Today is an important day in your lives: we celebrate your achievements at HKUST; equally important, on behalf of all my colleagues, I wish you success and happiness as you embark on a new journey. You have demonstrated that with devoted efforts, you can make marvelous things happen! In our short history, many of our graduates have improved the way we live and become an industry game-changer in their own unique ways. DJI drones, Yunzhou unmanned vessels, RHT Industries air purifiers, HKJEBN food products, and Madhead mobile games are just some of the examples of how our alumni benefit people around the world. Many are still leading the way in their areas of expertise to contribute to society, be it bankers, entrepreneurs, teachers, or family carers. While taking pride in seeing your personal advancement, I sincerely wish we all would bear in mind that we are life time members of the HKUST family. 4 I PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS BY PROFESSOR WEI SHYY In the present era, the advancement of science and technology has created a huge, positive impact on our lives; it has also caused global problems such as inequality in wealth distribution, sustainability of the globe, and social mobility of citizens. The persistent divide between the classes of 'haves' and 'havenots' can't be accepted and tolerated. We count on you to make a difference, and I am confident that you can find solutions to combat these challenges in whatever role you choose to play in the future. As you leave Clear Water Bay, I hope we will continue to stay in touch. We treasure our shared experiences while you were here. The students after you would appreciate seeing and learning from you because what you have done and will be going through will provide invaluable insights and encouragement to them. I bid you farewell as you are set to fly out and climb new heights. While you are airborne, don't forget to listen to your heart. HKUST, your alma mater, will always be here to cheer for you during the ups and downs in your life! Dr. Cheng is Chairman and Executive Director of mega property developer New World Development Company Limited and international giant jewellery retailer Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group. Along with these flagship businesses, he heads a vast family conglomerate, encompassing property development, infrastructure and services, retail, hotels and serviced apartments. When you play a core role in steering some of Hong Kong's most prominent companies over the past 40 years, it might seem easy to become immersed solely in balance sheets and profits. Instead, guided by the Confucian 'doctrine of the mean', Dr. Cheng has kept people at the forefront of his concerns. He has striven to promote harmony, balance, and mutual benefit in the commercial world, viewing such behavior as essential to look after the interests of the tens of thousands of people who form the New World/ Chow Tai Fook family. Dr. Cheng, the eldest son of the late entrepreneur Dr. Cheng Yu Tung, has an exceptional background - he was born in a village in Mainland China, raised in urban Hong Kong, and educated at a 6 I HONORARY DEGREE CITATIONS Canadian university. All these experiences join together and give him a head start in weighing up different perspectives. After graduating from the Ivey Business School with a degree in Business Administration and an MBA in the early 1970s, he returned to Hong Kong to join the family enterprise. Equipped with education, philosophy, insights, and the brave spirit of a true entrepreneur, Dr. Cheng has played a key role in diversification, driving the expansion of New World from property development to infrastructure, transportation, hospitality services, retail, healthcare, education, technology, energy and environmental services. As a forward-looking entrepreneur, Dr. Cheng managed to propel New World forward which became one of the earliest and the most widereaching Hong Kong property developers in Mainland China. There, they have built modern residential complexes in large as well as smaller cities, along with highways, hotels, and shopping malls, advancing urban development and the consumer economy across the country. Since the 2011 listing of the Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group on the Hong Kong Stock Market, Dr. Cheng has nurtured the chain's rapid expansion to more than 2,000 stores in Greater China and overseen its move into e-commerce. In 2012, he took the helm of the business realm overall following the retirement of his father. Dr. Cheng's nurturing of young hopes and dreams extends well beyond the family circle, with education viewed as a crucial foundation for leadership development. The New World Mathematics Awards, set up by Dr. Cheng and Fields Medal winner Prof. Yau Shing Tung in 2007 to encourage top students of Chinese descent, are one of many initiatives sponsored by the New World Group over the years. Meanwhile, initial funding from Dr. Cheng to support the launch of the Wu Zhi Qiao (Bridge to China) Charitable Foundation has enabled professionals, volunteers, and university students, including those at HKUST, to build scores of bridges in poorer parts of the country in the past decade. Provision of the right environment to study and boost discovery has been another educational focus through generous large-scale donations to boost facilities at local universities and beyond. HKUST has been a major beneficiary. In 2016, the University celebrated the opening of the eightstory state-of-the-art Cheng Yu Tung Building for teaching and research, following a gift from the Cheng Yu Tung Foundation. A recent donation from the Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation will support the University's exploration into the escalating global scourge of Alzheimer's disease. In addition, Dr. Cheng himself has assisted HKUST's development through a decade of advisory input as a member of the University Court and now an Honorary Court member. Among