Centre of Computing Services and Telecommunications Dr. William Max Ivey This year HKUST celebrates its fifth year anniversary. The University has been in

operation at its beautiful Clear Water Bay campus for five years, although many of us in CCST had already been at work designing and developing the University network and computer systems for several years prior to that. Looking back over this period, I believe that all of us, students, faculty and staff can take pride in the

great things that we have accomplished. Here in CCST we take special pride in the fact that we have developed one of the most modern computing environments in the world during a period of extremely rapid growth. One look at our growth of network computer nodes tells the story: Growth from about 500 nodes in 1989 (prior to campus move-in) to over 6,000 nodes in 1996. 3 CHANNEL In addition to simply increasing the size of our network, we have also been a rapid adopter of new network technology as it

becomes available. Some of our milestones include the following: l One of the first site in Asia, or indeed the world, to employ FDDI. (1990) l One of the first three sites in the world to employ a multiple ring switched FDDI environment. (1992)

l First site in Hong Kong and one of the first in Asia to adopt a structured wiring topology.

l Aggressive movement to a single user per UTPS segment. (All campus nodes connected this way by Summer 1997.)

l Aggressive movement to an all switched (versus shared) network topology. (We expect to be the first large network in

the world to move entirely to this topology.) In addition to development in the network, other significant milestones have been accomplished. To name a few:

Installation of the largest supercomputer in Asia outside of Japan. HKUST, is still the largest, despite what some of you may have read At a rating of 10.5 GFLOPS, the Intel Paragon at to the contrary in the newspaper. Development of a highly distributed client/server environment patterned after leading universities in the USA.

Installation of the latest state-of-the-art computing equipment in laboratories for student use. Computer barns operated

by CCST have been upgraded twice, with newer equipment, since opening. Development of a modern university administrative software system using the latest approaches in relational DBMS

and CASE. Intel Paragon Supercomputer

4 - CHANNEL I would like to take a special opportunity to welcome our new students and staff to the campus for this our fifth anniversary. I hope

new students, and old ones as well, will take a careful look at the new operating environment which CCST staff have developed for

the computer barns. We have been working hard for over six months to develop this environment. We believe it addresses many

of the suggestions and complaints which we have received, and considered, from our student users over the past year. In addition

we are making a special effort at the beginning of this term to meet and introduce all new students and staff to the HKUST

computing environment and CCST. These informative "educational" opportunities are described in more detail elsewhere in this

CHANNEL Computer Barns '96 Enhancements Made over Summer

Goodbye to boot diskettes - The PCs will now bootup from boot-ROM instead of floppy diskettes. Since the

boot image will be reloaded from server during each reboot, the risk of virus infection will be greatly reduced.

Faster bootup time - The new bootup mechanism takes about 40 seconds to boot up the DOS62/WIN31

environment, whereas boot diskettes took more than 2 minutes. WIN95 available on all Barns' PCs - During bootup, a boot menu will be displayed on the screen and you can

select the preferred working environment (DOS62/WIN31 ,or WlN95). New applications available - PC Pine, some hot HTML tools (HotMetal, MapEdit) and some writing assistant

software. Enjoy multimedia features - Sound cards have been installed on all PCs. Please bring along your own earphones

to have sound capability. Limited headphones and earphones will be made available in all Barns, in case you

have forgotten to bring your own. NO more long waits to just take a peep at new e-mails - With the newly installed Express Terminals, you can

do a quick check on e-mails or to print out a document. The access to these terminals are limited to 15 minutes

only. More powerful network servers added to each Barn - With a number of newly installed Pentium-Pro servers,

we have increased the server-to-client ratio. This improves the PC server access performance.

h, where has the printer switch box knob gone - This is a common question asked by the Barn users.

