Professor of Mathematics Appointed for the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology today announces the appointment of Prof Chung-Chun YANG ( $$ & a Research Mathematician at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), as Professor of Mathematics.

A pioneer in the study of the factorisation theory of meromorphic functions, Prof Yang has worked in areas of value-distribution theory of meromorphic functions and their applications, pattern recognition and image processing, as well as data compression techniques for large pictorial database management. He has published over 100 journal articles and book chapters, authored and edited sixteen monographs including two volumes introducing Chinese mathematicians' works, and has served as a reviewer for several journals. Three of his books were published by American Mathematical Society (AMS) in its Contemporary Mathematics Series. He has been an invited speaker at several international conferences and has given lectures in various scientific and mathematical meetings. A member of the AMS Committee on Translation from Chinese, Prof Yang has served as an Organiser for two of AMS special sessions.

Prof Yang earned his BS in Mathematics from the National Taiwan University and his MS and PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He spent a year teaching and conducting Postdoctoral Research at Michigan State University before joining NRL in 1970. He received NRL Annual Research Publication Award in 1972 and the Special Achievement Award in 1987. During 1983 to 1984 he was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