other influential civic commitments, Dr. Cheng was a Standing Committee Member of the Twelfth Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and an initiator of the Better Hong Kong Foundation in 199 5 to foster dialogue between Hong Kong, Mainland China, and internationally. In recognition of his many contributions to education and the community, Dr. Cheng received a Gold Bauhinia Star in 2001 and the Grand Bauhinia Medal in 2017 from the Hong Kong government. He was awarded the Legion d'Honneur by the French government in 2005. Embracing a vision of trust in others, continuous listening and learning, and social concern is not an easy path to take in an ultra-competitive, fast-changing business environment and at the forefront of the global commercial world. But the impact of such leadership can certainly be immense, as Dr. Cheng has ably shown for more than 40 years, guiding and improving lives not only here and now but for the generations to come. DWECK Citation 'In our DNA' has become a hugely popular way to categorize the identity or nature of people, companies, and even products: encoded, predetermined, and permanent. To Prof. Carol S. DWECK, the danger lies in associating DNA with destiny when it comes to how we think about talent and achievement. As the formulator of the 'growth mindset', the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford University has put forward an alternative concept centered on elasticity in personal and intellectual abilities. From ground-breaking academic publications and a 2006 popular science book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success - translated into 25 languages, and still a best-seller - to her on-going research and advocacy, she has challenged our implicit views of what it means to succeed. In doing so, she has revolutionized theories on personality, motivation and development over the past 40 years and seen her approach take root globally in fields from education and business management to sport. Through systematic research and experiments, Prof. Dweck found two major self-conceptions at work in children and adults. Those who viewed intelligence as innately determined and fixed often gave up quickly or took avoidance actions when faced with obstacles. Why? Their 'fixed mindset' registered failure as a lack of ability and a dreaded challenge to their self-esteem. By contrast, those 10 I HONORARY DEGREE CITATIONS who believed intelligence could be developed, viewed failure as a route to learning, and were more willing to test themselves in novel settings. They showed greater persistence and effort, and attained more positive outcomes. Equally significant, from the hundreds of studies with thousands of people conducted by Prof. Dweck, her students, and colleagues, it was shown that a 'growth mindset' could itself be developed and expanded by educational strategies and input from parents, teachers, work supervisors, and others. It seems fitting that such insight began with a metamorphic occurrence. As a sixth-grade school student in the US in the 1950s, Prof. Dweck's form teacher arranged her class of highachievers in order of IQ. She also rewarded those with high scores by allocating them classroom responsibilities, such as cleaning the blackboard. The young Carol was placed in row one, number one. However, rather than instilling a lasting fixed mindset from such emphasis on intelligence, in her case it ultimately proved a 'growth' turning point in her interest in the links between mindsets, IQ, and achievement. Undertaking her bachelor degree in psychology at Barnard College, a liberal arts school in New York, amid the hope and empowerment of the mid- 1960s led to further mind stretching. President John Kennedy's assassination, Martin Luther King's drive for civil rights, the Vietnam War, Betty Friedan and feminism, and the emergence of pop culture icon Bob Dylan were among the events having a transformational social impact. By the end of her undergraduate years, she 'wasn't afraid to open new doors ... and step through those doors'. She graduated in 1967 and attained her PhD at Yale University in 1972. Research and teaching at the University of Illinois, Harvard, and Columbia followed, ahead of her current role at Stanford. Prof. Dweck's life-changing body of work has now generated 90,000 citations, according to Google Scholar. Her research has been included in the World Development Report 201 S and the World Bank's Global Insights Initiative has recommended its use. Companies have sought out Prof. Dweck to examine the dynamics of organizational mindsets and her TEDx talk, posted online in 2014, has been viewed over eight million times. In Hong Kong, the English Schools Foundation has adopted the growth mindset as part of their pedagogical philosophy. At HKUST, the School of Business and Management has recently introduced such insights to all freshmen and researchers at the School are further exploring this area. Recognized by her peers, Prof. Dweck is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, US National Academy of Sciences, and is the recipient of 10 lifetime achievement awards. Last year, she became one of two inaugural laureates of the prestigious US$3.9 million Yidan Prize for Education Research, based in Hong Kong and founded by Tencent core founder Charles Chen Yidan. The judging panel was headed by HKUST's President Emeritus Prof. Paul Chu. So next time someone says 'not yet' rather than 'you failed' or praises effort rather than intelligence, you will know why. Indeed, it may be you uttering this or tackling a difficult challenge with relish. Exactly the reason why we celebrate today the endeavor, persistence, and dedication of Prof. Dweck in opening up a global pathway to unlock fuller potential and achievement. Dweck 0 錄譽博士的辦︱ 13 Doctor of Letters honoris causa Mr. Martin TANG Yue-Nien Citation Pinpointing the right person for the job at the apex of an enterprise is a crucial task. It has the potential to change the nature