Without the knob, they would not be able to direct their printouts to the local printers. Good news! Auto printer

switch boxes have been purchased to replace all the Barns' existing manual switch boxes. Local print jobs will be

detected by the switch automatically and directed to the printer. Users will no longer need to set the switch

manually. Need Help in Barn? Barn Helpdesks - Student Consultants are available in scheduled time slots in the three

Barns. Please check out the opening hours posted on notice boards. These Student Consultants will be able to

assist you with the general computing usage problems and print queue problems. Regular checks on equipment - Equipment in all Barns will be checked three times daily by the Maintenance

Helpers. This will help to identify the faulty equipment as early as possible and to replace or repair them immediately

where possible. Your suggestions/complaints/feedbacks are most valuable to us - A Suggestion Box has been added in each

Barn and you can simply drop us a written note into these suggestion boxes or send an e-mail to the account

CCLISTEN.

6 CHANNEL More Enhancements Coming Soon l Durable keyboards - The failure rate for keyboards in the Barns has been astonishing, especially in the Barn

B (1 /F). Thus, "tough" IBM keyboards have been purchased and will be used to replace all the keyboards in the

three Barns. l More laser printers - Twenty more units of laser printers will be distributed and installed in the three Barns

upon delivery. For any failure of a printer, the system will cleverly direct your printouts to another backup

printer. We hope this will greatly shorten the printing time and improve the printing service.

l Increase availability of PCs in Barn C teaching area - Currently, we are experimenting to add 20 more PC

basic units which will share a common 17" monitor with the existing 20 units of workstations. With this setup,

users can select from a monitor switch box to display the screen of either a PC or a workstation.

l NO seat reservations by personal belongings - who wants to leave the PC temporarily, will need A PC screen lock program will be implemented where a user, to activate before leaving. The program will then time and automatically reboot the PC after 15 minutes, freeing up the PC for another user. Should any seat found vacant

and the screen lock program has not been activated, the PC will be rebooted by the Student Consultants.

8 CHANNEL HKUST Dial-up Services Update Introduction Since 1990, the dial-up service in HKUST has evolved significantly. Starting with just a few 24OObps modem lines, text-based

applications such as e-mail, we now have 288 28.8Kbps modem lines, supporting more than 9000 students and staff in the

University, running mostly windows-based applications such as web browsing. Current Modem Pool Capacity and Support / Modem Pool Access Number Number of lines Session Time limit Student Regular Pool 23353500 168 1 Hour Student Express Pool 23584937 60 15 Minutes stuff Pool 23584000 60 2 Hours , Sharing of Modem Pool To allow more people to be able to use the dial-up service, several usage policies have been implemented, namely:

(1) Session Time Limit In a shared resource like a dial-up pool, a fully occupied pool indicates that someone is waiting. Hence we have imposed a time

limit in each pool, such that when a pool becomes fully occupied, user with connection time exceeded the limit will be disconnected.

Users waiting, including the just disconnected one, will be able to compete for the disconnected line.

When a pool is not full, no session time limit will be imposed, and the user can use as many hours as one has to.

(2) Idle Sessions Cut-off When there is no activity in the dial-up line for the last 15 consecutive minutes, it is likely that some other users may put this idled

line into better use. When the dial-up pool is full, I ine as such will be disconnected, and an e-mail will be sent to the user stating the

disconnection time and reason. Again, this will only happen when a dial-up pool becomes fully occupied. When it is not so, no

action will be taken on the line. (3) Multiple Dial-up Connections We believe that it is very rare for a user to require two or more dial-up lines to perform what one wants to, especially with the

introduction of PPP When an account has occupied two or more physical dial-up lines, the line occupied earlier will be disconnected

immediately. An e-mail will be sent to the user stating the disconnection time and reason.

