Two HKUST Electronic and Computer Engineering Professors Elected IEEE Fellows 22-01-2015

Prof Pascale Fung and Prof Patrick Yue of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering <http://www.ece.ust.hk/> at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) were elected Fellows of the prestigious Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for 2015, bringing the total number of IEEE Fellows at HKUST to 35.

Prof Pascale Fung’s research interests include spoken language understanding, machine translation, multilingual language processing and music information extraction. She was recognized by the IEEE for her contributions to human-machine interactions. Prof Patrick Yue’s research interests include high-speed optical and wireless communication integrated circuit design, high-frequency CMOS transistor and passive component modeling, and wireless power transfer circuits for implantable bio-sensors. He was recognized for his contributions to the advancement of CMOS radio-frequency integrated circuits and device modeling.

Prof Fung is one of the founding faculty members of the Human Language Technology Center at HKUST, first such research center in Greater China that has produced many of the industry and academic leaders in this area, Director of InterACT@HKUST, and the founding chair of the Women Faculty Association of the University. She is Vice-President Elect and Board Member of ACL SIGDAT, a leading professional organization that pioneered data-driven methods in natural language processing. She served on the IEEE Signal Processing Society’s Speech and Language Technology Committee for six years. She has been technical chair and area chair for all the top international conferences in the speech and language area. She has been an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing, the IEEE Signal Processing Letter, the ACM Transactions on Speech and Language Processing, and the Transactions on Association for Computational Linguistics, etc. She co-founded several companies that commercialized the first Chinese natural language search engine, the first online machine translation system, and the first automatic content-based music recommendation system in the market. Prof Fung received her BS in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts in 1988, MS and PhD in Computer Science from Columbia University in 1993 and 1997 respectively.

Prof Yue is currently the Associate Provost for Knowledge Transfer at HKUST. He is the founding Director of the Center for Industry Engagement and Internship in the School of Engineering and Director of the HKUST-Qualcomm Joint Innovation and Research Laboratory. Prof Yue has contributed to more than 100 peer-reviewed technical papers and two book chapters. He also holds 13 US patents of which most are employed in IC products. He has earned the distinction of being a co-recipient of the 2003 IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference Best Student Paper Award and being the author of one of the all-time most cited papers in IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits. He is an Editor for the IEEE Electron Device Letters and has served on the organizing committee of a number of international conferences including IEEE Symposium on VLSI Circuits, IEEE RFIC Symposium and IEEE International Wireless Symposium. Prof Yue received his BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1992 with highest honor and MS and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1994 and 1998 respectively.

IEEE Fellowship is one of the most prestigious honors of the Institute. It recognizes extraordinary accomplishments in the profession and is conferred upon a person with unusual distinction and record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest following a very rigorous review. The total number of recipients each year does not exceed 0.1% of the total voting IEEE membership.
