Foreword 前言

The soul of the University will be its faculty I made that remark in a speech delivered at the inauguration of the University’s Council. That was ten years ago. Not a single faculty member was with us then-other than myself. In fact, HKUST itself was not yet in existence. Now we are a university at full size: 7,000 students and 500 faculty members. What are our faculty members like? My prediction ten years ago was this:

They will be men and women recognized for achievements in their chosen fields of endeavor, bold in their innovation, interactive with their colleagues in industry and commerce, and personable to their students but rigorous in their tutelage. Broadened by experience, deepened by the humanities, softened by the arts and intrigued by life’s other quality pursuits, they and their students will be heirs to people who heralded in the Twentieth Century’s technology and Information Age. They will be people you want for your colleagues, friends, and neighbors. They will be members of an international family to be attracted to our site of sweeping natural beauty. This, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, defines the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

By and large I think this statement could serve as a pretty good description of our present faculty. Of the very distinguished senior professors who came as founding members of the University, some have now retired after a period of extremely intense activity. Others are still here helping to provide vision while strengthening the foundations and planning our long-term strategies. The majority of our faculty, however, came when they were still young, soon after completing their doctorates or postdoctoral work. They have matured and blossomed. We are proud and happy that they are becoming local and national leaders in their specialties while staking out significant places for themselves in the international community of scholars. The future clearly belongs to them as they become the backbone and mainstay of the University. This volume focuses on their background and current research interests. In future editions, we will try to give you a more complete profile of their varied activities, so that you , the reader, can see for yourself that they are indeed the kind of people you would want as your colleagues, friends, and neighbors. Please turn the pages and meet the soul of HKUST.

前言 教授是大學的靈魂。 十年前，我在大學校董會成立典禮上致辭、說了以上這句話。 當時除了我，大學還未有教授到任；事實上。當時香港科技大學尚 未誕生。 時至今日，科大已經達到了政府預定的編制：七千位學生和四 百多位教授。我校的教授們有些什麼特色呢？十年前，我的預測是 這樣的： 他們在自己所選的學術領域中卓越有成，勇於創 新：與工商界的同事們保持聯繫；對學生來說‧既為 嚴師，亦為良友。通過經驗的累積、人文的薰陶、文 藝的冶煉、和追尋生命更高境界的情操，這所大學的 教授和他們的學生將會繼往開來，把先店區們開拓二十 世紀科技和資訊時代的成就發揚光大。池們將會是你 所期望的同事、朋友、和鄰居。他們將來自世界各 地，陶醉於這怡人的天然景色，成為這個國際化大家 庭的一分子。這一群傑出的女士和先生將會為香港科 技大學定位塑型。 相信以上這段話恰當地描述了我校現有的教研班子。早期來港 協助創辦這所大學的傑出資深教授裡。有一些在歷經非常艱鉅的工 作階段後，已經退休。其餘的創校教授們還留在大學服務，不斷為 鞏固大學的基礎和制定長遠的發展策略貢獻真知灼見。還有許多位 教授，在加盟科大時還很年青，不少剛取得博士學位或完成博士後 的研究工作。他們業已成熟，風華正茂：我非常高興見到他們既在 自己的專業領域中逐漸受到本地和國內的同行所推崇、又在國際性 的學術團體裡贏得了一定的地位。隨著他們成長為大學的骨幹和中 堅、科大的未來顯然穩操在他們手中。 這一冊《教授簡錄》集中介紹科大教授們的學術背景和目前的 研究領域。將來我們會添加更多有關資料，讓讀者親眼看到：他們 的確是大家所期望的同事、朋友、和鄰居。 請翻閱以下各頁，體會科大的精神。 校長吳家瑋教授 一九九八年九月
