2021 Annual Newsletter Issue 4 SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE DEAN’S MESSAGE We are also delighted by the successful recruitment of the new Division Head of Humanities, Professor Steven Miles and 19 other faculty. Nearly all of them relocated from across the globe — and endured lengthy quarantines with their families—to join our faculty. We have much to anticipate in the coming year, including the first live production of a musical since 2018; the opening of the Shaw Auditorium, which coincides with the celebration of HKUST’s 30th Anniversary; and a new initiative to build capacity in AI ethics and governance. I look forward to seeing all of you in person as the campus resumes in-person classes and various events. Kellee S. While some social distancing measures remained in place during the 2020-21 academic year, we were able to introduce a range of new initiatives thanks to the remarkable energy and creativity of our faculty and staff. SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE STUDENT PUBLIC POLICY CASE COMPETITION The second session of the HKUST Inter-University Public Policy Case Competition was held on 1 April and 17 April 2021. Co-hosted by SHSS’s Division of Social Science, the Division of Public Policy, and the Institute for Public Policy, the Case Competition attracted 200 student participants from 6 higher education institutions in Hong Kong. Three teams of our GCS and QSA students advanced to the semi-final, with the INNOSIGHT team winning the first runner-up title and the G4 team winning the third runner-up title. Heartfelt congratulations on their excellent achievements!

THE FRENCH CENTRE FOR RESEARCH ON CONTEMPORARY CHINA (CEFC) 法國現代中國研究中心

The French Centre for Research on Contemporary China (CEFC) is a publicly funded research institute, supported by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the CNRS. Established in 1991, the Centre is based in Hong Kong, with a branch office in Taipei since 1994. The CEFC publishes China Perspectives, an SSCI interdisciplinary academic journal, established in 1995, which focuses on the political, social, economic and cultural evolutions of contemporary China (PRC, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan).
