Notes: | Croucher Advanced Study Institute on New Materials and New Concepts for Controlling Light and Waves. Talk no.17 Host: HKUST Institute for Advanced Study. Sponsor: The Croucher Foundation. Abstract: The remarkable success of electromagnetic metamaterials stimulated exploration of controlling and manipulation of other form of waves in materials. The talk will present our preliminary study of a virtual hole and a broadband acoustic collimator, by combination of the concept of complimentary media with transformational acoustics. Such effect is exemplified by a segmental defect in the original cloak, which appears as if a dipole scatterer was under the acoustic imager. We also derived a set of spatially varying effective parameter from coordinate transformation. These parameters can be readily implemented using non-resonant acoustic elements. Our numerical study confirmed the collimation of acoustic beam from a small hydrophone behind the metamaterial device. The potential application of such novel device concept in underwater communication and medical ultrasound will be also discussed. Duration: 37 min. |
