of the most important economics journals Top in Hong Kong and among world"s top five from 1996 to 2000, with Harvard and Stanford, for

number of publications appearing in three of the most prestigious China studies journals

'We take pride in our research, which pushes the frontiers of biochemistry and spans the spectrum of both the basic and the applied.' Prof Nancy Y Ip Associate Dean of Science Professor and Head of Biochemistry Director, Biotechnology Research Institute 14 It is 'no go' without your 'bunny suit' at the Microelectronics Fabrication Facility - the first laboratory of its kind in Hong Kong. Producing silicon chips requires the atmosphere to be cleaner than clean. Special air, water, vacuum, and chemical systems ensure that the five fabrication modules are kept in pristine condition.

At the multimillion-dollar Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility, researchers are able to simulate earthquake motions with a special bi-axial shaking table - a world first. Rain-induced land-slides, tunneling, deep excavation, and settlement of reclaimed land are among the many other geotechnical research areas to benefit from the Facility.

Central Research FACILITIES The arrival of HKUST has increased Hong Kong"s capacity for research enormously. Much of the equipment is unique in the region. Previously, businesses and researchers would have had to go overseas; now they can make Hong Kong the home of world-class discoveries. Here are a few examples.

CENTRAL RESEARCH 'Applied research is the critical mid-stream development path that drives fundamental research towards commercialization. This R&D process requires enormous effort. 15 The Materials Characterization and Preparation Facility is used extensively by science and engineering researchers. Helping them on their way to new knowledge are a field emission scanning electron microscope; a high-resolution transmission electron microscope; an atomic force microscope; imaging SIMS systems for surface and depth profiling analysis; and Asia's first single-crystal X-ray diffractometer.

Advanced Engineering Materials Facility CLP Power Wind/Wave Tunnel Facility Design and Manufacturing Services Facility Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility Materials Characterization and Preparation Facility Microelectronics Fabrication Facility Central Research Facilities The CLP Power Wind/Wave Tunnel Facility - the only one in the region - allows front-line research into wind and wave engineering, and pollution dispersion problems. The facility is available to Hong Kong and the region's construction and engineering industries, and to environmental researchers. 'With excellent teaching and advanced facilities, HKUST has trained a new cyber-generation with cutting-edge skills for the Hong Kong work force.' Amy Y T Wong, Founding Chairperson of the HKUST Alumni Association 16 APPLIED RESEARCH Ivory towers are out. At HKUST, we put new knowledge to work for the benefit of society. Applied research, technology transfer, and executive education enable the University to connect directly with the outside world. The originality and commercial potential of R&D at HKUST have brought swift international recognition through patents. More than 45 have been awarded for the University"s inventions in just 11 short years, and over 70 are pending. Throughout its 11-year history, HKUST has brought new insights and solutions to business, industry, and the community. HKUST created the world"s most advanced wind shear warning system for the new Hong Kong International Airport together with US scientists. HKUST developed a fast motion estimation algorithm that has been recognized as part of MPEG-4, the international standard for multimedia applications. HKUST developed a genechip technology for the identification, quality assurance, and standardization of traditional Chinese medicine. HKUST has invented an environmentally friendly method to turn scrap tires into a material ideal for use in highway construction and other civil engineering projects. 'HKUST has rapidly developed an extensive patent portfolio and is actively transferring its technologies to industry via training, licensing, collaborative research and joint ventures.' 18 THE GLOBAL PICTURE Outward bound takes on fresh meaning at HKUST. Increasing community ties find all four Schools active in society at large. Science and language camps and credit-bearing online courses for secondary-school students, teacher training programs, faculty participation in over 300 advisory bodies, online lifelong learning programs and public forums are just some of the activities that bring HKUST and the local community together.

Academic alliances with mainland universities and collaborative work with municipal governments are setting the pace for future cooperative efforts at the national level.

Internationally, connections with leading institutions are actively pursued through the University"s Europe Institute, and membership of the Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU) and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU).
