I was immediately struck by the environmental beauty of HKUST and became aware of the critical role that Student Housing and Residential Life plays on this unique campus. Living on this campus is a privilege and a rare opportunity that each of us, fortunate enough to spend a year or more in University housing, should make the most of. lfwe think of our University housing only as a 'dorm' or a 'bed space' that makes our lives more convenient, we are missing what is most important about living on this campus. Life in a University Hall affords you the opportunity to meet new people, more actively participate in campus life, while balancing your co-curricular activities with your academic pursuits. The precious time you spend living on campus will be one of the most important times of your life. If you don't spend quality time interacting with students from other parts of the world and from the various corners of Hong Kong, you will have squandered a once in a lifetime opportunity. How lucky we are to live and study at a University that is world renowned for its distinguished faculty and highly diverse student body! In order to provide all students with the truly life-changing opportunity to live at least one full year on our campus, the University is dedicated to rolling out a One-Year Housing pledge to all newly admitted Year 1 students - in the very near future. The First Year of study at the University is a critical time when many students engage in exploration, step outside of their comfort zone (sometimes for the first time in their life), make new friends, learn new ways of thinking about the world around them, and take a more independent approach to life's important challenges and decisions. Freshman year is an ideal time to live an entire year on campus, making lifelong friends outside of the classroom and meeting professors in the informal settings provided in the Residence Hall. Every Year 1 student will have the opportunity to live in a Hall with a Residence Master, a distinguished HKUST professor who is eager to meet and talk with each and every student living in the Hall. The Residence Master will work with the residence staff and student leaders to create a warm and friendly environment that is enlivened by quality co-curricular programs and opportunities. In 2017-18, we are excited to offer First-Year Residential Life Programs in the Residence Halls. Incoming students may elect to join one of the pilot programs. They will live together with a student leader (SUG) and a small group of other first-year students. Together the FYRLP groups will explore co-curricular opportunities together and spend time reflecting, relaxing, and sharing the exciting experiences of personal growth during the first year at the University. Participants completed three questionnaires in the beginning, at the second week, and at the end of the program to track their progress and stress level. We are thrilled to know that their stress level was lowered. Most of them also noticed improvements in flexibility, strength and balance. Before the Progran1 Begins ... Study is the most common origin of stress, followed by health. Half of the participants admitted that they are stressed. Only one-third have no stress symptoms. One-fourth do not feel physically healthy and wish to enhance their fitness through the program. At the end of the Program ... 96% feel calm and relaxed after each class. 80% of the participants agree that yoga helps stress relief. Half of them agree that yoga enhances their flexibility, strength, and balance. Participants managed to made friends with those who are passionate about yoga and healthy living. Internationalization Program Hall Language Buddy Program 2016 / 17 Participants of Hall Language Buddy Program (HLBP) were from all over the world; Germany, Korea, Indonesia, America, France, you name it ... Together they have created a semester filled with cultural and language exchange. Senior students and incoming exchange-in students, namely Mentors and Buddies respectively, have joined a series of activities organized by Student Housing and Residential Life Office (SHRL) to experience different cultures. They were also given chances to organize their own activities which were sponsored by SHRL. The self-initiated activities all showed a strong sense of local culture. Some of the groups went on to explore the old Hong Kong while some of the groups explored the country side of the city. Lantau Island, Cheung Chau, Central District, Yue Shue Wan and Lamma Island were some of the many places that they have set foot on. They have dwelled into the indigenous way of living in the most enjoyable manner. Below are some of their thoughts about the selfinitiated activities. ((We learned a lot of cultural aspects of Hong Kong) both in traditional and modem way. Hong Kong Floating Jumbo Restaurant has a very traditional architecture the way we view it from the boat) once we get into the restaurant