| Notes: | Institute for Advanced Study Distinguished Speakers Series. Abstract: What with the three dimensions of space and the fourth dimension of time, our universe has four apparent dimensions. A goal of astronomy is to determine the large scale shape of the universe. This raises the following mathematical question: What are the possible large scale ‘shapes’ of four dimensional spaces? One can ask this same question for spaces of any dimension. As it turns out, the answer is more or less known for all dimensions except dimension 4. In dimension 4, we only know exactly how ignorant we are. I hope to explain why four dimensions is different than the others, and where the boundary of our knowledge/ignorance lies.
