 sENG SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING I DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING AND DECISION ANALYTICS Special Edition for IEDA Inauguration Ceremony IEDA Newsletter ISSUE No. 27 (Jan 2018) THE HONG KONG UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Brand New Direction for IE Department The IE Department will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2018. At this very special mark of a quarter of a century, I am very pleased to announce that on January 5 2018, the Department will be renamed as the Department of Industrial Engineering and Decision Analytics (IEDA). The new name reflects the emphasis of the department on both predictive and prescriptive analytics, as well as a broader scope on domain specific areas including demand and supply analytics, health care analytics, financial engineering and risk management, and logistics and engineering management. A new undergraduate (UG) program called Decision Analytics (DA) will be launched in the Fall Term 2018, subject to the final approval. Decision analytics places greater emphasis on using data to drive decision making models. By using statistical models, machine learning algorithms, simulation, creative modeling, prescriptive analytic tools, and domain specific knowledge, graduates will be better able to source high-value added jobs in banks, insurance companies, consulting firms, e-commerce, the travel and leisure industry, health-care organizations, in addition to working on complex issues arising in advanced manufacturing processes that also require decision analytics. The two existing UG programs will be combined into one under the name Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management. This program will share some of the core courses with Decision Analytics and will benefit from courses that are more in line with the modern economy. Graduates from this program will acquire more transferable skills enabling them to direct their energies towards the services, logistics and manufacturing sectors, especially focusing on jobs related to scheduling, systems design, operations planning, quality management and performance analysis. The names of the postgraduate (RPG) programs will be updated to MPhil and PhD in IEDA to reflect the new name of the department. We believe that decision analytics will be increasingly relevant in the 21st Century. Looking forward, we are committed to providing an excellent, broad and inclusive education for our students, making IEDA a world recognized department where graduates excel at having a positive impact in solving important societal problems.