it shows rather modem interior. It is very interesting to know that Hong Kong is preserving the traditional culture without suspending modernization.)) - WIJAYA Ghosananda (Indonesia) ((It was a great travel experience to explore more about Hong Kong and make friends with other buddies in my team. I shared my Zif e in Taiwan and got to know more about Spain and Italy from the others. I fully enjoyed this wonderful cultural collision.)) - YANG, Hunghsiang (Taiwan) ((This activity was really an amazing and unique experience for me since I never had visited Lantau Island before. Moreover) I was in charge of planning the whole trip which made the whole experience more memorable for me. Curiosity Program A r-e.co-tM1t of act'w(t'IM:' by Cur~ Pr-og,ra.tt11 13 y Vcu\lel] ohvv WRAY Since I arrived at UST, I've been taking advantage of every opportunity I get to attend the different events organised by the SHRLO. On November 2nd, I attended the 'Nights to Meet You' dinner; an evening of cultural exchange and brazenly gorging on buffet food. I was a student helper, leading my table and encouraging conversation. I had never been to the Conference Lodge before and I was impressed by the elegant decor and enticing buffet. I had one plate of regular food and then three plates of dessert. No shame. Later on, I was interviewed on stage about my experience as an exchange student! Overall it was a very interesting evening; I greatly enjoyed talking to fellow students from all over the world and learning more about their cultures. Later on November 9th, I attended a very different event; the 'Airsoft Shooting Fun Night'. The airsoft pistols we used were heavy, powerful and very realistic; I learned a lot about how to safely operate and accurately aim a firearm. We then completed a series of exciting time-trial shooting courses. I got a little bit carried away and scored some decent times. Being Northern Irish, this lead to the others referring to me as 'Liam Neeson' and making Taken jokes all night. It was honestly really fun; I felt like I was in a movie! I definitely recommend it. Eco-Awareness Program Green Trekker- VEGGIETASTIC 2016 In recent years, plant-based diet as an environmentally friendly, healthy and fashionable way of life, is gradually becoming a popular lifestyle in Hong Kong. In 2016, Hong Kong has earned the number six spot on PETA's list of the Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Cities in Asia. To promote a healthy and environmental friendly eating habit in our University, Green Trekker has invited Green Monday to bring this vegetarian trend into HKUST in 2016. VEGGIETASTIC is one of the largest events of Green Trekker. It is a joyful festival includes a series of activities including Green Cooking Classes, Green Cooking Competitions, Vegetable Bouquet Workshop & etc. In the launching ceremony, we are honoured to invite Executive Director of Green Monday, Ms Janis Chan, to share her personal experience on plant-based diet for many years. Green Trekker provided an opportunity for participants to experience the smoothie ride and taste different vegetarian food samples provided by Green Monday. We hope our events can change the fixed ideas on plant-based food of some people, and let them realize that veggie food can also be diverse and delicious. Ms Janis Chan was sharing her experience as a vegetarian for many years. Smoothie ride ·was a popular activity in the launching ceremony. As an important activity, the Green Cooking Class was welcomed by hall residents of different culture background. Under the instruction, participants were able to cook tasty Vegan Laksa and Tortilla with Honey Mustard Sauce which are easy for our residents in halls. The cooking class gave residents both an understanding about good taste and good nutrition of plant-based diet and practical ways to apply their experiences to form good, lifelong eating habits. Of course, you can also make a lot of new friends in such occasion. Participants were learning to cook Vegan Laksa in Green Cooking Class. The Green Cooking Competition was held on 22 Nov, 2016 when VEGGIETASTIC reached its climax. Total 8 teams have attended the finale. Participants showed their talents in cooking and prepared appetizing dishes from different culture background. Finally, an Indonesian dish, N asi U duk cooked by Team Rinaldi and Mika won the champion of the competition. Sports Program Sports - Inter-hall Dodgeball Competition In collaboration with the Dodgeball Club of HKUST, a SHRL Inter-hall Dodgeball Competition was held throughout October 2016 and was concluded with a final round in the S. H. Ho Sports Hall on 30 October 2016. Teams from different UG Halls engaged in fierce battle on the dodgeball court and the competition was won by the SHRL Team, a team composed of residents from UG Halls I, II and VII with several staff members from SHRLO. Teams representing UG Hall III and UG Hall V came in as second and third for the