A Regional Higher Education Hub Becoming a postgraduate in Hong Kong provides access to a thriving academic community. The Research Grants Council has successfully set up the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme to draw top students from around the world to doctoral studies in Hong Kong. Restrictions have also been lifted to enable non-local graduates to remain in Hong Kong for 12 months following graduation to seek employment or further study. English is generally the medium of instruction in public higher education institutions. People Of Hong Kong’s population of seven million-plus, 95% are of Chinese descent and 5% from all over the world. The latter are active and highly visible members of the community. Climate Hong Kong has a sub-tropical climate with temperatures ranging from around 10°C in winter to 34°C in summer. Most rain falls in the summer months. To enhance professional and international exposure, research travel grants are available to research postgraduate students to present papers at international conferences. For full-time PhD students, there is also the opportunity to apply for an overseas research attachment award sponsored by the University. Professional Development To enhance the research experience at HKUST, all new research postgraduate students are required to take professional development courses. This non-academic but essential training aims to provide our students with a comprehensive set of professional development skills and knowledge for personal growth and career development. Career Building Our strong links with other academic institutions and different industries locally, nationally and internationally, help to create career opportunities for postgraduates. Awards given are based on academic merit, English Language proficiency, and the suitability of students for the proposed program of study, as is the selection of applicants for admission to postgraduate studies. The postgraduate studentship rate is subject to review annually. The rate is HK$14,350 per month for the 2014-15 academic year. Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) Established by Hong Kong’s Research Grants Council (RGC), this scheme aims to attract top students globally to undertake doctoral studies in Hong Kong. The Fellowship provides each awardee with a monthly stipend of HK$20,000 (~US$2,600), and a conference travel allowance of HK$I0,000 (~US$1,300) per year for three years. Around 200 PhD Fellowships will be awarded across Hong Kong for the 2015-16 academic year. Tuition Fees Tuition fees are payable in two equal installments at the beginning of each regular term. The tuition fees quoted above are subject to government confirmation. Most are offered to students on the strength of academic merit and the recommendations of their School or Department. Other scholarships may have conditions specified by the donor. HKUST POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS 2015 16 22 23 How to Apply If you are seeking admission to a doctoral degree program, you should have obtained a bachelor’s degree with a proven record of outstanding performance from a recognized institution, or presented evidence of satisfactory work at the postgraduate level on a full-time basis for at least one year or on a part-time basis for at least two years. You also have to satisfy the specific requirements prescribed by the relevant School and Department as to your chosen subject of research and fitness to undertake the research. If you are seeking admission to a master’s degree or postgraduate diploma program, you should have obtained a bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution, or an approved equivalent qualification. You also have to satisfy the specific requirements prescribed by the relevant School and Department as to your fitness to pursue postgraduate study. These are available on individual program websites at pg.ust.hk/programs 1 2 Test of English as a Foreign Language ( TOEFL) 􀁴 Paper-based test (PBT) score ≥ 550 􀁴 Internet-based test (iBT) score ≥ 80 or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) 􀁴 Overall score ≥ 6.0, all sub-scores ≥ 5.5 * TOEFL/IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date. There are also English Language requirements for applicants whose mother tongue is not English and whose previous degree program did not use English as the medium of instruction. Program registration December 2014 to June 2015 January to August 2015 Mid August 2015 HKUST POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS 2015 16 24 25 All non-local students, including students from Mainland China, Taiwan and Macau, are required to obtain a student visa/entry permit to study in Hong Kong. Such students are strongly encouraged to apply for student visas/entry permits through HKUST, with the Director of Postgraduate Studies Administration acting as sponsor. Details of visa/entry permit application procedures can be found at pg.ust.hk/cgi-bin/pg/eng/visa. There is a fee to cover the visa/entry permit label and cost of forwarding the label. You can log on to the Online Admissions System to check the status of your application. If you receive an offer, follow the instructions given to accept it, pay a deposit to secure your place, and send the official documents to substantiate the qualifications presented in your application. Accepting an Offer Visa / Entry Permit Application for Non-local Students Visiting Students Application Those interested in applying to study as Visiting Internship students (research only) to conduct research at HKUST for a short period of time, should submit applications at least three months before the start of the proposed visiting period. Application Fees Application fees must be paid online by credit card and are non-refundable, non-transferrable, and subject to review. Acclaimed by all who visit, the University’s green environment offers a refreshing place to live and study, while still being conveniently located for the city center. The average student should expect to spend at least HK$100 (US$12) per day for meals on campus, plus HK$300 (US$36) per week for miscellaneous spending, depending on personal spending habits. Insurance sfao.ust.hk/insurance/info.html The University has various insurance plans covering illness, accidents and travel. If you are a non-local student, it is compulsory to subscribe to the medical and/or travel insurance scheme stipulated by the University. The type of plan depends on the nature of your studies at HKUST (full-time, exchange, etc). Accommodation sao.ust.hk/housing Two types of on-campus housing are available for postgraduate students: fully furnished apartments with single and double rooms (bunk bed); and a postgraduate hall offering single rooms. If you are looking for accommodation outside the University, the Off-Campus Housing Section (sao.ust.hk/housing/living_offcampus.html) of the Student Housing and Residential Life Office provides general assistance and offers an information service on how and where to find such accommodation. HKUST POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS 2015 16 28 29 The Library library.ust.hk Centrally located on campus, the Lee Shau Kee Library is a core component of our academic programs, offering a rich array of information resources and energetically supporting learning, teaching and research at HKUST. The purpose-built, five-story building is well equipped for computing, digital applications, enhanced information retrieval, and wireless network connectivity. It also includes a 24-hour Learning Commons, which provides a technology-rich environment for active learning and education. In addition to reading tables and study carrels for individual use, there are group study rooms, media viewing rooms, seminar and presentation rooms, e-classrooms, and a multi-function room for instructional purposes.
