NEXT New Residence Masters on Board Student Housing and Residential Life Office is delighted to have three new faculty members commit their time and effort to take up the role of Residence Master. The three new Residence Masters are Prof. Volkan Kursun of UG Hall I, Prof. Alexis Lau of UG Hall IV and Prof. Derrald Stice of UG Hall VII. All of them are from different background, but with intelligent and passion, they will work towards the common goal of providing intellectual and pastoral guidance to our residents.

Prof. Volkan Kursun, UG Hall I

Prof. Volkan Kursun is an associate professor of Electronics and Computer Engineering at HKUST. His primary research interest lies on developing energy-efficient and reliable microprocessors and memory chips for advanced computers and mobile devices. He enjoys spending time and sharing life experiences with students. He believes education is not confined to classrooms. Instead, teaching and learning continues in the residence halls. He would encourage residents of UG Hall I to establish many long-lasting friendships and experience some of the most memorable moments under one roof in UG Hall I.

Prof. Alexis Lau, UG Hall IV

Prof. Alexis Lau is a professor in the Division of Environment and the Department of Civil and Environment Engineering. Born in Tai O, the native Hongkonger is proud of the cultural heritage of his home town. This leads to his research interest in local environment issues. When he was studying aboard in university housing, he met his wife at the UBC dorm cafeteria. His devotion to residential life is by no means co-incident. He hopes UG Hall IV can be a platform for residents to learn and appreciate diversity, enjoy friendly arguments and may even meet their better-halves along the way.

Prof. Derrald Stice, UG Hall VII

Prof. Derrald Stice is an assistant professor in the Department of Accounting at HKUST, who is married with two young daughters. He has his root in HKUST since he was a teenager when he lived on campus at HKUST while his father was a faculty member in the Business School. Prof. Stice enjoys interacting with students and is delighted to have more opportunity to do so in UG Hall VII. He reckons the time spent living on campus is a unique and special time in university life. He has got an important piece advice for our residents, ‘to embrace the new adventures that await us this year.’

PREVIOUS NEXT Your Big Brothers and Sisters in Halls Hall Tutors are the big brothers and big sisters in halls to take care of the residents. This year, we are happy to have 11 new Tutors joining the big family. They are as eager to let you know about themselves as much as you want to know about them. Anand and Cyrus, two of the new Tutors, would like you to share with you their background as well as a few pieces of advice.

Anand Inasu Clittilappilly, Hall Tutor of UG Hall VIII

I am Anand, a 2nd year Computer Science PhD student coming from India. It gives me great pleasure to be one of the Hall Tutors of UG Hall VIII. UG is a very important phase in everyone's life. It is the time when students start to learn about diversities, a time which immensely shapes the future of a student, and a time they fondly remember for the rest of their lives. As I was also a UG student once, by being Hall Tutor, I get to share my experience with bright young minds of HKUST and help them solve different problems. My message to all the UG students is, try to explore your world. Your world should not be confined to the four walls of your classroom. In real life, experience is the best teacher and thus you should try to learn as much as you can from the ample opportunities you get at HKUST to gain vibrant experiences, not just from text books. But no matter wherever you go and whatever you do, just keep this in mind, be pure at your heart, be sincere in your actions and have a peaceful mind.

Tang Suet To, Hall Tutor of UG Hall II

My name is Tang Suet To. You can call me Cyrus. I completed my undergraduate in HKUST, majoring in Physics and Mathematics. Now I am studying M.Phil in Physics here. I was an executive committee of Physics Students’ Society when I was a UG student. Also, I took a gap year to join a one-year placement program in the Hong Kong Observatory in Year 3. If you have any difficulties in striking a balance between schoolwork and social life, you are always welcome to talk to me. I like hiking and playing badminton on holidays, you may think of joining me if you are also interest in these! As a Hall Tutor in the coming year, I hope I can organize interesting activities that every resident can enjoy. And after the tutor training held in August, I know that I have a good supporting team, so I am sure I can overcome all the challenges ahead.

PREVIOUS NEXT Residential Life Enhancement Program A good living environment is essential for cultural, recreational, social and academic growth. Student Housing and Residential Life Office is striking its best to provide the best hardware as possible to its residents. Aside from the responsive maintenance service and regular furnishing, we also work on the icing on the cake that can improve the everyday life of our residents.