competition respectively. We interviewed one of the star player in the competition and the captain of the SHRL Team, Kevin Young, for his thoughts on playing in this brand new sports event. (S: SHRL; K: Kevin) S: Thank you for conducting this interview with us! Can you tell us a little aboutyourbackground? K: I am an exchange student from US and studied in the business school here at HKUST. I am from UG Hall II. S: You played dodgeball for your college back in US, right? How is it different for playing dodgeball here compared to it? K: Yes, I am a member of the dodgeball team for my college in US. The game rules we played over there are different, but the basic principles are more or less similar. Dodgeball is still 'quite a new sports for people in HKUST, so the level of competition is a bit different here. S: Overall, how do you feel about the dodgeball competition? Do you think more sports events should be organized for hall residents? K: Definitely. The game was fun and I treasured the chance to meet with fellow students that came from different background, especially those local students who are also very good in playing sports. I think some competition playing the more 'traditional' sports like soccer and basketball will also be awesome for hall residents. Meanwhile, we have also chatted with Kian Cheung, chairperson of HKUST Dodgeball Club, to learn more about the development of the sport in HKUST. The interview was conducted while our HKUST Dodgeball Team was participating in an Inter-University Dodgeball game that held in the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). Other participating institutes included HKBU, the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hang Seng Management College (HSMC) and others. S: We just saw a wonderful match between HKUST and HSMC which ended in a narrow loss for us. How do you feel about your team's performance? K: It was a good match and a very valuable experience for us even it ended with a defeat. As a new team, we have to learn and reflect through competitive matches like this one and grow as a whole. S: Do you think dodgeball can be a popular sports in HKUST? K: Certainly yes. Dodgeball is a simple yet competitive sports which involves a lot of strategic tactics and skills. The game has much less body contact when compared to soccer and basketball which should be an appeal to beginners. It will be great if more dodgeball competition can be organized for hall residents and let them experience the fun of playing it! Hall I Activities Review Hall I hosted its very first Pumpkin Carving Contest to celebrate Halloween this year. We carved a variety of vegetables including traditional pumpkins and also Chinese winter melons. We displayed these creative candle lit carvings at Front Garden for all Hl<UST students to enjoy. The carving of vegetables has been a common artistic practice by humans for nearly 10,000 years. The association between Halloween and pumpkin carvings did not happen until much later when the famous American writer Washington Irvine published his ghostly short story entitled 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow'. This story depicted a headless horseman with a pumpkin in the place of his sever head. The story was widely popular and became an integral part of American folklore. Every Halloween since, American families have been carving pumpkins to celebrate. It was our goal this year to bring this wonderful American tradition to Hl<UST. This was our first year to host the event. We hope to continue this great tradition for many years to come. Hall II Activities Review The Education Team of UG Hall II has organized and held Art Jamming workshop in November 2016. It was an activity where participants can draw their own paintings on a canvas. I participated as an organizer as well as a participant. Instructors from Chaco L'Art studio have brought all equipment needed for painting, such as canvas, easels, colors, and brushes. They also brought some sample paintings for references. We could either select a sample painting we want to draw or create our own paintings. I selected a landscape sample having beautiful sunset behind woods. Honestly, I am not a big fan of painting and it is not something I enjoy to do. So, before I started drawing, I was a little worried that I could do well because it had been so long since I drew something. But, I found myself really enjoying the drawing and having a lot of fun. Even though I was stuck in drawing some complicated part, the instructors helped me figure out a way to deal with it. I was able to concentrate only on my painting without thinking anything else in my head. It was really helpful for relieving stress. It was a great opportunity to do something that I had forgotten for a long time. Most importantly, it was not a hard activity like I worried at all. Rather, it was much fun and rewarding because I could see my painting in the end. Similar painting workshop