The logo of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is in several ways symbolic of the institution. Lyrically we visualize the golden head of wisdom over the open book of knowledge. Between the arms holding the book can be seen a flask representing science. Alternatively, it is a transmission tower representing engineering and technology or communication and management. We can also see a sun radiating gold, that very traditional Chinese colour, over an ocean glowing with the deep blue representative of Hong Kong. Supporting these emblems are the three Greek letters upsilon, psi and tau, that is: transliterating as UST, The logo entwines many meanings, as does the University itself.

INTRODUCTION The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) opened in October 1991 as a technological university dedicated to the advancement of learning and scholarship, with special emphasis on research, postgraduate education, and close collaboration with business and industry.

The University occupies an impressive 60-hectare site on the northern end of Clear Water Bay Peninsula at Tai Po Tsai. Situated on the slopes along the shore, the campus grounds are terraced to afford buildings on all levels with unobstructed panoramic views of the sea. The campus has been built in two phases. Phase I was completed in July 1991 and has a capacity of 2,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) undergraduate and postgraduate students. Phase II, bringing capacity to about 7,000 FTE students, was completed in January 1993.

The major source of financial support for the University is the Government of Hong Kong through the University Grants Committee (UGC) and its Research Grants Council (RGC). Student fees, other sources of research support and donations are also significant contributors to the University’s budget. Construction of Phases I and II of the campus was assisted by a grant from the Hong Kong Jockey Club of almost $2 billion toward the cost of over $3.2 billion.

The President is the chief executive officer and the three principal branches of the University are Academic Affairs, Administration and Business, and Research and Development. The Academic Affairs Branch is headed by the Provost, while the other branches are each led by a Vice-President. Within Academic Affairs are the five schools which comprise the academic heartland of HKUST. Four of the schools were established since the start of the University, each of which is divided into departments and divisions. The fifth school, the Fok Ying Tung Graduate School located at Nansha in Guangdong Province, was established in 2006. Construction work for its new campus is expected to be completed in the second half of 2011. There are a number of academic service units and research units located administratively within the branch as well. Administration and Business is concerned with the non-academic administrative and financial operation of the University. Research and Development focuses on research administration and contractual and applied research relevant to Hong Kong’s technological and socio-economic development and during the year, the Branch will also embrace postgraduate studies, as an integral part of its work. In addition to the three branches mentioned, plans are underway for the creation of a new branch, one for Institutional Advancement, to be led also by a Vice-President.

Three of the University’s schools - Science, Engineering, and Business and Management - provide both undergraduate and postgraduate education. The School of Humanities and Social Science offers postgraduate education and general education for all undergraduates. As the medium of instruction is English, classes aimed at improving English language skills are required of most students. The Fok Ying Tung Graduate School at Nansha offers postgraduate study opportunities to students from the Mainland and the surrounding region.

To complement the schools and their constituent academic departments, the University has set up interdisciplinary research institutes and centers, and the Technology Transfer Center to facilitate collaboration among the different schools and partnerships between the University and the public and private sectors. To prepare itself for the planned increase in student numbers as a result of the reform of the education system in Hong Kong, the University is engaged in several building projects on-campus, all targeting completion before the arrival of the first cohort of students for the new four-year undergraduate system in the Fall Semester 2012. These include the construction of two halls of residence for over 700 students, a new building for the School of Business and Management, as well as an extension of the Library. In addition, the purpose-built Institute for Advanced Studies building, which will accommodate various research teams led by world-renowned scholars and researchers, and related facilities, will also be completed at the same time. The current phase of on-campus development will be completed with the construction of additional teaching and research facilities in 2014. Completion of all these buildings will provide necessary physical infrastructure to enable the University to cope with the next phase of its development.

ACADEMIC FACULTY The University recruits worldwide for faculty who have achieved excellence in their fields and are highly respected as both teachers and researchers. These include both established academics and promising younger scholars. More than 85% have experience at the world’s leading research universities, either as PhD graduates, or through postdoctoral studies or teaching appointments. These men and women care about Hong Kong, its people and its future. They have broad intellectual interests, and wish to work collaboratively with colleagues in other fields and interact with professionals in industry, commerce and the public services. Most importantly, they care about their students.