E-Panel

Launched in late September, the E-Panel is the latest communication device for effective information distribution. Flat screen TVs were installed in the lobbies of UG Hall I – UG Hall IX, SKCC Hall and Tower C, board-casting the latest announcement of SHRL, residential life program updates, hall program updates, university updates, local and international news and etc… This is a convenient way to take a glimpse at the latest information whenever you pass by of waiting for your friends at the lobby from 7a.m. to 11p.m..

Brightening-up Your Day (Umbrella Lending Scheme)

Student Housing and Residential Life Office (SHRL) is delighted to launch Brightening Up Your Day, the umbrella lending scheme which keeps you dry.

Year after year, the rainy season comes as usual. To stop the rain from ruining your day, SHRL is lending umbrellas to residents in need. You do not have to bother signing up for this. Once you are in need of an umbrella, you are ‘qualified’ to benefit from the scheme. It feeds on the collaboration of the users. Everyone has the responsibility to maintain its lifespan. Umbrellas will be ready for pick up at the collection points in rainy days. Once you finished using the umbrella, you kindly put it back to one of the collection points in area outside Student Housing and Residential Life Office and lobbies of UG Hall I – UG Hall IX.

Luggage Tag

More than a decorative piece of plastic to hang on your luggage, the luggage tag distributed by Student Housing and Residential Life Office represents the belief of the office. The ergonomic design of this welcome gift promises maximum grip under every condition. Artistically the grinning teeth that pop out on the front is a representation of the joyful and memorable experience living in residential hall. The huge colour contrast is a reminder of the thrill and excitement of joining the array of Residential Life Program. It is almost intoxicating just by looking at it. Aesthetics aside, the luggage tag also minimizes the number of lost property by providing space on the back for personal information.

PREVIOUS NEXT What's in Store for Academic Year 2015/16? Hall as literally the ‘home away from home’ for our residents, has the obligation to provide more than just the most scenic backdrop one has to offer. In fact, it is our obligation to provide a vibrant and diverse living and learning platforms for our residents. With the unfailing support from the staff members of Student Housing and Residential Life Office, it is our honor to present to you a series of events that will be held throughout the whole academic year.

Green Trekker Program

The Green Trekker Program offers opportunities to residents, who are passionate in environmental protection, to realize their concepts of sustainability and become leaders to promote a green culture among the hall community. Upcoming events include recycling campaign and overseas study tour.

Hall Language Buddy Program

The Hall Language Buddy Program aims to provide a platform for the newly-admitted international undergraduates and incoming exchange residents to adapt to the brand-new environment in the Hall. The 120 participants have the opportunities to enhance the language and cultural exchange through participating in events like local tour and Cantonese gatherings.

Hall Community Engagement Program

The Hall Community Engagement Program aims to bring students together to initiate community services which will benefit the local community.

Residential Life Exploring Series

Residential Life Exploring Series is designed to assist mainly Year 1 residents to get ready for new challenges and prepare their pathway to succeed. Participants will join a series of events including goal setting, self-understanding activities and etiquette training. After the program, they are expected to achieve personal growth.

Freshmen Dinner

Freshmen Dinner is a platform for interaction among freshmen and faculty members. They will have chances to share interests and exchange ideas with the others which may help enhance their bonding and sense of belonging to the Hall as well as the University. Senior staff and faculties from the University will share their wisdom and insights in Freshmen Dinner.

Healthy Life Series

The Healthy Life Series is a program for promoting well-being, happiness and healthy relationship. Participants will learn the importance of balanced lifestyle trough participating in events like yoga workshop, mindfulness meditation workshop and relationship seminar.

Healthy Cooking Competition

The Healthy Cooking Competition will raise residents’ awareness on the importance of a healthy diet and to provide them with tips on preparation of healthy food while living in hall. The competition will consist of a floor-based qualifying round in each UG hall. Qualifiers will enter the finals of the competition which will be held in April 2016.

Hall Sports Competition

The Hall Sports Competition aims to provide residents with a platform to engage in inter-hall based sports competition. The competition will be consisted of tournaments of several different sports and the tournaments will adopt simple knockout format. Hall with the best achievements in all tournaments will be crowned the overall champion.

PREVIOUS NEXT Hall Language Buddy Program CHAN Ying Kwan SBM, Year 4 Organizing Committee of Hall Language Buddy Program With the presence of honorable guests, the launching ceremony was a great way to kick-start the Hall Language Buddy Program.

