Abstract

[evdate 2000-12-15] Faculty profiles 1999-2000 教授簡錄 FOREWORD I made that remark in a speech delivered at the inauguration of the University’s Council. That was eleven years ago. Not a single faculty member was with us then - other than myself. In fact, HKUST itself was not yet in existence.

Now we are a university at full size: 7,000 students and almost 500 faculty members. What are our faculty members like? My prediction eleven years ago was this:

They will be men and women recognized for achievements in their chosen fields of endeavor, bold in their innovation, interactive with their colleagues in industry and commerce, and personable to their students but rigorous in their tutelage. broadened by experience, deepened by the humanities, softened by the arts, and intrigued by life’s other quality pursuits, they and their students will be heirs to people who heralded in the Twentieth Century’s Technology and Information Age. They will be people you want for your colleagues, friends, and neighbors. They will be members of an international family to be attracted to our site of weeping natural beauty. This Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, defines the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

By and large I think this statement could serve as a pretty good description of our present faculty. Of the very distinguished senior professors who came as founding members of the University, some have now retired after a period of extremely intense activity. Others are still here helping to provide vision while strengthening the foundations and planning our long-term strategies. The majority of our faculty, however, came when they were still young, soon after completing their doctorates or postdoctoral work. They have matured and blossomed. We are proud and happy that they are becoming local and national leaders in their specialties while staking out significant places for themselves in the international community of scholars. The future clearly belongs to them as they become the backbone and mainstay of the University. Please turn the pages and meet the soul of HKUST. Chia-Wei WOO President March 2000 前言 教授是大學的靈魂。 十一年前，我在大學校董會成立典禮上致辭、說了以上這句 話。當時除了我，大學還未有教授到任；事實上，當時香港科技 大學尚未誕生。 時至今日；科大已經達到了政府預定的編制：七千位學生和 四百多位教授。我校的教授們有些什麼特色呢？十一年前，我的 預測是這樣的：

他們在自己所選的學術領域中卓越有成，勇於 創新；與工商界的同事們保持聯繫；對學生來 說，既為嚴師，亦為良友。通過經驗的累積、 人文的薰陶、文藝的冶鍊、和追尋生命更高境 界的情操，這所大學的教授和他們的學生將會 繼往開來，把先驅們開拓二十世紀科技和資訊 時代的成就發揚光大。他們將會是你所期望的 同事、朋友、和鄰居。他們將來自世界各地， 陶醉於這怡人的天然景色，成為這個國際化大 家庭的一分子。這一群傑出的女士和先生將會 為香港科技大學定位塑型。

相信以上這段話恰當地描述了我校現有的教研班子。早期來 港協助創辦這所大學的傑出資深教授裡，有一些在歷經非常艱鉅 的工作階段後，已經退休；其餘的創校教授們還留在大學服務， 不斷為鞏固大學的基礎和制定長遠的發展策略貢獻真知灼見。還 有許多位教授，在加盟科大時還很年青，不少剛取得博士學位或 完成博士後的研究工作。他們業已成熟，風華正茂；我非常高興 見到他們既在自己的專業領域中逐漸受到本地和國內的同行所推 崇 又在國際性的學術團體裡贏得了一定的地位。隨著他們成長 為大學的骨幹和中堅。科大的未來顯然穩操在他們的手中。 請翻閱以下各頁 體會科大的精神。 校長吳家瑋教授 二零零零年三月