Proxy Server - An Answer to Faster Web Browsing When you try to browse a web, it is likely that someone else in the campus has accessed the very same page before. We have set

up a server, called a proxy server, to store recent web pages that have been accessed by users in the campus. Using this server, you

can get much faster response when you access these pages, especially for web pages outside Hong Kong. To make use of it, please

10 CHANNEL Window 95 at HKUST Computer Barns Those of you who have visited Computer Barns recently (since September) may have realized the various enhancements that CCST

has made to further improve the computing facilities of the barns. The Windows 95 support, booting PC without boot diskettes,

shortened booting time, better virus control, more efficient network printing, and upgraded software applications, etc., are being

some of the major improvements. The Windows 95 system is a more advanced and powerful operating system that many users have been awaiting. However, unlike

UNIX and Windows NT systems which are able to govern user access on system resources (such as hard disk data) in terms of user

access rights, Windows 95 is rather weak in protecting the system itself from being destroyed by user. This had been the biggest

technical problem for us in planning to set up and maintain Windows 95 in the open area like Computer Barns. After months of

efforts spent on the tailoring and implementation of the Windows 95 setup, CCST is pleased to announce the availability of

Windows 95 in all barns! Shortly after powering up a barn PC, the following boot menu will be displayed automatically.

11 CHANNEL To use Windows 95 or Windows 3.1, you only need to select the corresponding menu option from the boot menu. Currently, the

barns' Windows 95 setup includes Microsoft Office 95, Microsoft Bookshelf, Internet tools, PC-Pine, virus scanning agent, audio

interface (using headphones), and most of the existing Windows 3.1 applications.

The OS 6.2 and Windows 3.1" environment is retained in order to guarantee the availability of applications that are only

available on the old platform. Departmental Computing laboratories CCST is working with various academic departments to upgrade the departmental laboratories to Windows 95 as well. Please

watch out for the relevant announcement from your own department. Student Halls Students having installed Windows 95 in their own PCs can connect to our campus network without much difficulties. Detailed

technical information on how to handle Windows 95 network settings can be found in the CCST web pages. No matter you are

running Windows 95, Windows NT, or Linux, please make sure you have a legal software license.

Staff Offices Currently, there are more than 150 staff PCs running Windows 95 that are supported by CCST, and we expect there will be a

steady growth. Any staff user who wants to install Windows 95 on his/her PC at office or quarter may send request to CCHELP,

then he/she will receive instructions as well as assistance (if necessary) on the installation of Windows 95.

12 CHANNEL Moving to Open E-mail Systems As there are booming number of computers connecting to Internet, more and more people demand various forms of electronic

communication, where electronic mail is one of which and could be the most popular service being used in the Internet world.

Among the different approaches or protocols that e-mail applications use to access to e-mail messages on the servers, there are

POP (Post Office Protocol) and IMAP (Internet Mail Accessing Protocol). In short, e-mail programs which use POP, like Eudora and

Netscape Mail, will allow you to access new e-mail messages from server and you can then store them in your local hard disk.

IMAP is designed to have the extra capabilities to store and manipulate the e-mail messages in multiple folders in remote servers.

Since the messages are stored in servers, you can always read your old and new mails from any other computers.

We have installed various mail servers for undergraduates, postgraduates and staff for e-mail access. The names and purposes of

our available e-mail access servers are shown below: I Name Purpose Staff imap.ust.hk IMAP server for staff and postgraduates to store mail messages in a dedicated high-performance e-mail folders pop.ust.hk POP server for staff and postgraduates Student imap.stu.ust.hk IMAP server for undergraduates to store mail messages in a dedicated

high-performance e-mail folders pop.stv.ust.hk POP server for undergraduates In particular, the map.ust.hk" should be new to most users. It provides a much better performance e-mail storage to all staff and

postgraduates and has virtually no disk quota limit. This e-mail storage is different from the UNIX home directory and is accessible

only through the IMAP protocol. This e-mail storage will be continually upgraded to cope with our increasing demands on e-mail.

Users using POP-compatible e-mail programs, like Eudora and Netscape Mail, can configure your software with the above POP

servers. Users using IMAP-compatible e-mail programs can easily use the IMAP servers above. Recommended IMAP e-mail programs

include Pine developed by the University of Washington, supporting UNIX, Windows 3.1 as well as Windows 95 users, and Mail

Drop developed by the Baylor University for use on the MAC platform, as detailed in the followings.

13 CHANNEL What is Pine? Pine is a tool for reading, sending, and managing electronic messages. It is designed specifically with

novice computer users in mind, but can be tailored to accommodate the needs of power users as well.