Many schoolmates were always curious why I would like to be the Organizing Committee of Hall Language Buddy Program. To put it simple, this was because I wanted to create a platform for the international students to make friends and have more understanding of local culture.

When I was an exchange student in University of Virginia, I realized the international students were naturally facing more challenges than the local freshmen did on adapting to the new learning environment since they were away from the original social circle and came from completely different culture. Hence, as a local students in HKUST, I hoped I could assist them in getting involved in our community easier.

Since June, we seven OCs have been preparing for the program. Though all of us had engagements like summer courses and internship along the way, we still had weekly meetings at night. Every time, we had heated debate from applicant selections’ criteria to program design since we were concerned about the quality of the program the most. It is glad that we have recruited 34 mentors, 82 buddies of 27 nationalities who speak 23 languages into our program. Even more exciting, we have successfully held our kick-off ceremony on Aug 31st under the witnesses of all honorable guests. All our efforts has paid off when we saw the participants were highly involved in our ice-breaking games and enjoyed having conversations with one another. In the upcoming days, we are ready to hold Hong Kong one-day tour and international night. I hope this platform could let our participants have fun and nurture great friendship between them.

PREVIOUS NEXT Cantonese Gathering, Hall Language Buddy Program JANG, Seo Young SBM, Year 2 Participant of Hall Language Buddy Program Despite the fact that I have been studying in Hong Kong since last year, I have put very little effort in learning Cantonese; I have been taking it for granted how easily I can get around knowing only English. The Hall Language Buddy Cantonese Gathering was the first event I attended to learn Cantonese, and surprisingly I found it so exciting and fun!

Each of us was assigned to different groups and we had to play different games to earn points and win the prizes. After a whole year in Hong Kong, I finally learned how to count all the numbers and say all the directions! Apart from that, we were also given various scenarios – such as when we are at a restaurant, or in a taxi, etc. – and learned different expressions and words that would come in handy for each scenario. I enjoyed the session very much as it was not only very engaging but also very useful.

After the event we were given a small booklet that contained all the materials we had gone through that evening. I still carry the booklet around with me and try to find situations I can use the expressions I have learned. I am glad that I had joined the event, and I will definitely be looking forward to the next gatherings. Ngo hou zung yi gwong dung waa! (I love Cantonese!)

Participants are trying hard to learn the Cantonese taught. Participants get the chance to put what they have learnt into practice by joining the challenging games.

Dialogue in the Dark is an interactive and amazing exhibition that provides participants with a simulation of visual impairment and walk through Hong Kong in complete darkness. We passed through the forest, took the ferry, went to the market, relaxed in the cinema and had a great time in the café with only a walking stick and by following the voice of the guide. We all had great difficulty looking for direction at first, thus we were panic and helpless. But after a while, we learnt and our senses were improved and heightened which allowed us to ‘see’ more than usual.

At the end, we had a sharing with the guide who was visually impaired. Through the sharing, we knew more about how the blind community dealt with the daily challenge which inspired me a lot.

PREVIOUS NEXT Living Green, Green Trekker Training Camp JOSHI Kalyani SBM, Year 1 Green Trekker Program Green Trekkers collecting firewood for cooking. Green Trekker is a new program launched by Student Housing and Residential Life Office.It offers opportunities to residents, who are passionate in environmental protection, to realize their concepts of sustainability and become leaders to promote a green culture among the hall community.

To kick start the program, a two-day training camp was organized at a campsite on 19 and 20 September. It was truly a memorable and meaningful experience. The first activity of the camp was shopping for ingredients for our vegetarian meals in a local market. It was not an easy task because we had to shop for ingredients without any packaging – no plastic bags, no bottle containers and no foam containers. We spent so much time picking the right things and headed to the campsite.

As soon as we arrived at the campsite, I realised that this trip was going to be very different from other camps. Collecting firewood, learning how to set up our own tents, cooking meals by setting up a fire were all my first ever experiences in my life. As Green Trekkers who come from very different backgrounds, we quickly developed our friendship and trust. This was because we all shared the same goal – to make our hall community greener.

The highlight of the camp was the night hike planned by Ye Man, instructor of the camp. Despite the fact that we were not allowed to use our torches, we managed to find our way up the hill. After reaching the top, we all laid down and listened to the inspiring sharing from Ye Man. I was deeply impressed by his green lifestyle and hoped someday in future I would be as green as him. At one point, I almost forgot that I had to return to the “city” life.

