HKUST’s MPhil program of Technology Leadership and Entrepreneurship (TLE) brought three young people together and their lives were forever changed. Jitesh Chhabria, Phillip Chan and Derek Yip have caused a storm ever since they designed a sensor-embedded smart sleeve that provides users virtually assisted fitness training anywhere, anytime. The product, Fit-Kick, first won the championship at HKUST’s Healthcare Designathon Competition. The trio then became one of the eight teams in Asia selected to join the AIA Accelerator program. They went on to win top awards at the YDC E-Challenge as well as the JEC Outstanding Engineering Project Awards. The goal of the TLE program is to enhance students’ development in technology innovation, leadership skills and capability for entrepreneurship. The innovators feel empowered by the program to realize their entrepreneurial dreams. “Studying in the RPg program gives me solutions and a safety net: flexibility, assistance from the fellowship, and access to experts and support in all areas,” says Derek. The trio founded their own start-up, Sensable Dynamics, and launched a new product as an extension of their initial innovation – Koach TV is now the world’s first smart and fully-connected video workout platform. “We want to change the way fitness facilities offer their services, and reach out to a wider and busier audience,” says Phillip. All these excitements seem to be just the beginning for these three young entrepreneurs. Three HKUST postgraduate students from different programs joined hands to bring to the market an ultrasound technology that enables drugs to be delivered into the eye painlessly, leaving no side effects. The device is revolutionary since it can spare patients from invasive eye injections. Having won multiple accolades, the new technology is now under prototype development and seeking regulatory approval which will pave the way for market entry. One of the innovators, Jan Engels, PhD Student in Chemistry, remembers being inspired by the strong entrepreneurial culture at HKUST. “I joined regularly the Be Your Own Boss (BYOB) seminar series organized by the Entrepreneurship Center, which gave me great insights on entrepreneurship and starting your own business,” says Jan. He entered the HKUST One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition two times and received second prize in 2014. He also enrolled in a PG course which taught him how to write a business plan and where he met other Co-founders. With the support and knowledge they received from the University, their innovation went on to win the HK Chapter championship, Asia Region championship and Asia Rising Star Award in the 2015 TiE International Business Plan Competition and be named one of 50 emerging global entrepreneurs to watch by Inc. Magazine. Jan and his partners, Langston Suen, PhD graduate in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and Mathew Mak, MPhil graduate in Electronic and Computer Engineering, subsequently founded their own company. “Now at the end of my PhD studies, I’m looking forward to pitching our innovation in front of investors, raising seed funding, and being my own boss,” says Jan. He dreamed of building flying machines ever since he was little. In 2006, his first year as an MPhil student, he founded DJI, a company which is now the global leader in developing and manufacturing small, unmanned automated aerial systems for commercial and recreational use. The encouragement he received at HKUST helped his dream – and his drones – take flight. He remembers his mentor and supervisor with particular appreciation, “His research field is in robotics rather than unmanned aerial systems, but he was open to my interest and let me follow it. He also recommended some of his students to join my company. He helped us a lot.” Based in Shenzhen, DJI now operates in the Americas, Europe, Japan, Hong Kong and Mainland China with a workforce of over 5,000 employees. Prof Naubahar SHARIF Associate Professor in Social Science at HKUST MPhil Graduate in Social Science Impressed by the Founding President, Naubahar obtained his BBA and MPhil at HKUST. He went on to complete his PhD in the US. Later he decided to return to his alma mater. “Hong Kong is carving out a role for itself in the new knowledge-based global economy, and repositioning itself in a new relationship with Mainland China. My career goals are to help Hong Kong move forward at this important juncture in our history.” Naubahar has consulted for the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Commission to create a framework for assessing the impact of innovation on Hong Kong’s economy. He also developed a massive open online course (MOOC) on “Science, Technology and Society in China,” which was hailed as Asia’s first MOOC. In 2009, he received the HKUST School of Humanities and Social Science Best Teacher Award. Eddy WU Executive Medical Director, China at Allergan PhD Graduate in Biochemistry Having worked in a number of countries, Eddy cannot stress enough the importance of seeing things globally. He began his career with Novartis in 2006 and was later stationed in Basel, Switzerland, where he served as Medical Director for the Asia Pacific, Middle East and African Countries (AMAC) region. He then left for Shanghai to take up the position of Executive Medical Director, China at Allergan. Eddy has received numerous awards for his professional achievements: the Most Desirable Rookie, the Novartis Golden Employee Award, and the Asia Pacific Best Practice (Medical Science Liaison) Award, just to name a few. But he traced everything back to his training at HKUST, which helped him broaden his horizons. He is particularly grateful to his mentor and PhD supervisor, for inspiring him to approach issues from a wide range of perspectives.