of an industry or institution, launch a global trend, and impact the opportunities of millions of people. Imagine how this talent for top talent-spotting could be harnessed to help a university, as Mr. Martin TANG Yue-Nien has done, as former Vice-Chairman and Acting Chairman of the HKUST Council. Yet Mr. Tang's career path could have been so very different. As the only son of cotton spinning and garment business magnate Dr. Jack TANG ChiChien, the young Martin was always expected to go into the textile industry. Higher education in the US in the mid-1960s and early 1970s set the scene: first, in electrical engineering at Cornell University; and later a master of science at MIT Sloan School of Management. Four years in finance at Bank of America in the US and Taiwan followed, before joining the family firm. Starting from the bottom with a challenging posting to Indonesia, Mr. Tang worked diligently but couldn't shake the feeling that manufacturing just wasn't right for him. Then, in the mid-1980s, he left the family business for Techno-Ventures Hong Kong Ltd, the city's first structured venture capital fund management firm, where he was introduced to the executive search world while locating key personnel, and was eventually headhunted himself. 14 I HONORARY DEGREE CITATIONS When Mr. Tang joined human capital consultancy Norman Broadbent in 1988, he soon knew he had found his passion. He loved the travel and talking to clients and potential candidates from a vast array of industries. Four years later, he switched to Spencer Stuart & Associates, a global giant. Over the next 16 years, he built up the company in Asia from a struggling branch in Hong Kong to a regional powerhouse, establishing offices in Shanghai, Beijing and Singapore and spending a decade as Chairman, Asia and a board member of the parent company in the USA. During his time in executive search, Mr. Tang located CEOs, CFOs, and many other senior executives in areas as diverse as private equity and government-related bodies, chemicals and consumer goods. The education sector was another repeat client. He was involved in searches for five of the eight University Grants Committee institutions. Given this distinctive combination of wideranging business trends, insights into evolving marketplace needs, and understanding of the university environment, Mr. Tang was also a great fit to assist governance of the higher education sector. Recognized as such by the Hong Kong government, he has enthusiastically undertaken public service appointments over a span of 25 years for HKUST and the University Grants Committee. Motivation for such contribution lies in his belief that education is the real key to the advancement of human goals, such as peace and the development of young people who truly care about our planet's future; and his wish to follow US philanthropist Charles Feeney's generositydriven philosophy of 'giving while living'. Mr. Tang first joined the HKUST Council in 1993, just two years after the University's establishment. He strengthened appointment-related procedures as chair of the recruitment committee, a vital job in a fledgling university that viewed 'first-class people' as its greatest asset. After membership of the University Court (1999- 2003), Mr. Tang returned to the Council as ViceChairman from 2013-2015. In this capacity and as chair of the human resources committee, he worked tirelessly to facilitate University senior management in turning the challenge of shifting from a 3-year to a 4-year undergraduate curriculum structure into an opportunity to keep HKUST's graduates among the world's best. As in the wider world, good governance and greater transparency were also on the Council's agenda, with the introduction of key performance indicators and annual operating plans at HKUST. Invaluably, in 2014, Mr. Tang stepped up as Acting Chairman after the untimely demise of Chairman Dr. Marvin Cheung. Today, he maintains his ties as an Advisory Board member for the Institute for Public Policy. Mr. Tang's dedication to assisting others and fascination for myriad sectors also led to numerous directorships of public, private, and not-for-profit organizations. In addition, he has proved an exemplary alumnus, giving back continuously to his own two US alma maters through bringing together fellow alumni, presiding over alumni organizations, forging bonds east and west, as well as donations. It has certainly been a full-contribution journey. From the ripple effect of apt leadership placement to all-round support for education to develop the frontrunners of tomorrow, Mr. Tang has sought to use his strengths where they could best be applied. We are thus proud to recognize today Mr. Tang's inspiring determination to make a difference in many different ways to our University and multiple others far beyond. There's one more thing to celebrate today: it's finally Friday! Someone once said: 'Youth is like a long weekend on Friday night'. Our youth flies away in just the blink of an eye, but there are colorful moments that we will never forget. Spending four years of my youth as a business student at HKUST, I feel tremendously proud, even though the journey has not been easy. Adapting to new social circles was a great challenge. Although I enjoyed meeting all the beautiful souls and the nights I spent chatting with my classmates during my studies, there were times that I actually felt overwhelmed. Looking back, my university experience helped me build connections and gave me the courage to step out of my comfort zone. 18 I ADDRESS BY THE GRADUATE REPRESENTATIVE Heavy schoolwork was sometimes a burden for me; and I would never forget how my hands were shaking when I was about to give my presentation. In one semester, we were required to practice negotiation skills with our peers whom we had never met before on a weekly basis. Negotiations would sometimes lead to arguments due to cultural differences. We overcame those hardships, and the experiences made us stronger.