Inspired by this training camp, I would like to spread the idea of environmental sustainability among the HKUST community and to influence others to be more environmentally friendly. The Green Trekker Program provides a great platform for us to turn our ideas into actions. In the coming year, we will be organizing a wide range of projects to increase the environmental awareness of all residents in UG Halls. Let’s join our efforts in making a greener hall life!

PREVIOUS NEXT Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, Give-and-Take Campaign DELUCIA, Monica IPO, Year 4 UG Hall VI Monica (left) and other helpers are helping to sort different items from campaign. The Student Housing and Residential Life Office organized a Give-and-Take Campaign during the mass check-out period in June. The campaign concluded with a great success as it provided an opportunity for students to recycle items that would have otherwise ended up in rubbish bins.

I was chosen to serve as one of the Give-Take Campaign volunteers and was responsible for sorting out the materials from the Give-and-Take counter. Before coming to the counter, I did not expect to see of the huge amount good stuffs. But surprisingly, a lot of valuable items including bedding, bags, books, electronics, stationary, clothes, caps, shoes were found. Some of the items were completely new with the price tag attached.

We ended up giving many useful items such as books, printer, camera, new caps, and jersey to the library, HKUST garage sale and recycling companies. When I went back home that day, I had some thoughts on these second hand goods. Many students spend a lot of money on things that they don’t actually need. We sometimes buy stuff just because of the great sale offer or just a momentary desire. We simply forget to think about the tight space we have back home and how expensive the storage will be during summer break. Throwing lots of ‘untouched’ items will be the only option we have at the end of the term.

I hope to convey some important messages when you read this article. Think before you buy. Safe money, safe the planet, and safe your space! Try to visit second hand platforms before buying new stuff or throwing things away. Let’s build a better world.

PREVIOUS NEXT Mid-Autumn Festival Mini-Concert, UG Hall I Miss. Jo Poon Residential Life Officer UG Hall I Everybody scrambles to win the riddle game! The gathering started with a brief introduction of Mid-Autumn Festival as well as a riddle game which we usually play during this festive season. However, this time we faced a challenge! It was the first time for some of us to play riddle game in English! After a few trials, we finally made it and won a box of chocolate during the team competition.

After the exciting riddle game, our mini-concert started with a relaxing classical music by a pianist with an electric keyboard. What a pleasant moment after day-long classes!

A Russian musician gave us a combination of fast beat pop song and a blue Russian song. We shared the sad feeling from his sentiment though we don’t know the Russian lyrics. There is no boundary in music.

Here came the performance of Gu Zheng. With complicated pizzicato parts and arpeggios, the audiences were inspired by the swift and flexible movements of the player. This musical instrument appears in many Chinese costume dramas, so most of us found it very interesting and made a trial after the concert.

PREVIOUS NEXT Squid Fishing Boat Trip cum Marine Life Seminar, UG Hall I Miss. Jo Poon Residential Life Officer UG Hall I Introduction on squids by Hall Tutor. Hong Kong has an amazing marine biodiversity, which is the home of around 1000 marine fish species and over 80 hard coral species (more than the entire Caribbean Sea). In the boat trip, participants set their target on the squids, which are very active during May to September in Sai Kung.

Squids are the largest and most intelligent of all invertebrate. They are able to change color quickly using irregularly shaped pigment cells, which can be used as threat display, during mating or evading enemies. Our Hall Tutor, Jeff who is a Life Science PhD candidate, gave an introduction on squids and information on marine life habitat in Hong Kong.

Participants paid extra attention to fishing and tried every mean to get a big harvest, such as making a fishing rod, using fishing ball as bait, etc. Some were the lucky ones and caught 1 or 2 squids. One got the blessing from the sea and caught FIVE! We called him “ Master of Squid Fishing”.

PREVIOUS NEXT Mid-Autumn Festival Gathering, UG Hall II KIM Mijung PhD(CSE), Year 1 Tutor of UG Hall II To celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, the residential life ambassadors of UG Hall II organized a Mid-Autumn Festival gathering in the hall on 23 September 2015 under the guidance of the Hall Tutor.

During the gathering, we introduced the origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival and how it’s celebrated in Hong Kong and Korea. We also held a traditional lantern making workshop and enjoyed Chinese traditional mooncake and snow mooncake together.

