With these methods it is not easy to control the rate of drug release, or the dose received at a certain location, the ability to target the diseased tissues or organs is limited, and unwanted side effects in healthy tissues often occur. Thus, a controlled drug delivery system is highly desirable to increase the efficiency and selectivity of therapeutic efforts. Zeolites have a remarkable ability to grow, either as individual crystals or as films on a wide variety of supports, including metallic, ceramic and polymeric plates, metallic wires, organic and inorganic fibers and even some surfaces with especial characteristics, such as electronic circuits or medical prosthesis. In the same way, procedures are now in place to deploy mesoporous silica films either as a layer on top of different surfaces, or as pore and crack-filling material. In addition, the surface chemistry of both mesoporous silica and zeolite allows for chemical and biological functionalization. In our laboratory we attempt to create new delivery vehicles both static (e.g., medical devices such as zeolite-coated stents) and mobile (injectable nanoparticles). Nanoporous coatings on these vehicles serve the purpose of increasing biocompatibility and providing a sufficient drug loading capability, and can also be used to anchor targeting moieties. In addition, the porous structure can be employed to harbour monitoring elements (so that particle accumulation can be detected by MRI or luminescence), and agents for magnetic guidance and/or hyperthermia. This goal is to obtain multi-functional vectors, capable of self-guidance and with intelligent drug delivery capabilities.About the speaker: Jesus Santamaria is presently a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Zaragoza, in Spain, where he heads the Nanoporous Films and Particles research group, and is also the Vice-Director of the Nanoscience Institute of Aragon. His current research interests are mainly in the area of nanoporous materials and their applications, including microreactors, microstructured chemical sensors and systems for controlled drug delivery. His scientific production includes over 180 refereed publications, including 6 invited reviews, close to 300 presentations at scientific meetings and 13 patents. A frequently invited speaker at scientific conferences, (29 occasions as either Keynote or Plenary speaker), he has received different awards including the 3M Innovation award and the Honeywell-UOP Distinguished Lectureship. Prof. Santamaria is also the Editor of the Materials Synthesis and Processing section of the Chemical Engineering Journal and sits on the Editorial Board of several other Journals.

Through these Si nanotechnologies, it is expected that CMOS scaling and the improved performance trends will extend and continue well into the next decade. In addition, there has been good progress made and much interest generated in the research of non-silicon materials and their integration onto large silicon wafers to enhance integrated circuits performance, provide more functionalities and reduce power dissipation. For instance, III-V compound semiconductors and their integration onto silicon are currently in research for future high-speed and ultra-low-power digital CMOS applications. Integration of III-V on silicon can also potentially enable the integration of logic, communication and optical platforms all on the same silicon wafer for better energy-efficiency and higher performance. In addition, emerging nano-materials and nanotechnologies such as nanotubes, nanowires and nanoribbons, graphene, as well as new areas such as non-charge based devices and spintronics, are being explored for future computation and data storage applications. Furthermore, some of these nano-devices are finding potential applications in other important areas such as health and the environment, energy conversion and storage, consumer electronics, communication devices, sensors and so on. The research progress of these emerging nanotechnologies and nanoelectronic devices, and the challenges and opportunities of combining top-down and bottom-up nanoelectronics, will be discussed in this presentation.About the Speaker:Dr. Robert Chau is an Intel Senior Fellow, the company?s highest and most prestigious technical position, and the Director of Transistor Research and Nanotechnology at Intel Corporation. He is responsible for directing research and development in advanced transistors, process modules and technologies, and integrated circuit processes for microprocessor applications. He is also responsible for leading research efforts in emerging nanotechnologies for future nanoelectronics applications. Dr. Chau currently holds 135 issued United States patents, has received six Intel Achievement Awards and 13 Intel Logic Technology Development Division Recognition Awards, was recognized by IndustryWeek in 2003 as one of the 16
