This rapid success has been built on universal strengths and accomplishments, including: development of the smallest single-walled carbon nanotubes; uncovering the fifth gene linked to the causes of schizophrenia; pioneering research in neuroscience and anti-aging drug development; devising a fast motion estimation algorithm that forms part of the international MPEG-4 standard; and creating the world's number- six ranked Executive MBA*. In 2005-2020 the University will continue to set a new paradigm for scientific and technological development, and extend the boundaries of knowledge in business and China studies. Building on this foundation to achieve greater goals, the next 15 years will see the University: 1.Nano-science and nano-technology 2.Biological sciences and biotechnology 3.Electronics, wireless and information technology 4.Sustainable development: energy and environment 5.Management education and research To expand its impact on the Mainland, an independent graduate school is planned for South China that will become a leading regional source of research graduates. HKUST will also establish a new research and development facility in South China to contribute further to the economic development of Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta. The move emphasizes our commitment to step up a gear and integrate the full spectrum of relevant disciplines, including science, engineering and business, that will be so crucial in training the next generation of technologists and entrepreneurs. Adopting the new fouryear degree as a basis for evolution, undergraduate study will be re-engineered to: ‧Provide flexible, modular program structures that facilitate the pursuit of interdisciplinary curricula ‧Impart core human skills and values via a broad curriculum in tandem with specialist majors ‧Offer extensive and unique research opportunities, including credit-based research courses and access to our world-class research staff and facilities ‧Promote diversity and international exposure by expanding overseas exchange/internships, and rapidly increasing enrolment of non-local students ‧Encourage richer social and intellectual engagement via an enhanced campus environment 提供嶄新全面的本科生課程 The Undergraduate Experience Building 建設 A leading university requires the infrastructure and facilities that contribute to the execution of its mission. Capacity must also grow to support increased student numbers resulting from the conversion to the four-year degree and expanding non-local admissions. To these ends the HKUST campus, on its stunning coastal site, will be transformed.