We were very glad that more than 40 residents have participated in this festive event.They all enjoyed making their own lanterns and were happy to taste various flavors of mooncakes. It was interesting to see that they ccould be very creative in making different shapes and patterns on the lanterns with the same basic tools. It was also nice to see that the residents had a chance to get to know one another and shared the same experience together.

I believe that this event has helped our hall life to be more fruitful and fun.

PREVIOUS NEXT Art Jamming Workshop, UG Hall II SONG Garam IELM, Year 2 Residential Life Ambassador of UG Hall II Participants focusing on their paintings. On 10 October 2015, the Hall Office organized an interesting art jamming workshop to help residents of Hall II and Hall VI relieve stress from the upcoming midterm. Prof. David Banfield, Residence Master of UG Hall II, and Hall Tutors also took part in this workshop.

Two instructors from Paintable Studio were invited to instruct the residents how to draw and paint professionally. They also provided all material necessary for art jamming including canvas, brushes and acryl paint.

In the very beginning, each of the resident chose a reference drawing and sketched the outline with pencils. Then, by using various colors of acryl paints, each one of us was able to obtain ideal artwork. It seemed that all the participants enjoyed appreciating the artwork done by themselves and the others.

The workshop continued for almost three hours. After completing the workshop, participants took a group photo while holding their artwork in their hands.

All in all, the atmosphere of the workshop was really pleasant and comfortable. I hope this activity can be conducted periodically to let more residents engage in learning and appreciating the art.

PREVIOUS NEXT Leather DYI Workshop, UG Hall II YIP Wing Tung BSC, Year 3 Residential Life Ambassador of UG Hall II In this workshop, participants could make their own leather coin purses, name card cases, key holders, luggage tags, name tags or earphone holders.

This workshop was a great success, especially with the guidance of the good instructors. Clear instructions in bilingual were given, which allowed participants to understand easily. Although the process was quite demanding, especially many new skills like sewing and hammering were taught, instructors still tried their very best to ensure safety and provide us with chances to try at the same time. Some stages like sewing require patience and high concentration, but the instructors were very willing to assist. They also stationed at every tablein order to make sure all participants were able to catch up.

Moreover, participants enjoyed the process a lot, especially when they could take away the product after their hard work. The design of leather products was very fashionable, which was almost the same as those we purchased. Before the workshop, some male participants thought that the leather products seemed girlish to them, but it turned out they were very satisfied their final product.

However, some participants could not finish the whole work within the time, as the process was not easy. Therefore, it is suggested that duration of the workshop could be extended (around 30 minutes). This workshop was a breakthrough for many participants, as this was the first time for them to try making their own leather products. All of them seemed to have fun, and many of them wished that similar workshop could be organized in the future.

The first UG Hall III Movie Night was successfully held in Multi-Function Room of UG Hall III on 24 Sep 2015 night. There were around 20 residents joining this event. The movie played was “Interstellar”, a science fiction film which features a crew of astronauts who travel through a wormhole in search of a new home for humanity. For details of the movie, please visit http://bit.ly/1JtejQy. What food or drinks are needed for watching a movie? I believe they would be soft drinks and popcorns. In order to let participants enjoy the movie night, a new popcorn machine has been purchased for this event for making fresh and delicious popcorns for audiences. Many participants were surprised by the free popcorns. Although it was unbelievable, they all enjoyed the movie with the fresh popcorns and cool soft drinks.

For those residents who missed the movie night, there is no need to be disappointed as UG Hall III will organize the movie night every last Thursday until April 2016 (except Oct & Dec 2015 and Jan 2016). Besides, if residents have any favorite film which they want to share with hall mates, they can simply fill out the movie recommendation form and drop it into the collection box on G/F of UG Hall III for selection.

On 22 October, UG Hall III had an exciting Pumpkin Cooking Night in G18 Sitting Room of UG Hall III. There were three teams joining the event and making delicious dishes to celebrate Halloween. Before the event, three teams decided the dish titles and ingredients besides Japanese pumpkin and prepared all raw materials within the budgets. The three teams were all creative. Two pumpkin soups, two pumpkin desserts and one pumpkin curry dish were proposed for the exciting event. The teams were culturally diverse as they came from different countries including China, Malaysia, Korea, Germany, etc.