will be running in the Spring Term. Stay tuned and keep checking the email we send to you. Written by l<IM Mijung, Hall Tutor of Hall II Hall III Activities Review The amazing tour to the Hong Kong Global Geopark By Dennis Chan, Hall Tutor of Hall Ill What is better than hiking in a sunny but cool late-Autumn day? The answer is advancing into the United Nations-recognized Global Geopark, exploring the gallant sea cave and the world's largest hexagonal rock columns with the guided tour conducted by Mr. Frankie from a Sai l<ung based Eco-tourist NGO! On 5 November 2016, UG Hall Ill organized the Geopark adventure tour to the High Island Region. On the way to the destination, the participants are already amazed by the superb panorama of the high island: the reservoir in Sapphire, the shallows in Cobalt and the sky in crystal blue. Frankie told the story about the land --- Sai l<ung is in fact being 'produced' during a Supervolcano eruption 140 Million years ago (when Dinosaurs were still there!) and the iconic hexagonal rock columns are the heritage of the eruption. When we arrived at the East dam, the participants can't wait to capture all the spectacular views. As we walked through the region we are introduced to all sorts of knowledge regarding the high island reservoir and the Geopark. On the dam we learnt about the history of water rationing and reservoir construction projects during 1960s. We also appreciated the designing features of the reservoir such as the breakwater with the iconic double-T shaped concretes. Descending to the sea level, we encountered the protagonists of the day. The giant sea cave and the Po Pin Chau illustrated the invincible power of coastal erosion process, where it transformed a cliff to a cave, then to an arc and finally created a separated island. The hexagonal rock columns revealed the earth-shaping mechanisms of volcano activities as we understood how the beautiful physics of lava cooling determined the shape of the rock columns. Appreciating the nature surrounding us is an indispensable element in achieving 'Green Living', the theme of UG Hall Ill. With deeper understand of the physical environment, the residents would be more aware of their impacts to the environment and the importance of natural conservation. Hall IV Activities Review Hall IV Indoor Rock Climbing - Stepping out from the comfort zone By Frieda Ko, SUG Mentor of Hall JV Hall IV organized an indoor rock climbing event on 22 Oct. For most people, rock climbing is a physically and mentally demanding sport. It seemed very challenging for me at first as I am afraid of height. However, I thought it was the time for me to get out of my comfort zone and to be brave. The accomplishment of conquering the first route made me kept trying new routes. It was an unforgettable experience. If I did not take the first step, I would never know that rock climbing can be so much fun. It boosted my self-confidence and helped me to reduce stress during the midterm period. I was so glad to make a lot of new friends who lives in the same hall. Keys for enriching hall life experience- 'Four Cs' Caring, Communication, Compromise, Comfortable Hall can be a platform for residents to learn and to appreciate diversity. In order to collect view and suggestion from residents on ways to improve the condition of hall facilities in UG Hall V, a hall forum was held on 20 October 2016 in the Conference Lodge at the LSI< Campus. All hall V residents were invited to contribute for the forum by presenting their ideas on how to renovate our hall from top to bottom. In the end, six different groups of residents participated in the event and presented us their vision on how a new UG Hall V should look like. While most of them agreed that works have to be done for sanitary facilities, some participants suggested innovative ways to increase storage spaced in bedrooms which would help residents to better utilize the limited space available in UG Hall V. The hall forum was a good platform for the hall management to communicate with students and keep ourselves connected on important issues of the hall. Dinner Hall VI Activities Review Hall 6- Get yourself move with Fitness Connection! Fitness Connection is one of the Living Learning Communities (LLC} themes launched at UG Hall VI. It is a vibrant community connecting all outgoing residents with different kinds of sports and fun. In the past semester, Fitness Connection Organizing Committee (OC} has held series of exciting activities for UG VI residents to leave aside stress and get their bodies move! An orientation camp was held in early September to kick-start the new academic semester. Mass games and sports like kin-ball, Frisbee and Tai Chi were played and they had an outdoor training program in the next day. Through playing novel sports games together, all members have enjoyed a wonderful weekend and a refreshing start of the semester. The camp was also a great chance for members