge, frustration and exhaustion became our best friends. But thanks to them, I discovered that it is not our fear for obligations that propels us, rather it is our dream. Physics is hard, but so will be our future. Challenges are bound to suffocate us regardless of where we are and who we are. It sounds only absurd to dream when in distress, for sure. But truthfully, to dream is to restore faith in ourselves and reinforce our minds to overcome the matter. Relinquishing the right to dream is to forfeit purpose in what we do and what we have strived for. I think I ought to conclude less philosophically. The last four years have indeed been imperfect due to a series of inevitable events, Covid, for instance. However, it is the imperfection that allowed us to cherish the moments we shared more than ever. Though I would have loved to express so much more during this special occasion, I think it is the best that I end my speech with an old school verse – “We made it!