The cooking night started at 7 o’clock and each team had an hour for cooking. The nice smell surrounded the sitting room, together with the cozy environment, newly installed cooking facilities and the melodious music. Everyone enjoyed the cooking and the coordination with other participants. It was such a great culture sharing moment that residents not only talked about the traditions in celebrating Halloween in their home country, but they shared other interesting customs as well.

After an hour, the five dishes made by three teams were ready. They had such nice looking and good smell! Team 1 prepared a set meal with named “Las Calabazas Magicas (In English: Royal Pumpkin Feast!)” with traditional pumpkin soup and a pumpkin . There were pumpkin seeds together with Japanese pumpkin puree in the soup and walnuts and sweet cream were highlights in the cake.

Team 2 cooked a very different pumpkin soup with ginger and apple flavor and an interesting name “My Pumpkin is Bigger than your Pumpkin: A Pumpkin Dream”. The soup was so nicely decorated that it looked like a dish prepared by a prestigious restaurant.

Team 3 had a healthy theme and the “Pumpkin Spice Latte” dish set consisted both a pumpkin curry dish served with warm bread and a steamed pumpkin dessert with red dates and lily bulbs.

Each team had a short presentation to introduce their dishes. Prof. Lo tried five dishes and gave high valuations of the flavor of the dishes and the efforts each team made. After rating the healthiness, the use of ingredients, the color, the smell, the taste, the creativity, the presentation and the team spirit, Team 1 got the highest score and won a special prize for the Pumpkin Cooking Night. Party food consisting pizzas, spaghetti, chicken wings, mushed potatoes and vegetable salad were also provided and enjoyed by all participants in addition to the nice pumpkin dishes.

It was a memorable night of UG Hall III! We celebrated Halloween with our self-cooked pumpkin dishes; we also shared culture and customs with one another and made new friends!

At the beginning of Fall term when senior students and newcomers were still preparing themselves for busy school life ahead, Hall Office had organized a welcome dinner to kick start the new school year for Hall IV residents. Around eighty residents, together with Hall Management Team, spent a joyous evening on 15 September. In the dinner, Prof Alexis Lau, Residence Master of Hall IV, shared with us his love for nature and adverse weather, followed by Miss Sandy Yu, Residential Life Officer, and Tutors. Regardless of different backgrounds and interests, members of the Hall Office are always ready to offer help and advice. It was also glad to have Alex Chow, President of Vista, House IV Students’ Association, to introduce House IV and Losay (the store run by them) to residents. They expressed their eagerness to make Hall IV a fun place to live.

After warming up in the first ice-breaking game, the tutor gave residents some challenges to test their knowledge about Hall IV. The answers to some tricky questions even surprised most senior residents. For example, sixth floor is the top floor but Hall IV is actually a seven-storey building; the brand of the television set in the common room is something many are not aware of.

When the residents were being asked to comment on the best part of living in Hall IV, Prof Alexis Lau was impressed with the answer from a full-time student from France who has been living in Hall IV since 2013. The student mentioned diversity is the best part in Hall IV with a connection between locals and non-locals. We learn from one another of different backgrounds and perspectives. Indeed, what better place to foster exchange with friends visiting from afar than the one you live with them?

Over 70 residents spent a pleasant evening on 23rd September at Hall IV to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival. In the first part, Hall IV tutors demonstrated how to make a snowy mooncake. There were different flavors and mooncake molds for the participants to choose from to make a special mooncake. The workshop was so popular that we even used up all the ingredients!

In the second part, Prof. Alexis Lau, Residence Master, and tutors shared the origin and tales of Mid-Autumn Festival. Some international residents also shared with us their traditional customs in celebrating Harvest Festival in their hometowns. It was nice to learn about different cultures in our sharing. The students were also entertained by magic performance and riddle games. Everyone at the event ended up having a good time, leaving with mooncakes, lanterns and happy memories.

New residents had a chance to meet their fellow hall-mates and make new friends while enjoying delicious buffer dinner during the event. Prof. Robert Qi, Residence Master of UG Hall V, gave an opening speech to all participants and officially welcomed them to join the big family of Hall V.

"Our hall is your home away from home," says Prof. Qi. "It is important for you to treat the hall like a home to you and build a fruitful hall life here."

PREVIOUS NEXT Kick Start of a New Residential Year NUGRAHA, Davin SBM, Year 2 UG Hall VI Professor Yeung, LLC Fellows and other members of the Hall Management joins the Orientation Night together with us. UG Hall VI’s Orientation Night was one of the orientation activities organized by the Connection Team to kick start the new residential year. It took place on 10 Sept 2015 in Common Room 5+6. This was a great opportunity for residents to get to know one another. It was great to see some local students teaching Cantonese to the international students. Although with minor slips and clumsy pronunciation of the Cantonese words from the international students, laughter was shared throughout the room.

