FOREWORD We often say that the soul of a university is its faculty. If so, then in these faculty profiles, the University truly bares its soul.

In this publication, the reader will find the basic information needed to recognize the pedigree of our faculty members. The prestige of the universities that granted them their degrees tells you a great deal about their quality as students. The renown of the institutions where they worked before coming to HKUST indicates the class of university to which we belong.

The quality of the faculty represents ultimately the quality of this University, and I believe the reader of our faculty profiles will agree we are well on our way to becoming the university we aspire to be.

By listing each faculty member’s research interests and areas of expertise, the faculty profiles are also a valuable resource for those needing expert advice and assistance. We have tried to build a university that will serve the economic and social development of Hong Kong, and in these pages you will find experts in many areas relevant to those tasks.

When I was considering joining HKUST, the single most important factor attracting me to this new institution was the quality of the faculty already on board. Academics want to be members of a team they can be proud of, and I am no exception. It was, therefore, a wish come true for me to join a distinguished and talented company of academics engaged in the important task of creating this University.

I seldom write forewords but when I was asked by the editor to write one for the faculty profiles, I gladly accepted. It is yet another way for me to express my pride in being a member of the team described in these pages.