STUDENTS The University seeks highly qualified and motivated young men and women with wide interests who have received a well-rounded secondary education. In addition to having achieved good grades, they should be active participants in diverse activities and possess great potential.

Most undergraduates enter the University at the age of 18 or 19. In pursuing their course of study, they are able to obtain both a good general education and a qualification relevant to their career. More than 10% of the undergraduates are non-local students whereas non-local postgraduates account for approximately half of the total postgraduate population.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

Except as noted, the undergraduate programs offered by the University normally require full-time attendance for three academic years and they all lead to honors degrees. The curriculum is founded on a credit-based system and comprises a structured set of courses. Credits are earned semester-by-semester toward the completion of the degree requirements. For graduation, students need to accumulate a total of 100 to 105 credits, as specified for each program.

The undergraduate curriculum aims to provide a well-balanced education to students. In addition to courses in the field of major study and related areas, each program includes a general education study component with specified credit requirement, which serves to expand students' educational exposure to a variety of interdisciplinary areas through taking common core courses in the areas of Science and Technology, Social Analysis, and Arts and Humanities, and ignite their interest in extending their learning experience beyond traditional subjects. Besides, all undergraduate students, except those exempted for medical or other valid reasons, must complete a one-year non-credit course on health and wellness education during their first year of study. This course is designed to encourage students to develop a healthy lifestyle through participation in sports activities, or workshops on wellness and personal development. To strengthen the language training in the curriculum, all undergraduate students are required to take a series of courses in English language and communication, which seek to help them acquire the necessary skills to gain the maximum benefit from their study, and prepare them for the needs of their future career.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS The University offers postgraduate programs leading to master’s and doctoral degrees and graduate diplomas. The Master of Art (MA), Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Science (MSc) are coursework degrees whereas the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) are research degree programs.

The University seeks to train its research postgraduates to develop sound research skills, to acquire the latest theoretical knowledge and become critical thinkers in their chosen fields of study, and to conduct enquires in their areas of specialization in a professional, expert and ethical manner.

The MPhil and PhD degrees involve the completion of coursework in addition to the preparation of research theses. The MPhil thesis reports work on a significant topic; the PhD dissertation entails original research that contributes to a specific field and expands the frontiers of knowledge. The coursework and thesis components provide research postgraduate students with both generalist knowledge of their subject discipline and mastery of their specialized research areas. Students are guided to organize, communicate and disseminate research results to both expert and lay audiences, in a coherent and professional manner.

On completion of their degrees, MPhil graduates will have attained advanced knowledge in their chosen fields of study, as well as training in research techniques for dealing with complex issues. They will also be prepared to pursue research degrees at the doctoral level.

PhD degree holders will leave the University with up-to-date expertise in their specialist areas, and superior understanding of research techniques for resolving scholarly and practical problems. They will also be prepared to embark on academic or professional careers, and to teach university-level courses in their areas of specialization.

THE ACADEMIC YEAR The academic year of the University begins on 1 September and ends on 31 August of the following year. It includes two semesters and two sessions. Normally, the Fall Semester commences in early September and the Spring Semester begins around early February. Each semester has fourteen weeks for scheduled classes. Immediately following the end of the 14th week there is a short study break followed by a week devoted to examinations. There is a one-week break in the Spring Semester around Easter. The Winter Session is scheduled between the two semesters for special academic programs, research symposia, and other activities. The Summer Session bridges the end of the Spring Semester and the beginning of the following Fall Semester. For most students, attendance for the Winter and Summer sessions is not required.

Important dates for the current academic year and provisional dates for the following academic year are presented at the end of this Calendar. 10 Admission of Students

To qualify for admission to the University, applicants must normally be at least 17 years of age by the first day of the Academic Year to which they are seeking admission, and should meet (i) the University Admission Requirements, (ii) the admission requirements of the program for which they are applying, and (iii) the English Language admission requirement.

UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION The University admission requirements and program admission requirements are minimum requirements for entry to the University. Admission to the University is selective and holding these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Applicants may be requested to attend personal interviews or take additional tests administered by the University.

University Admission Requirements Admission on the basis of HKCEE and HKALE results For entry to an undergraduate program for academic year 2010-11, ALL of the following requirements must be met: (a) Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) (i) Level 2 or above in English Language; (ii) Level 2 or above in Chinese Language (or Grade E or above in an alternative language); and (iii) Grade E or above in Mathematics plus at least 4 other subjects The above attainments must be obtained at the first and/or second attempt. At least 5 of these subject attainments must be obtained at a single sitting. Grade E or above is required if the English Language or Chinese Language subject was taken in 2006 or earlier. (b) Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE) (i) Passes in either: one Advanced Level (AL) subject, plus two Advanced Supplementary (AS) subjects; or two AL subjects; and (ii) Passes in AS Chinese Language and Culture and AS Use of English. For applicants who use an alternative language, rather than Chinese, to satisfy the language requirements in the HKCEE, an AL/AS subject may be used as a substitute for the Chinese Language and Culture requirement.

Admission of Students 11 Admission on the basis of qualifications other than HKCEE and HKALE results Applicants may seek admission to the University on the basis of qualifications other than HKCEE and HKALE results. Details are available at http://urao.ust.hk/.

These qualifications include:

(a) Graduation from secondary school with internationally recognized qualifications, including, but not limited to: the General Certificate of Education examinations at the Advanced level; SAT and Advanced Placement examinations; and the International Baccalaureate Diploma. The University has arrangements to admit students based on qualifications that require only twelve years of schooling, not the thirteen years typical of Hong Kong school leavers. On entry, these students will be required to complete at least 120 credits, rather than the normative 100 credits. (b) At least one year of successful, full-time study in a bachelor’s degree program at a tertiary institution recognized by the University.

(c) Successful completion of an associate degree, higher diploma or other like qualification from a tertiary institution recognized by the University.

Applicants with extraordinary achievements in international competitions such as the International Physics or Mathematics Olympiads may apply to the University direct. Their applications will be considered on the basis of individual merits. Upon admission, they may be required to complete at least 120 credits, rather than the normative 100 credits.

Mature applicants Applicants who are aged 25 years or older by the first day of the academic year to which they are seeking admission may be granted exemption from the University Admission Requirements provided that they are able to demonstrate aptitude and suitability for admission to their chosen program of study.

English Language Admission Requirements English is the medium of instruction at HKUST. Applicants must demonstrate their competency in the English language prior to admission by satisfying the University's English Language Admission Requirements through one of many ways. POSTGRADUATE ADMISSION Applicants seeking admission to master’s degree, graduate diploma or professional diploma programs should have obtained a bachelor’s degree from this University or a recognized institution, or obtained an approved equivalent qualification; and satisfied the school and department concerned as to their fitness to pursue postgraduate study.

To be eligible for admission to a PhD degree program, applicants should normally have obtained a master’s degree from this University or an approved institution, or presented evidence of satisfactory work at the postgraduate level on a full-time basis for at least one year, or on a part-time basis for at least two years; and satisfied the school and department concerned as to their chosen subject of research, as well as their fitness to undertake the research.

English Language Admission Requirements English is the medium of instruction at HKUST. 14 Fees, Scholarships and Financial Assistance This section deals with tuition and other fees, and financial assistance available to students.

FEES FOR 2010-11 ACADEMIC YEAR Except for caution money, fees described below are not refundable.

1. Tuition/program fees for undergraduate students Tuition/program fees are payable in two equal installments at the beginning of each semester. 6. Caution money: Each new student is required to pay a deposit of $300 as caution money on first registration. Charges will be made against this deposit if there are any unpaid claims against the student, such as outstanding library dues. The balance will be refunded if the student leaves the University before graduation. At graduation, the student is required to restore the balance of the caution money to its original level and the full amount of the caution money will be transferred toward the graduation fee.