I was allocated to sit with twoexchange students from the United States. They had just been in Hong Kong for two weeks and would be leaving by the end of the term. It fascinated me how the community is culturally vibrant with people of different backgrounds. Not long later, my Hall Tutor also joined our table and shared his experiences in pursuing his Master’s degree in the United States. It was a good time for us to get acquainted with one another for the academic year.

I was glad to meet Professor Yeung, Residence Master of UG Hall VI, LLC Fellows and other members of the Hall Management. Their welcoming speeches were inspiring. I should seize every opportunity to join the upcoming hall activities.

Orientation Night was such a great success. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Hall Management and the Connection Team of UG Hall VI for preparing such a wonderful night. Hope there will be many excited hall activities ahead.

The Hall VII Welcome Dinner last Tuesday was a great way to start off a new school year, meeting new people from our hall, getting to know the Hall Tutors on each floor, and learning about the upcoming events and activities. It was also a great introduction to the Hall structure for residents to get to know how everything works (Leadership Team, LLCs), which was very helpful especially for new students like me. I liked how the tables were organized by floor, which made it much easier to meet my neighbors and learn more about floor-based events. I also learned that a lot of people on my floor are international students, and it was really cool talking to them and learning more about their countries and cultures. I really love how Hall VII promotes cultural diversity through many of their events, like the Global Village last Wednesday where people were able to share cultural experience and snacks from around the world.

The dinner was a great kick-off to this year and I really learnt a lot about Hall VII, residential life, and got the opportunity to meet new people from my hall and floor. As Hall VII is home to people from all over the world, I’m really excited to meet more people from different cultures by involving actively in the upcoming events.

Everybody enjoys the time mingling with and getting to know one another.

Thanks to Hall VII Leadership Team! They held a wonderful cultural sharing activity named "International Night" on 9 September. I was very lucky to be one of the participants.

Food Prepared by International Students There were a lot of groups representing different countries. They were the mainfocus of this event. They made dishes which represented their hometowns. I tasted lots of typical food from different countries such as Indonesia, USA, China, India and Germany. It was so hard for me to taste international food in my university life. But, I could have a try in this activity!

Interaction with Residents and LLC Fellows It was the most excited cultural exchange activity since I lived in Hall VII. I have explored different cultures by listening to lots of sharing by international students. It was a nice night for me because it broadened my horizons. It also enhanced my knowledge about the globe because I was exposed to lots of fact which was new for me.

Our Resdience Master and iVillage Fellows also came to talk with us. They were kind persons who have strong passion to care about our residential life. We shared our daily hall life with them. And they gave us interesting feedback. We were really enjoy talking with them.

Korean food was a popular item of the night. Residents are trying their best to deliver a unique cultural experience to the hungry participants.

PREVIOUS NEXT Meet You in the DARK: Orientation Nights of UG Hall VIII and UG Hall IX Miss Carmen Lau Project Assistant UG Hall IX Student mimicking sounds of animals to find their groupmates.

More than 200 residents of UG Hall VIII and UG Hall IX had a distinctive experience at the Orientation Nights on 8 and 9 September respectively. Wandering in the dark blindfolded, typical ice-breaking games became something unfamiliar yet interesting to everyone.

Participants were blindfolded and grouped during the orientation nights. They needed to yell for their groupmates by making sounds of a certain animal in the beginning. The games began with finding groupmates. Blindfolded residents mimicked the sound of animals to locate their groupmates. The next game was to recite the name of each groupmate. The last game was to feed their partners without looking.

Residents enjoyed the night and they agreed it was a unique experience comparing with other welcoming activities. They realized that getting to know new friends was more than just judging one’s appearance.

The night finished with a feast and bingo games.

PREVIOUS New Charge Rates for Air-conditioning and Laundry Service

Starting from Fall 2015, new charge rates for air-conditioning and laundry service in all student halls will be adjusted as follows:

Air-conditioning:

- $1 per 65 minutes

Laundry Service:

- Washing with detergent provided: $9 per cycle

- Washing without detergent provided: $8 per cycle

Drying: $1 per 5 minutes