to make new friends with each other in the community. Exciting events continued In October and November. We can never miss outdoor activities in the season of fall. Fitness members went on hiking at Long Ke Wan as a mid-term break. While enjoying the breath-taking scenery of Reservoir and Sai Kung, they had so much fun in the unspoiled beach throughout the afternoon. A cycling trip was held shortly after the hike, riding from Tai Wai to Tai Mei Tuk, which is a popular cycling route with scenic landscape. They had a barbecue gathering at the destination afterwards. What a fresh and relaxing day! Fun indoor events like visit to Trampoline Park and Laser Tag war game have brought more residents together to enjoy a great night after class. Thanks to the hard work of the OC, Fitness Connection has created a healthy and enjoyable residential life for their members and UG Hall VI residents throughout the semester. With a new group of OC taking lead in the new semester, may their work continue and further enhance the residential experience for their fellow hallmates in the future. We had completed the training program in the Orientation Camp and it was SO MUCH FUN! Barbeque after the cycling trip. Our Residence Master ·was with us tool Enjoy jumping and flipping high up into the air! Quite tiring but yes we will definitely go again! Hall VII Activities Review Christmas has always been a day for families to gather. This year, Hall VII wanted to bring warmth and love to those who are away from home and organized a 'Gingerbread Man Decorating Night'. Being the last activity of the semester, we wanted to offer residents with a relaxing yet festive event just before the arrival of the final examinations. We gathered Leadership Team members and floor tutors to ensure that the gingerbread man cookies were freshly baked on that very day. Though it was time consuming, it was such an enjoyment to bond with the team in a room filled with the scent of spices while organizing an activity for the residents. Our residents were then able to show off their talents and creativity by decorating gingerbread man cookies. The activity not only allowed us to bring love to our residents but also allowed them to send their appreciation to their loved ones through their very own decorated gingerbread man. Halls VIII & IX Activities Review Carnival, UG Halls VIII & IX (October 4 2016) The Halls VIII & IX Carnival was an event held by the Organizing Team (OT} and might perhaps be one of the best events ever. Instead of an ordinary/everyday event with a particular rundown aiming to integrate the participants, the Carnival allowed residents to walk-in at any given time and enjoy the activities with one another casually. This means that any latecomers was unlikely to feel excluded and was still able to choose which games they would like to play. The Carnival consisted of several booths, along with a food and drinks stand, that all required tokens provided at the entrance - making the whole event much more legitimate and fun. All the traditional games were there; tin can toss, coin pitch and so on. I believe that even without the overall prize for those who could win a given number of games, the games themselves were worthwhile and entertaining enough! Meanwhile, the food was nothing short of spectacular; pizza, popcorn, cotton candy, fried chicken, fries, just to name a few snacks that they had. It's amazing that they have pulled off the popcorn and cotton candy, making the whole event feel and smell like a carnival. Overall, it was a great event to attend with friends and get a laugh out of in an otherwise stressful week of midterms. Participants dresses up to enjoy the night Tin Can Toss (A traditional game that never gets old.) Cotton candy was in high demand! New facilities in UG Halls In order to facilitate the development of Residential Life Education, a store room in UG Hall I and the Seafront Quiet Room of Hall II have been revamped into a Kitchen and Multi-Purpose Room for holding Hall Activities in this residential year. UG Hall I Kitchen Hall I Kitchen serves as a platform for all the cooking lovers to exchange ideas and cultivate a healthy lifestyle. It is in a convenient location .which welcomes all the residents to walk in any of the hall activities organized by Hall Education Team. Residents of UG Hall I may refer to the email sent by the Hall Office for the booking procedures. Hall I Kitchen is well-equipped with oven, cooker hood, induction cooker, sinks and cabinets Traditional North Afi'ican Cookies Workshop was held in November 2016. UG Hall II Multi-Purpose Room The Multi-Purpose Room is located on the 1/F of Hall II and it is fully furnished, air-conditioned and equipped with oven, micro-wave oven, cooker hood, induction cooker, refrigerator, water machine, TV and AV equipment. Couple of Hall Activities which are organized by the Hall Education Team have been carried out in this room in the Fall Term 2016.