7. Graduation fee: Upon completion of the program of study and before the degree or diploma is awarded, each student is required to pay a graduation fee of $300. The fee is normally settled by transferring the full amount of the caution money. 1

8. Students’ Union fee: Students joining the Students’ Union are required to pay an initial entry fee and thereafter an annual subscription. These fees are set by the Union and collected by the University on behalf of the Union. The entry fee, applicable to students admitted for the first time, is $100 and the annual subscription is $100.

Notes: (1) For the purpose of admission of non-local students, non-local students are defined by the University Grants Committee as persons entering Hong Kong for the purpose of education with a student visa/entry permit issued by the Director of Immigration. (2) For local students admitted in 2004-05 onwards to the Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management, the tuition for their 4th year of study is $60,000 per annum. 9. Late charges: Students may be required to pay late charges for failure to complete certain University procedures by stipulated deadlines. These include overdue library books. Late charges are levied in accordance with the rules and regulations set by the respective offices.

SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships and Awards The University offers well over a thousand of scholarships and awards funded by the University internal resources, government scholarship endowment, or donations from corporate donors and caring community leaders. Many types of scholarships, including recruitment scholarships, scholarships for continuing students, exchange scholarships, and non-academic achievement awards, are available for both local and Fees, Scholarships and Financial Assistance

non-local undergraduate or graduate students. Most scholarships are awarded to students on the strength of academic merit upon the recommendation of the department or school. Postgraduate Studentships The University awards postgraduate studentships (PGSs) to selected full-time research ostgraduates who consequently engage in ancillary teaching and/or research duties. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Government Student Financial Assistance Full-time students who have the right of abode in Hong Kong or have resided or have had their home in Hong Kong continuously for three complete years immediately prior to the commencement of their year of study are eligible to apply to the Government Student Financial Assistance Agency for financial aid. They must also take up exclusively UGC/publicly-funded programs at the University. Holders of student visas are not eligible, irrespective of their number of years of residence in Hong Kong.

Assistance is offered through two schemes: Tertiary Student Finance Scheme (TSFS): Under this scheme, means-tested awards are offered in the form of grants and/or loans. Grants are given for tuition fee and academic expenses while loans are for living expenses. The amount awarded is related to family income and financial status. Grants need not be repaid; loans are to be repaid at a relatively low interest rate of 2.5% per annum within a specified period after graduation or upon leaving the University.

Non-means Tested Loan Scheme (NLS): This scheme offers loans up to the amount of tuition fee to applicants who do not apply for assistance or who fail to receive assistance from the TSFS. It also allows students who receive assistance from the TSFS to obtain loans up to the difference between the maximum assistance and the amount they receive under the TSFS, subject to the NLS loan maximum (equivalent to the tuition fees payable) not being exceeded. Loans awarded are not means-tested. Students are expected to repay the loans at a cost recovery interest rate within a specified period after graduation or upon leaving the University.

Students may apply for assistance from both schemes or either one. Academic Regulations Academic regulations for students are published in this Academic Calendar. Detailed procedures for implementing and administering the academic regulations and programs are described separately in the Academic Programs Manual, which is available online at http://www.ust.hk/vpaao. All students must adhere to the regulations and be responsible for their individual conduct. A. TERMINOLOGY 1. Degree Program A degree program is an official program recognized by UGC (and JUPAS, as appropriate). A degree program constitutes a carefully constructed set of academic requirements, the successful completion of which is recognized by the award of a degree. The degree title appears on official diploma. Each program is given a unique program code, e.g. the Bachelor of Science program in Chemistry bears the code E440. Unless specified otherwise, the term “program” refers to a degree program wherever it appears in this Calendar.

2. Minor Program A minor program constitutes a distinct set of requirements that denotes a specific area or scope of study outside the general framework of the official degree
