There are two kinds of visiting opportunities: postgraduate visiting internship student (research only), and visiting postgraduate student (coursework only). Non-local students interested in becoming a visiting student will also need to apply for a student visa/ entry permit. 18 19 Enrichment and Support International Opportunities Exchanges to universities overseas and in Mainland China provide our students with the chance to gain experience of working in a different environment and to strengthen professional contacts. To enhance professional and international exposure, Research Travel Grants are available to research postgraduate students to present papers at international conferences. For full-time PhD students. there is also the opportunity to apply for an Overseas Research Attachment Award sponsored by the University. Professional Development To enhance the research experience at HKUST, all research postgraduate students are required to take professional development courses. This non-academic but essential training aims to provide our students with a comprehensive set of professional development skills and knowledge for personal growth and career development. Career Building Our strong links with other academic institutions and different industries locally, nationally and internationally, help to create career opportunities for postgraduates. Various units of the University work together to guide and assist students in their job search and career development: • Career programs, workshops, and seminars are regularly organized by the Student Affairs Office's Career Center (career.ust.hk ), Schools and Program Offices. • The Center for Enhanced Learning and Teaching ( celt.ust.hk ) provides orientation sessions, workshops and seminars to postgraduate teaching assistants to further their knowledge and understanding as educators. • The University's Entrepreneurship Program helps HKUST graduates to launch hi-tech start-up companies. HKUST POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS 20~17 Personal Growth In addition, there are many on-going enrichment activities to enjoy. Among them are: • Lectures, seminars and forums by key thinkers and leaders, including Nobel Laureates. top business executives, academics, artists and community figures. • Courses and self-access learning in many different languages as well as English business communication and technical communication programs catering for the career needs of graduates, offered by the Center for Language Education (cle.ust.hk). • Numerous arts and cultural activities, including an Artist-in-Residence program, arranged by the University's Center for the Arts (artsctr.ust.hk). 20 21 Money Matters Tuition Fees Research postgraduate programs (MPhiVPhDJ HK$42, 100 per annum (full-time/ part-time) Tuition fees are payable in two equal installments at the beginning of each regular term. The tuition fees quoted above are subject to government confirmation. Taught postgraduate programs (i.e. EMBA, MBA. MA, MSc, PGDJ Postgraduate Studentships Information 1s available on the relevant School/ Program website, accessible via pg.ust.hklprograms HKUST offers postgraduate studentships to full-time research postgraduate students to provide financial assistance to cover daily subsistence, tuition fees and other related expenses during their studies. Awards given are based on academic merit, English Language proficiency, and the suitability of students for the proposed program of study, as is the selection of applicants for admission to postgraduate studies. The postgraduate studentship rate is subject to review annually. The rate is HK$15,000 per month for the 2015-16 academic year. l!l ~l!l Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFSJ Established by the Research Grants Council (RGC), the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme aims to attract top students globally to undertake doctoral studies in Hong Kong. The Fellowship provides each awardee with HK$240,000 (-US$30,000) and a conference travel allowance of HK$10,000 (-US$1,300) per year for three years. HKUST will provide awardees with the same level of monthly stipend and travel allowance for their 4th year of study. Around 200 PhD Fellowships will be awarded across Hong Kong for the 2016-17 academic year. More details are available at pg.ust.hklhkpfs. Most are offered to students on the strength of academic merit and the recommendations of their School or Department. Other scholarships may have conditions specified by the donor. How to Apply When applying to HKUST, you must satisfy the Universi!Y's general requirements and the specific admission requirements of your chosen program. There are also English Language requirements for applicants whose mother tongue is not English and whose previous degree progra did not use English as the medium of instruction . General Requirements .. .a --- •• --- If you are seeking admission to a doctoral degree program, you should have obtained a bachelor's degree with a proven record of outstanding performance from a recognized institution, or presented evidence of satisfactory work at the postgraduate level on a full-time basis for at least one year or on a part-time basis for at least two years. You also have to satisfy the specific requirements prescribed by the relevant School and Department as to your chosen subject of research and fitness to undertake the research. If you are seeking admission to a master's degree or postgraduate diploma program, you should have obtained a bachelor's degree from a recognized institution, or an approved equivalent qualification. If you receive an offer, follow the instructions given to accept it, pay a deposit to secure your place, and send the official documents to substantiate the qualifications presented in your application. • .I. --- Visa/ Entry Permit Application for Non-Local Students All non-local students, including students from Mainland China, Taiwan and Macau, are required to obtain a student visa/ entry permit to study in Hong Kong. Students are strongly encouraged to apply for student visas/ entry permits through HKUST, with the Head of Postgraduate Outreach and Admissions Team acting as the sponsor. Details of visa/ entry permit application procedures can be found at pg.ust.hklvisa. There is a fee to cover the visa/ entry permit label and cost of forwarding the label. If you are looking for accommodation outside the University, the Off-Campus Housing Section of the Student Housing and Residential Life Office provides general assistance and offers an information service on how and where to find such accommodation. HKUST POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS 20~ l7 28 29 The Library tibrary.ust.hk Centrally located on campus, the Lee Shau Kee Library is a core component of our academic programs, offering a rich array of information resources and energetically supporting learning, teaching and research at HKUST. The purpose-built, five-story building is well-equipped for computing, digital applications, enhanced information retrieval, and wireless network connectivity. It also includes a 24-hour Learning Commons, which provides a technology-rich environment for active learning and education. In addition to reading tables and study carrels for individual use, there are group study rooms, media viewing rooms, seminar and presentation rooms, e·classrooms, and a multi-function room for instructional purposes. The Library provides access services, reference and information assistance, library instruction, and other quality service programs to help further learning and research. It also stages exhibitions and organizes book talks and learning activities for self-development and broader exposure.
