Today's ceremony marks your transition from student to graduate and we are delighted to be able to now count you among the alumni rolls. The past many months have been full of challenges and joys. You've worked a great deal, balanced a great deal, learned a great deal and even laughed a bit along the way. Today you will graduate as a class. KH06 to be exact. Sixteen months ago you began this journey as 48 strangers and graduate today as classmates, team mates, colleagues and above all friend s. Chan To the KH06 EMBA Graduation Class, Congratulations to all of you on your successful completion of the Kellogg- HKUST EMBA program This is a unique class. Your learning took place during a unique period of time. We will all remember the fifth anniversary dinner and the world no. 9 ranking celebration with Hong Kong's Chief Executive at Government House in 2003. We will also remember the learning by webcast and teleconferencing during the difficult SARS period. Advanced technology created the infrastructure for classes to go on but it was determination that really saw us through the difficulties. I have no doubt that the experience you gained from your participation in this program and the knowledge that you acquired through learning from our professors and from each other will continue to be major assets in your future endeavors. If going to school on weekends after a busy work week was not enough we have also had the challenges of SARS last spring. But every cloud has a silver lining. In the face of such challenges we tested our means, our skills, our solidarity and yielded a beautiful testimony to the good qualities that we have as a group. This is not the only thing that we can be proud of. During the year we celebrated our world ranking and the first five years of successful partnership between the two schools that are behind this great program. For the continued support of the program may I pass on my appreciation to Dean Dipak Jain and Dean K. C. Chan. There are many colleagues I need to thank too, in particular Senior Associate Dean Korajczyk who worked closely with us during last Spring. We are also delighted to have President Chu and Marjorie Yang join LIS today as very special guests. It is such high level of support from the University and the business community that makes this program what it is today. After joining this program many of you often commented on how high we have set our standards. You have also reminded me of those high standards throughout. With your continued input and support we have become stronger as we maintain our position as the leading program in the region. It is with fond memories that I bid you congratulations. What you have achieved here will be with you forever. When you consider the time spent at HKUST and Kellogg know that you have earned the right to claim alumni homes at two distinguished business schools. We will rely on your active alumni participation and you can rely on our interest in your future. 5 6 Keynote Speaker Ms. Yang Mun Yak, Marjorie Marjorie Yang is Chairman and CEO of Esquel Group, a leading textile and apparel manufacturer with operations throughout the world. After growing up in Hong Kong, Ms. Yang went to MIT, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in pure mathematics. In 1976 she received an MBA from Harvard Business School. She returned to Hong Kong in 1978 and became a founding member of Esquel. She was named Chairman of the group in 1995. Ms. Yang currently sits on the boards of The Gillette Company, Swire Pacific Limited and The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, and is a member of the New York Stock Exchange International Advisory Committees. She is also a member of the MIT Corporation and the Court of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Since 2001, she has been highlighted on Fortune magazine's annual international li st of the top 50 most powerful women in business for her significant achievements in running a global operation employing 47,000 people. Ms. Yang is a Member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. She has an immense interest in conserving the country's environment and culture, especially in Xinjiang, western China. Ms. Yang is also concerned with the promotion of education, with a particular interest at this point in the development of young managers.