The guiding principles for Pine user-interface are: careful limitation of features, one-character mnemonic

commands, and always-present command menus. It is intended that Pine can be learned by exploration

rather than reading manuals. It has the ability to perform full screen editing of messages, include and

extract attachments (such as Word or Excel files), and other advanced message system features.

Pine uses IMAP for accessing message folders on remote computers and MIME for sending multimedia or

other binary files as attachments to normal messages. Pine is now available in all UNIX systems. PC-Pine is also available in aII computer barns and will be

available in the staff network very soon. What is Mail Drop? Mail Drop is an IMAP e-mail client for the Macintosh under development at Baylor University and is distributed

s is" for free. It is a handy tool for reading, sending, and managing e-mail messages, and it uses MIME/

MacMlME attachment encoding (AppleDouble, AppIeSingIe, BinHex, rue" MIME) for sending binary files

as attachments to normal messages. On-line help on Mail Drop is readily available through Mail Drop Guide and Mail Drop Help. The Mail

Drop Guide provides on-line guide on using Mail Drop by topics area (which shows general categories),

index entry (which lists keywords), or words to look for (which lets you search for help according to keywords

you type). The Mail Drop Help uses WWW browser to connect to the Mail Drop home page for referring

Be Aware of Macro Viruses! What are Macro Viruses? Macro viruses are new types of viruses that use an application own macro programming feature to distribute themselves. Unlike

other viruses, macro viruses do not infect programs; they infect documents. What is Concept Virus? Recently, CCST h as received reports of viruses found in Word documents. The most common one that has been identified is a Word

macro virus called Concept. The Concept virus, once it installs itself, let you save documents only as Word templates instead of normal Word documents. This

virus does not cause data loss or any other damage, but it will replicate and distribute itself through Word documents, e.g. when

user opens an infected document which is received as a file attachment with electronic mail.

Although the Concept virus is not as harmful as other destructive viruses (for example, the boot sector virus can cause a machine fails to boot), there are some other macro viruses that may cause more severe damage.

How to Handle Macro Viruses? (1) How to detect macro viruses? (PC platform) F-PROT, the adopted PC virus scanning tool in HKUST PC Environment, is capable of detecting macro viruses such as the Concept.

After PC starts up, users can invoke F-PROT to scan system memory and hard disk for virus by using the option heck/Clean

Virus" under "Others.. ." sub-menu, or by the command -PROT C:" at DOS prompt. (2) How to disinfect macro viruses? (PC platform) F-MACRO is a DOS program which searches Word 6.x and 7.x document files for known Word macro viruses and disinfects them

by disabling and overwriting the viral macros. For example: F-MACRO C: /BACKUP /DISINF will make a backup copy (with extension .BAK) before disinfecting infected documents (with extension .DOC) at C drive. It is

recommended to run F-MACRO with the /BACKUP option while you may delete the backup copy if you have no problem working

with the disinfected Word document. (3) How to prevent macro viruses? (PC and MAC platforms) It is recommended to install Microsoft Word Macro Virus Protection Tool. The protection fool can be obtained from CCST web

Upon being alerted, users are given the choice of opening the file without executing the macros, opening the file as is, or canceling the file open operation. Opening the file without macros ensures that macro viruses are not transmitted and do not affect the content of the document. Unless users are sure that the macros contained in the document are clean, it is recommended to open the file without macros. The protection tool also offers an option to scan for Concept virus. If any infected Word documents are found, the Concept virus will be removed and the documents will be re-saved as normal Word documents. Note: The protection tool has already been installed with the Microsoft Word on PCs and MACs of computer barns. General Precaution against Computer Virus Attack l Scan your hard disk regularly with anti-virus utility such as F-PROT (for PC). l Always check new programs and files for possible hidden virus. l Avoid referring programs and files of uncertain origin; in case you need to do so, check for possible viruses first. l Never boot your computer from unknown diskettes. l Backup personal programs and files regularly.
