Professor Loosdrecht specializes in “biological wastewater treatment, nutrients removal, biofilm systems, Anammox, Sharon process, Granular sludge, process and reactor design and modeling”. He received the Dutch Water Innovation Award in 1995, the DOW Energy Award in 2007 and Grand Award of International Water Association (IWA) in 2008. In 2010, he was honoured the Honorary Doctorate ETH-Zurich and Knighthood in the order of the Dutch Lion. He was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize in 2012 and Simon Stevin Master Award in 2013. He is now a Professor and Group Leader of Environmental Biotechnology, Department of Biotechnology, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. He is also a Member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Dutch Academy of Engineering, The Netherlands.
